300 Students and workers march through Birmingham City Centre and 60 occupy the council chambers at Birmingham City Council for over 4 hours. Remaining protesters maintained a public protest outside the building to ensure the action was visible to a busy market square. Protests remained peaceful throughout the day.

The action in Birmingham today took place against a back from of what was the 3rd national day of action by students. It was a day of revolt—across Britain, from Dundee to Bournemouth, young people rose up against the attacks on education. The protest named X2 following day X on the 24th November and the 50, 000 NUS/UCU protest on the 10th of November.

These protests are a revolt against £9,000 university fees, the closing off of universities to all but the rich, and the abolition of the EMA allowance that 16-18 year olds rely on to go to college. But it was also about the way the Tories are ripping up people’s futures.

From the beginning of the occupations messages of solidarity flooded in from trade union representatives all over the city representing some of the most vulnerable members of the public and public sector workers under attack from the cuts including UNISON, PCS and UCU unions.

These included support workers, council workers and civil servants, support staff, teachers and lecturers in education, Connexions youth workers faced with job cuts and cuts to the services for the most vulnerable young people in Birmingham. Refugees and migrant workers will see a massive cut in legal aid, what little there is between what can mean life and death for those that are already exploited and degraded in the most appalling ways.

A statement from PCS Union representing over 300,000 civil servants said “Student protests against the attacks on education are inspirational to the rest of us. This is part of a concerted attack by this government to take away people’s rights to education, work, welfare, healthcare, housing and more. The question ultimately is: who pays for the crisis? It is clear that students should not pay for it, and it’s clear the public sector workers shouldn’t either. We should be unified in demanding that those who cause the crisis should pay for it. Keep up the fight, we can win.”

The student action was providing them inspiration and hope that there is an alternative to the CON-DEM cuts which would wreck the lives of millions.

Day X2 and day X has showed that the angry march and the occupation of Tory headquarters on 10 November was not a one-off event and there were as many if not more people involved each time.

Tens of thousands of students, especially school students, took to the streets. These school students know universities are being closed off to them by soaring fees. They know the cuts mean that only a few will get more than low-paid jobs.

The afternoon I spent on these backroads filled with the wind in the windmills and cornfields have left me with impressions that will last in my mind's eye. The memory will wash over me when I pass any cornfield from now on. The lure of spending more time experiencing the possibility of capturing endless variations of this dance is simmering within me. I appreciate the gift of these images to remind me of that day. I can feel the wind and hear the sounds of the corn leaves whipping and brushing against each other. I can feel the wonder of looking deep into the cornstalks, seeing interactions beyond the passing glance from within a car on the road. It was a good day.

The entranceway to the YHA Haworth (the Haworth Youth Hostel) in Cross Roads with Lees, January 2020. It shows the impressive porte-cochère, where carriages could draw up to the main entrance and passengers disembark without getting wet.

The Haworth Youth Hostel was officially opened on the 8th May 1976 by Councillor J. S. Bell, Chairman of West Yorkshire County Council. It is located on Longlands Drive, off Lees Lane in Cross Roads with Lees, just outside Haworth. The Hostel occupies Longlands Hall, former home of industrialist Edwin Robinson Merrall whose family owned Lees Mill and Ebor Mills in the Worth Valley which the house overlooked. Edwin was the second son of Michael Merrall. It was the last of four houses owned by the Merrall family. The house was designed by Keighley architect J. B. Bailey and was built between 1882 and 1884. The architectural style is Northern Manor House, a mixture of classical and exaggerated Jacobean styles.

It was occupied by the Merralls with their seven children up until the start of the First World War. Following the death of Edwin and his son Philip, it was sold by Mary Merrall on the 16th July 2019. The sale included 25 acres of grounds, a lodge, and a yard well away from the house with washing shed, carriage shed, coach house, harness room, a Dutch barn, the groom's cottage and a petrol store.

