Pudding wanted to carry the special little bag of seed they gave us at Wild Birds Unlimited to feed the birds on Christmas Day.

This is what it says on the bag:

"To our friends...The people of Scandinavia traditionally feed the birds on Christmas Day to ensure good luck throughout the coming year. Spread this seed on your doorstep Christmas Morning for New Year's good luck!"

We feed our backyard birds year round, but we will put this seed out on Christmas anyway since it seems like a fun tradition!

West window by Douglas Strachan, part of the full scheme of windows commissioned for the chapel in1921.

Westminster College stands to the north of Cambridge's centre and is primarily a theological college for the training of ministers in the United Reformed Church. The present buildings were designed by Henry Hare and built between 1897–1899.

The reason for my visit was the chapel which is hidden away behind the main frontage. This low vaulted space is remarkable for its glass, a complete scheme of windows by Scottish stained glass artist Douglas Strachan, a symphony of swirling forms and rich colours emanating from all of the thirteen windows. The apse and west windows are relatively small, but the windows on each side of the chapel are larger and more dramatic works illustrating Old and New Testament themes respectively..

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_Strachan

This college is off the tourist trail and thus not so widely known or visited, but knowing of the glorious glass I enquired about seeing the chapel at reception and the nice lady there happily let me in and pointed me in the right direction which was very much appreciated, and the chapel's windows really are hidden gems.

I generally like to depict the more pleasant aspects of life, but last Wednesday the area between Padua and Venice was struck by an EF4 tornado. Towards 5 PM a strong wind blew up in Padua where I live, to the north the sky was dark grey, the rest of the sky was white, we knew something serious was happening not that far away. Today I drove through the disaster area between Dolo and Mira on the SS11 road to Venice and it was like a war zone, the damage being more akin to that inflicted by an artillery bombardment than by an earthquake: private houses, businesses, farms and historic monuments have been seriously damaged and even razed to the ground.

One person lost his life and 72 were wounded, the tornado lasted only a few minutes but look at the results.

The locals, who are well known for being extremely hard-working, are already back to work to repair the damage, with the help of volunteers, the Civil Defence, the Fire Service and the Police and Carabinieri. The disaster area is being guarded by the law enforcement agencies to avoid looting, and some arrests have already been made.

The area between the Euganean and Berici hills and the Venetian lagoon can be subject to extreme weather events, but tornadoes of such a force are relatively rare, in 1970 one struck Venice sinking a water bus with many victims.

American Speedfest 8 Returned to Brands Hatch for another Fantastic American themed weekend Featuring the likes of Euro Nascar Legends and even Angelo American Formula 5000's Racing this weekender event was shaping up to be a good one.

The First Day was mostly focused on Qualifying with many of the Races taking Place on the Sunday. Each of the Teams was both busy in the outer Paddock and the Pitlane getting their cars ready for a shakedown session in which they would have to Qualify to see who could be the Fastest and take Pole Position for each of the Races come Sunday.

Angelo American Formula 5000

The Formula 5000's made a Thunderous return to the Brands Hatch circuit, Built during a time where many Formula 1 cars from the likes of Lotus Williams and McLaren we using Ground Effect and pushing up the speeds of their cars.

Formula 5000's took speeds to a whole new level by using V8 Engines to power their cars which were found to be even faster than those Formula 1 cars of that era on the straights of different race tracks. Chevron B37's and McRae GM1'S were amongst the field and Qualifying looked to be very close indeed.

In First Place taking Pole Position and The Fastest Lap was (Neil Glover) in his Chevron B37 with a Lap Time of 47.039 with an average speed of 92.44mph. An Insanely Fast Lap Time for Brands Hatches Indy Circuit.

In Second Place was (Mark Campfield) in his Chevron B24 with A Lap Time Of 47.694 and an Average Speed of 91.17mph still Impressively quick for Chevron Power.

In Third Place was (Greg Thornton) in his Chevron B24 with A Lap Time Of 47.775 with an Average Speed of 91.02mph showing the power of the Chevron Engine through every turn.