The property was bought by a Mr Inglis for personal use in the early 1920s, and then sold to a Mr Paley in 1939, who had plans to turn the house into a hotel. After the war it was sold to textile producers the Heald Brothers for use as a hostel for Italian immigrant mill girls. In the 1960s, housing was built on the surrounding land and the house fell into disrepair. It was sold as a retirement home around this period before the Youth Hostel Association purchased the hall for £23,500 in 1974.

The house had been brought to the attention of the YHA by local policeman Jens Hislop and the house was vested in the YHA on the 18th October 1974. It was bought and developed through a combination of grants from The Countryside Commission, West Yorkshire County Council, and the Department of Education and Science. Although it officially opened in May 1976, the hostel was active from earlier, possibly even late 1975. The first wardens were John and Sue Page and there were 90 beds. Many of the ground floor rooms, including the ballroom and lounge, were converted to staff quarters. Extensive modernisation began in 1994, including adapting some of the ground floor staff rooms into dormitory and guest rooms, and sub-dividing some of the large upstairs dormitories into smaller dormitories. Further redevelopments and improvements followed in 2009 and 2012. In 2020 the hostel boasts 89 beds across two single rooms, two double rooms, one three bedded room, three four bedded rooms, six six bedded rooms, one seven bedded room and three eight bedded rooms.

Photograph taken by History Society member Tim Neal on 26th January 2020, when the current manager invited local residences to visit and look around the Hall. Permission was given to take and publish photographs during the visit. Additional information from the YHA's Profile Sheet compiled by YHA volunteer archivist John Martin in January 2018.

Owing to their fisherman’s reporting system and growing relationship with the fishing industry, the skipper of Emily K, Falmouth, had reported a string of pots which had been lost in the winter storms.

A team of seven volunteer divers from the charity, specially trained to survey and recover lost fishing gear, set off from Mylor on board Moonshadow.

3 teams of divers searched north and south of the given marks and encountered one end of a string of pots, covering some distance to confirm the string was lost.

One of the teams found pots leading off the reef down to 33m depth, ending with the main line tangled around a boulder and a frayed snapped rope. They surveyed 12 pots in detail, finding a lot of crab and lobster still alive in the pots.

Another team found the other end of the string which stretched almost half a mile across the reef with over 30 pots. They marked this with a surface marker buoy for the return the next day.

Deemed too many to recover onto the dive boat in one go, the skipper was in contact with the local fishermen discussing whose gear it could be, to arrange assistance to recover it. The owner was contacted to discuss recovery options and he confirmed that the string should have 36 pots, lost 12-18 months ago.

The divers recovered 12 pots freeing 35 Edible Crab, 7 Spider Crab, 3 Lobsters, 10 Starfish, A flatfish and a Scallop (all alive except for 3 edible crabs) The remaining pots were marked with a buoy for the fishing vessel to recover onto their larger boat the following Monday. The divers had cleared all pots of obstructions over the 2 dives, so hauling onto the vessel was straightforward.

Jamie of Emily K told us “We were delighted to have a string of pots we’d lost in the storms, recovered. The work you’re doing is fantastic for the inshore grounds and fleet. Please keep up the good work. “

The locomotive built to lead a nation at war.

A build long in the making...for well over a year and spanning many life changes that attempted to derail this project, Union Pacific #844 finally emerges from my workshop.

UP #844 has captured my imagination since childhood, appearing in several mini-series, TV shows and ads from the early 1990’s. With a sleek body, brutish flat face, high stepping drivers and enormous smoke deflectors, it embodies every definition of monstrous speed and power.

Manufactured by the American Locomotive Company and delivered to UP in 1944 to accommodate both wartime traffic and the projected increase in passenger service after the war, #835-844 were built upon the nearly perfected FEF-1 and FEF-2 series of locomotives delivered between 1937-1939. The entire FEF-3 series proved to be a masterpiece of design and was continuously called upon to lead top priority freight and passenger service.