A Tightly Packed Grid for Sundays Race and it looks like its a Chevron Front Row lockout but who's car will have the power to Triumph over the others? only time will tell.

Subject: Fashion

It's Friday and I need to get something posted. I told Claire (my better half) the subject and she laughed. She doesn't think I am very fashionable or is it that I have no fashion sense whatsoever. Mmmm

So I came up with 3 images:

* One Jeans low showing off my CK briefs - I kid you not

* An array of stripey shirts on the rail - everything seems to be stripes this year, at least where I shop

* Sunglasses

I have always liked buying sunglasses, mainly Ray Ban and Oakley.

So here are my Oakley sunglasses, in the sunshine!! I thought it was a little dull so used a 8-star filter. Oh, well

This image is part of my set for Project 52 - 2013 Ellenburg Photograph's Photo Challenge

TO VIEW sit back from your monitor 2 feet and place your index finger about 10 inches in front of your eyes and focus on your finger. This will cause your eyes to go comfortably cross eyed. Keep that same cross eyed focus and notice there are now 3 photos in the back ground. Do not let your eyes leave the cross eye as you look at the middle picture which has appeared. Now increase or decrease how much your eyes are cross eyed until the image pops into 3D. Your eyes will want to leave the cross eye, but fight that urge. This is an acquired skill and takes practice. Stop if it's uncomfortable.

Day 282/365

October 9

I meant to participate in FGR's Balloon group...but I didn't see the balloons outside the place I was hoping to go and use!

Here I am before going to meet Andrew and his mom for dinner at Pizzeria Bianco.

pizzeriabianco.com/

Oh. My. God. I love the food there! I think my favorite thing is the appetizer-- Speidini. Absolutely delicious!

We ordered three pizzas. I was surprised that my favorite was the Biancoverde-with arugula and ricotta. So yummy!!

To be honest I find the highly eclectic style refreshing. :)

Emergency Protest Brighton: Defend Democracy / Resist The Parliament Shutdown, Brighton, 31.08.2019

Can you identify this Team ?

This photograph is one of a series taken by Julian Mason on Saturday 18th July 2009 at Goodwood Motor Racing Circuit in West Sussex (UK) prior to the start of "The Mongol Rally 2009" ... a tough rally driving event requiring Teams to make it all the way (about 10,000 miles) to Ulaanbaatar (the capital city of Mongolia) ... usually in small second-hand cars. The harder it is ... the more hazards that are overcome ... then the more successful your rally is considered to be. Making it all the way from the UK to Ulaanbaatar / Mongolia is a huge achievement.

300 Students and workers march through Birmingham City Centre and 60 occupy the council chambers at Birmingham City Council for over 4 hours. Remaining protesters maintained a public protest outside the building to ensure the action was visible to a busy market square. Protests remained peaceful throughout the day.

The action in Birmingham today took place against a back from of what was the 3rd national day of action by students. It was a day of revolt—across Britain, from Dundee to Bournemouth, young people rose up against the attacks on education. The protest named X2 following day X on the 24th November and the 50, 000 NUS/UCU protest on the 10th of November.

These protests are a revolt against £9,000 university fees, the closing off of universities to all but the rich, and the abolition of the EMA allowance that 16-18 year olds rely on to go to college. But it was also about the way the Tories are ripping up people’s futures.

From the beginning of the occupations messages of solidarity flooded in from trade union representatives all over the city representing some of the most vulnerable members of the public and public sector workers under attack from the cuts including UNISON, PCS and UCU unions.

These included support workers, council workers and civil servants, support staff, teachers and lecturers in education, Connexions youth workers faced with job cuts and cuts to the services for the most vulnerable young people in Birmingham. Refugees and migrant workers will see a massive cut in legal aid, what little there is between what can mean life and death for those that are already exploited and degraded in the most appalling ways.