#844 was delivered on a cold December day in 1944 as the final steam locomotive ever received by UP. Truly an unsleeping giant, #844 is the only steam locomotive of any American Class 1 railroad that has never been struck from the roster. Throughout her revenue career, she headed express freight, fast mail, and the most prestigious passenger trains of the central high plains and mountainous west – The Overland Limited, Los Angeles Limited, Portland Rose, and Pony Express.

Fitted with 80-inch drivers and a 300 psi operating boiler pressure, #844 generates 63,800 lbs of tractive effort. She was designed to comfortably haul a 1,000-ton train at 100 mph and would regularly run at 120 mph.

Significant research was put into this model. Before even laying out the frame I had compiled an 80-year timeline documenting every minor, and major, upgrade, repainting, and alteration. I had one specific goal in mind: to capture her high-speed passenger service essence. As such, I have modeled her exactly as she would have appeared in April of 1949 – oil burning, with a Sellers exhaust steam injector and painted in the famous two-tone gray of Armour Yellow and Harbor Mist Gray. I am proud to say that this is one of the most accurate representations of a two-tone gray FEF-3 in the modeling world.

This model is 8-wide and precisely 1:48 scale. #844 represents the absolute apex of duel-service steam and I want this model to represent nothing less. It is powered by two L power function motors in a 1:1 gear ratio so that she has both high tractive effort and can travel at high speed. The tender is fitted with a power functions control switch and two V2 IR receivers, one dedicated to each motor, powered by a 20c 7.4V Turnigy battery.

I design all my models with usability in mind. That being said, due to the #844’s unavoidable long legs, the locomotive can technically snake its way through R56 curves but is much happier with R120. I will pride myself in saying that the tender can navigate R40 due to my engineering of a unique design to conquer the flexibility challenges that plagues centipede tenders.

Custom wheels and drivers were sourced from Brick Train Depot and Breckland Bricks while the Walschaerts valve gear is from Trained Bricks. I want to particularly thank Monty’s Trains who designed and printed all stickers you see on this model. Monty also provided the technical experience that allowed me to upgrade from a standard Lego battery pack to the vastly superior LiPo world.

I strive to make my models both detailed and accessible. As such, instructions ARE available for this model in both two-tone gray and black (accurately dated to July 1954). Additionally, both liveries come with simple and complex valve gear instructions.

Today known as The Living Legend, UP #844 is the last of a great breed and represents the absolute apex of duel-service steam as one of the most powerful, prestigious and well-engineered Northern type locomotives of all time.

I feel extremely grateful to the Union Pacific Steam Team for ensuring that, through unquantifiable amounts of continuous labor, #844’s clock is not approaching twilight, but held at dawn. She is poised to travel the high iron for time eternal, forever roaring across the heartland plains and into the rising sun.

Thank you everyone for taking time to read this post, I greatly appreciate your questions, comments and praise. This model represents the end of a personal era, and I appreciate all the encouragement and support that I received from the community along the way. Railroading and Lego modeling are my passions, and I am happy to be part of these growing communities.

Mauritania, 26 to 28 December 2007:

The Director-General arrived in Rosso on 26 December 2007 at 09:30 hours, from where he continued to Nouakchott.

During his official visit, the Director-General was received by His Excellency Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdallah, President of the Republic. This was followed by a press statement. Discussions with the President and Prime Minister focussed on increasing bilateral cooperation, strengthening cooperation in the fisheries and aquaculture sector, activities to develop the agriculture and rural infrastructure sector, and FAO’s Initiative for facilitating supply response against Soaring Food Prices (ISFP).

In addition, the Director-General had working sessions with His Excellency Corréra Issagha, Minister for Agriculture and Livestock, His Excellency Assane Soumaré, Minister for Fisheries, and Her Excellency Aicha Mint Sidi Bouna, Minister Delegated to the Prime Minister in Charge of the Environment.