A statement from PCS Union representing over 300,000 civil servants said “Student protests against the attacks on education are inspirational to the rest of us. This is part of a concerted attack by this government to take away people’s rights to education, work, welfare, healthcare, housing and more. The question ultimately is: who pays for the crisis? It is clear that students should not pay for it, and it’s clear the public sector workers shouldn’t either. We should be unified in demanding that those who cause the crisis should pay for it. Keep up the fight, we can win.”

The student action was providing them inspiration and hope that there is an alternative to the CON-DEM cuts which would wreck the lives of millions.

Day X2 and day X has showed that the angry march and the occupation of Tory headquarters on 10 November was not a one-off event and there were as many if not more people involved each time.

Tens of thousands of students, especially school students, took to the streets. These school students know universities are being closed off to them by soaring fees. They know the cuts mean that only a few will get more than low-paid jobs.

The entranceway to the YHA Haworth (the Haworth Youth Hostel) in Cross Roads with Lees, January 2020. It shows the impressive porte-cochère, where carriages could draw up to the main entrance and passengers disembark without getting wet.

The Haworth Youth Hostel was officially opened on the 8th May 1976 by Councillor J. S. Bell, Chairman of West Yorkshire County Council. It is located on Longlands Drive, off Lees Lane in Cross Roads with Lees, just outside Haworth. The Hostel occupies Longlands Hall, former home of industrialist Edwin Robinson Merrall whose family owned Lees Mill and Ebor Mills in the Worth Valley which the house overlooked. Edwin was the second son of Michael Merrall. It was the last of four houses owned by the Merrall family. The house was designed by Keighley architect J. B. Bailey and was built between 1882 and 1884. The architectural style is Northern Manor House, a mixture of classical and exaggerated Jacobean styles.

It was occupied by the Merralls with their seven children up until the start of the First World War. Following the death of Edwin and his son Philip, it was sold by Mary Merrall on the 16th July 2019. The sale included 25 acres of grounds, a lodge, and a yard well away from the house with washing shed, carriage shed, coach house, harness room, a Dutch barn, the groom's cottage and a petrol store.

The property was bought by a Mr Inglis for personal use in the early 1920s, and then sold to a Mr Paley in 1939, who had plans to turn the house into a hotel. After the war it was sold to textile producers the Heald Brothers for use as a hostel for Italian immigrant mill girls. In the 1960s, housing was built on the surrounding land and the house fell into disrepair. It was sold as a retirement home around this period before the Youth Hostel Association purchased the hall for £23,500 in 1974.

The house had been brought to the attention of the YHA by local policeman Jens Hislop and the house was vested in the YHA on the 18th October 1974. It was bought and developed through a combination of grants from The Countryside Commission, West Yorkshire County Council, and the Department of Education and Science. Although it officially opened in May 1976, the hostel was active from earlier, possibly even late 1975. The first wardens were John and Sue Page and there were 90 beds. Many of the ground floor rooms, including the ballroom and lounge, were converted to staff quarters. Extensive modernisation began in 1994, including adapting some of the ground floor staff rooms into dormitory and guest rooms, and sub-dividing some of the large upstairs dormitories into smaller dormitories. Further redevelopments and improvements followed in 2009 and 2012. In 2020 the hostel boasts 89 beds across two single rooms, two double rooms, one three bedded room, three four bedded rooms, six six bedded rooms, one seven bedded room and three eight bedded rooms.

Photograph taken by History Society member Tim Neal on 26th January 2020, when the current manager invited local residences to visit and look around the Hall. Permission was given to take and publish photographs during the visit. Additional information from the YHA's Profile Sheet compiled by YHA volunteer archivist John Martin in January 2018.

Mark and I have agreed that its time to end our partnership. We will remain good friends.

Beijingers are not known for their ability to queue – especially when they try to exit or enter a congested freeway. It is not uncommon to patiently wait in line only to have a car (several tens of cars) come up the shoulder and try to butt in.

These obnoxious people think that because they're driving a black Audi A6, other drivers should let them in. After all, they are important people in a hurry. Or they think that because they're driving some shitbox 金北 (Jīn Běi - a brand of full-sized van) or 面包车 (miàn bāo chē - a tall, narrow "breadbox" van), other drivers should let them in, because they are reckless people who have nothing to lose.

Most drivers in the proper lane defend their rights by riding a centimeter or two off the bumper of the car ahead, and they move to cut off the shoulder lane to lock-out the illegal driver. Of course, this rarely works, for the offender sees the centimeter gap as an invitation. Neither player in this game of "chicken" is willing to back off. The result, all traffic slows to a crawl until someone gives way.

Game Theory explains why Beijing traffic is congested. Driving on the shoulder is illegal, but it goes unpunished (unless one is stupid enough to drive past the well-marked traffic cameras). In any given duel, the law-abiding driver has a 50% chance of winning. Meanwhile, the law-abiding driver gets one turn to play before the game is over; the offending driver keeps taking turns until he wins. The net score: the miscreant driver always saves time compared to law-abiding drivers.

Game Theory states that because illegal driving manoeuvers are rewarded, and because two vehicles cannot drive side-by-side on a lane built for one, the traffic must slow to a crawl everywhere.

But I've recently found an effective way change the game. I know how to stop these traffic-disrupting jerks in their tracks.

When a driver sidles up to me looking to butt in, I ride the bumper of the car ahead and close in on the shoulder, as before, but I also lower the passenger power-window, reach for my camera, and take the offender's photograph. (I like to use flash because it adds drama to the moment.)

Not only does the offending vehicle come to a stop, the driver doesn't try to illegally merge until several cars have passed. I assume this is because the offender fears I might snap his plate number, too.

When using my tactics, the (frequently) law-abiding driver with the camera always wins the game. So, if all drivers had cameras, the miscreant drivers would logically correct their illegal behaviour and become exemplary citizens, and traffic would flow at optimal speed.

A caveat: I do not recommend this practice in jurisdictions where drivers are allowed to carry firearms.

I'm very excited about these brooches being sent off to a wonderful shop in Denmark!!Thank you Annie!!!

To honor the 60th birthday of dnskct and the 200th anniversary of Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo, I found this old film photo, clearly showing a woman who has lost more than one. See Dean's find at flic.kr/p/srHAsU.

Owing to their fisherman’s reporting system and growing relationship with the fishing industry, the skipper of Emily K, Falmouth, had reported a string of pots which had been lost in the winter storms.

A team of seven volunteer divers from the charity, specially trained to survey and recover lost fishing gear, set off from Mylor on board Moonshadow.

3 teams of divers searched north and south of the given marks and encountered one end of a string of pots, covering some distance to confirm the string was lost.

One of the teams found pots leading off the reef down to 33m depth, ending with the main line tangled around a boulder and a frayed snapped rope. They surveyed 12 pots in detail, finding a lot of crab and lobster still alive in the pots.

Another team found the other end of the string which stretched almost half a mile across the reef with over 30 pots. They marked this with a surface marker buoy for the return the next day.

Deemed too many to recover onto the dive boat in one go, the skipper was in contact with the local fishermen discussing whose gear it could be, to arrange assistance to recover it. The owner was contacted to discuss recovery options and he confirmed that the string should have 36 pots, lost 12-18 months ago.

The divers recovered 12 pots freeing 35 Edible Crab, 7 Spider Crab, 3 Lobsters, 10 Starfish, A flatfish and a Scallop (all alive except for 3 edible crabs) The remaining pots were marked with a buoy for the fishing vessel to recover onto their larger boat the following Monday. The divers had cleared all pots of obstructions over the 2 dives, so hauling onto the vessel was straightforward.

Jamie of Emily K told us “We were delighted to have a string of pots we’d lost in the storms, recovered. The work you’re doing is fantastic for the inshore grounds and fleet. Please keep up the good work. “

Ghost Fishing UK raise funds for their activities themselves, usually through public donations and fundraising campaigns.