Discussions focussed on the overall food security situation in the world, in particular in Low Income Food Deficit Countries affected by unprecedented price hikes for basic food and inputs (seeds, fertilizers) and driven by strong demand for cereals, historically low food stocks, high oil prices and growing demand for biofuels. The Director-General informed about FAO's ISFP, aimed at improving small farmers' access to agricultural inputs and thus increasing the local food production. In this regard, the Director-General indicated that Mauritania could be one of the pilot countries benefiting from the initiative.

The visit concluded with a press conference on FAO’s Initiative for facilitating supply response against Soaring Food Prices, highlighting the reasons for, and consequences of these rising prices, and urging governments and the international community to implement immediate measures in support of poor countries that are hit hard by dramatic food price increases.

The Director-General left Rosso on 28 December 2007 at 10:50 hours.

Time to try out the intervel... the intervalomom... the timer thingie on the TG-5 with a fly by selfie.

Very useful it is too, what with being able to set how many photos you want, how far apart and how long before the first shot is taken. Probably standard fare for interwotsits, but I've not had one before. Does the job though.

Built: 1914 to 1923 - Architect: John Smith Murdoch - Architectural style: Inter-War Beaux-Arts

The Perth General Post Office is a fine example of monumental civic architecture and one of a precinct of Commonwealth buildings which introduced Beaux-Arts monumentalism to the city.

The imposing building has seven main storeys plus basement and roof level rooms. It has a concrete encased steel frame faced with brick and stone. The ground floor of the east elevation is faced with granite from Mahogany Creek with Donnybrook sandstone above. Paired ionic columns rise through three upper storeys. Red brick walls trimmed with stone are set back between stone towers and form the side and back walls.

The design was conceived in 1912 by Commonwealth architect, John Smith Murdoch, in association with Hillson Beasley (Western Australian Public Works Department). The initial contract was signed in 1914 and another (after delays due to a steel embargo and a strike) in 1921 for an additional two storeys. Construction was completed in 1923.

My first bus journey of 2025 was from Cromer (Westcliff Avenue) to Holt (Hempstead Road) and back aboard Sanders Wright Eclipse Gemini 3 bodied Volvo B5TL type number 125 - SA71 SAN "Shelby Anne Sanders" these three shots taken from the front nearside top deck seat.

On a very cold January day, in this third shot Sanders MCV Evoseti bodied Volvo B8L type 127 - ED23 SAN “Erin Daisy” is captured in bright winter sunshine as it heads along the A148 between High Kelling and Bodham with the above Sheringham bound service 44 journey. Curiously, number 127 was previously captured at this location from a moving vehicle back on 7th July 2024 - see below.

Since 2023, in connection with the Hornsea 3 Offshore Wind Farm project, work has been taking place to lay an underground cable from where it comes ashore near Weybourne through to the National Grid Norwich Main Substation situated beside the A140 at Stoke Holy Cross. This has subsequently led to a number of temporary road closures across North Norfolk and associated bus route diversions. As part of the cable laying process, numbered plant access and equipment/material storage areas have been constructed at various points along the route, two of which we can see here on either side of the A148 with number 113 to the left and 114 to the right.

On Saturday, July 23, 2016, Governor Baker visited Fenway Park to honor our veterans and celebrate the Home Base Program Run to Home Base, hosted by the Red Sox Foundation and Mass. General Hospital. The Run honors current and past armed forces members both in the Commonwealth and around the nation, and raises much needed funds to aid veterans and their families.

Later on in the evening, Governor Baker joined Sgt. Kurt Power in throwing out the first pitch at Fenway Park, once again honoring the servicemen and women of the Commonwealth.

"we are not rioters"

Close to two million people hit the streets on Sunday (16th June 2019) to call on the Hong Kong government to withdraw a controversial extradition bill, according to organisers.

The Civil Human Rights Front (CHRF) figure represents 28.5 per cent of the city’s population, and would make the demonstration the largest in Hong Kong history.