No strangers to all-over advertising, NET certainly make the most of the space!! Whether the Alstom trams end up in all-over ads remains to be seen.

206 glides down the branch line to Highbury Vale with a service to Nottingham via Hyson Green.

The locomotive built to lead a nation at war.

A build long in the making...for well over a year and spanning many life changes that attempted to derail this project, Union Pacific #844 finally emerges from my workshop.

UP #844 has captured my imagination since childhood, appearing in several mini-series, TV shows and ads from the early 1990’s. With a sleek body, brutish flat face, high stepping drivers and enormous smoke deflectors, it embodies every definition of monstrous speed and power.

Manufactured by the American Locomotive Company and delivered to UP in 1944 to accommodate both wartime traffic and the projected increase in passenger service after the war, #835-844 were built upon the nearly perfected FEF-1 and FEF-2 series of locomotives delivered between 1937-1939. The entire FEF-3 series proved to be a masterpiece of design and was continuously called upon to lead top priority freight and passenger service.

#844 was delivered on a cold December day in 1944 as the final steam locomotive ever received by UP. Truly an unsleeping giant, #844 is the only steam locomotive of any American Class 1 railroad that has never been struck from the roster. Throughout her revenue career, she headed express freight, fast mail, and the most prestigious passenger trains of the central high plains and mountainous west – The Overland Limited, Los Angeles Limited, Portland Rose, and Pony Express.

Fitted with 80-inch drivers and a 300 psi operating boiler pressure, #844 generates 63,800 lbs of tractive effort. She was designed to comfortably haul a 1,000-ton train at 100 mph and would regularly run at 120 mph.

Significant research was put into this model. Before even laying out the frame I had compiled an 80-year timeline documenting every minor, and major, upgrade, repainting, and alteration. I had one specific goal in mind: to capture her high-speed passenger service essence. As such, I have modeled her exactly as she would have appeared in April of 1949 – oil burning, with a Sellers exhaust steam injector and painted in the famous two-tone gray of Armour Yellow and Harbor Mist Gray. I am proud to say that this is one of the most accurate representations of a two-tone gray FEF-3 in the modeling world.

This model is 8-wide and precisely 1:48 scale. #844 represents the absolute apex of duel-service steam and I want this model to represent nothing less. It is powered by two L power function motors in a 1:1 gear ratio so that she has both high tractive effort and can travel at high speed. The tender is fitted with a power functions control switch and two V2 IR receivers, one dedicated to each motor, powered by a 20c 7.4V Turnigy battery.

I design all my models with usability in mind. That being said, due to the #844’s unavoidable long legs, the locomotive can technically snake its way through R56 curves but is much happier with R120. I will pride myself in saying that the tender can navigate R40 due to my engineering of a unique design to conquer the flexibility challenges that plagues centipede tenders.

Custom wheels and drivers were sourced from Brick Train Depot and Breckland Bricks while the Walschaerts valve gear is from Trained Bricks. I want to particularly thank Monty’s Trains who designed and printed all stickers you see on this model. Monty also provided the technical experience that allowed me to upgrade from a standard Lego battery pack to the vastly superior LiPo world.

I strive to make my models both detailed and accessible. As such, instructions ARE available for this model in both two-tone gray and black (accurately dated to July 1954). Additionally, both liveries come with simple and complex valve gear instructions.

Today known as The Living Legend, UP #844 is the last of a great breed and represents the absolute apex of duel-service steam as one of the most powerful, prestigious and well-engineered Northern type locomotives of all time.

I feel extremely grateful to the Union Pacific Steam Team for ensuring that, through unquantifiable amounts of continuous labor, #844’s clock is not approaching twilight, but held at dawn. She is poised to travel the high iron for time eternal, forever roaring across the heartland plains and into the rising sun.

Thank you everyone for taking time to read this post, I greatly appreciate your questions, comments and praise. This model represents the end of a personal era, and I appreciate all the encouragement and support that I received from the community along the way. Railroading and Lego modeling are my passions, and I am happy to be part of these growing communities.

Europe District staff and family members volunteered at Wiesbaden Middle School to perform an energy audit for Earth Day.

Sixth- and seventh-graders were divided into seminars of 20 and met in the gym for a brief presentation by Jennifer Patterson, an Environmental Protection specialist, on the basics of a building’s footprint and energy and water audits.

Then the students and USACE volunteers recorded their findings of the HVAC, lighting, water and waste audits on data sheets.

Afterward Sibylle Ballnath, the project manager of the newly constructed middle school, briefed the students on the features of their new school.

The school opens for the 2018-2019 school year.

Mauritania, 26 to 28 December 2007:

The Director-General arrived in Rosso on 26 December 2007 at 09:30 hours, from where he continued to Nouakchott.

During his official visit, the Director-General was received by His Excellency Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdallah, President of the Republic. This was followed by a press statement. Discussions with the President and Prime Minister focussed on increasing bilateral cooperation, strengthening cooperation in the fisheries and aquaculture sector, activities to develop the agriculture and rural infrastructure sector, and FAO’s Initiative for facilitating supply response against Soaring Food Prices (ISFP).

In addition, the Director-General had working sessions with His Excellency Corréra Issagha, Minister for Agriculture and Livestock, His Excellency Assane Soumaré, Minister for Fisheries, and Her Excellency Aicha Mint Sidi Bouna, Minister Delegated to the Prime Minister in Charge of the Environment.

Discussions focussed on the overall food security situation in the world, in particular in Low Income Food Deficit Countries affected by unprecedented price hikes for basic food and inputs (seeds, fertilizers) and driven by strong demand for cereals, historically low food stocks, high oil prices and growing demand for biofuels. The Director-General informed about FAO's ISFP, aimed at improving small farmers' access to agricultural inputs and thus increasing the local food production. In this regard, the Director-General indicated that Mauritania could be one of the pilot countries benefiting from the initiative.

The visit concluded with a press conference on FAO’s Initiative for facilitating supply response against Soaring Food Prices, highlighting the reasons for, and consequences of these rising prices, and urging governments and the international community to implement immediate measures in support of poor countries that are hit hard by dramatic food price increases.

The Director-General left Rosso on 28 December 2007 at 10:50 hours.

The second auto advance and retard died in Latvia but by then I knew just what to do (or so I thought!) and had the bike running again in no time at all. All went well for a while until after an hour running I noticed oil coming from the top rear section of the timing cover. I stopped the bike to see if it had made its way to my new rear tyre and was waiting for me to turn right. It had! I stopped and tightened the screws - which didn't work - then stopped again and took it all apart. There was a two inch piece of gasket missing (or so I thought) In reality it had dropped down the side of the gearbox cover and got stuck on some oil. I was convinced it was lost so I put it all back togther without any gasket using only Wellseal and as I started the engine the peice fell to the floor. Grrr! Later it started leaking once again but only a bit so I waited until we did a hundred miles more and did it properly.

I lost a front tank bolt on a Sunday moring in Estonia. I used one from the exhaust pipe where it meets the silencer, replacing that one with a smaller one whilst the exhaust was off in Latvia. (Graham was impressed as he thought we would not get back to England with only one bolt at the front. Grahams suggestion was to wrap a small peice of the economist around a metric bolt and screw it in, which is what you can expect from a BMW owner.

Carbs went out of balance just as we entered Tallinn in Estonia (or so I thought). What had happened was that the cables had loosened enough for the outer of one of them to catch on the adjuster, therefore opening one carb before the other. Once realised, it was easily sorted. Now the bike once again will pull cleanly from 34 miles an hour in top gear. (It never did that back home).

The digital speedo has come back to life giving a fair approximation of my speed in kph.

All these niggling problems have been causing me lack of sleep which just adds to my well balanced veiw of the world when I'm at the side of the road. This is further enhaced by Graham's constant spouting on about the history of Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, or Finland or wherever we happen to be at the time of the breakdown!