It is almost double the turnout figure they gave for last Sunday’s anti-extradition law protest.

Police claimed 338,000 joined the designated walking route at the peak of the demonstration.

The CHRF – a coalition of pro-democracy groups – said the turnout was almost two million “plus one,” to represent a man who fell to his death on Saturday while protesting the bill. Protesters on Sunday wore all black and carried white funeral flowers to honour the 35-year-old man surnamed Leung.

Hong Kong proposed legal amendments in February to allow the city to handle case-by-case extradition requests from jurisdictions with no prior agreements, most notably China and Taiwan.

The bill would enable the chief executive and local courts to handle extradition requests without legislative oversight, although lawyers, journalists, foreign politicians and businesses have raised concerns over the risk of residents being extradited to the mainland, which lacks human rights protections.

On Saturday, following months of criticism, the government said it would postpone the bill and explain it further to the public.

If Wikipedia is to be believed the Nippon Foundation is "a private charity organization . . . founded by the late businessman Ryoichi Sasakawa who was indicted for Class A war crimes but later released. He is a self proclaimed fascist and has been linked to organized crime through his acquaintance to Yoshio Kodama. Despite its funding of many public health and welfare programs, the foundation has been criticized as an organization with right-wing, nationalist motives." They go on to point out that the foundation is currently headed by the founder's son who continues the same policies. The foundation was started with gambling money and the current chairman tried to buy a casino in New Jersey recently! I see their cars and vans everywhere in Tono where they support old people.

I head to Québec demain, so I'm trying to clean out my hoard as much as I can to make room for Quebec beers, today's review comes from Vancouver Island, Driftwood Brewing's Belle Royale Sour Cherry Wild Ale. Sours aren't a regular thing in Manitoba, the closest thing to a sour is the Belgian sour cherry Kriek beers you see once in a while, but hey.. this is another Sour Cherry beer as it is! This comes from Buncy's Beer Fridge from his trip in BC a few weeks ago.

Appearance: At first glance, it pours a really beautiful bright pink/cassis red as it glistens in the sun, but settles as a brune with a black cherry hue to it. Reminiscent in appearance to the sour cherry beers I've had out of Belgian breweries, I love fruity beers (aside from Mobatts takes on fruity beers) so this shouldn't scare me off.

Aroma: Similar to the bottle of St-Louis Kriek I had earlier this week, but this more of a sour first, cherry second, a sour cherry aroma first and foremost, again. Sweet maltiness, some yeast in it, not noticing any hops, but the sourness overpowers all.

Taste: The very instant it hits my mouth, even before it hits the tongue, I can tell it's a sour beer, wow... sour sour sour! Makes the St-Louis Kriek seem like more of a sweet fruity beer in a way, it's very much a very sour cherry centred beer. Sour is all I have to say. I can also taste a bit of cherry/strawberry stem in there. A bit of a copper sensation to the palate as well, incredibly hard to describe except SOUR CHERRY! Oh, now I know what it reminds me of, Kasteel Donker but with much more of a sour presence to it - the donker had a slight sweet cherry aspect to it, but that was about it.

Overall Thoughts: An after-dinner/savouring sort of beer, this isn't a beer you can drink down while watching hockey or at the bar, you have to drink this slooooowly. Incredibly sour, sour sour sour, you get the point. It's a tasty beer, but not for those who don't like sour beers. I like a sour cherry beer, so hey.. bring it on! Driftwood's Belle Royale Sour Cherry Wild Ale has 8% ABV, so share this stuff with a friend or 4, because if you pop one for yourself, you'll be drinking it for a few hours!

I go crazy, crazy, baby, I go crazy

You turn it on

Then you're gone

Yeah you drive me

Crazy...

driving home last night, as luck would have it, Aerosmith's "Crazy" was playing on the oldies rock station, (where I park my dial when nothing else seems to work). Yeh, Steven Tyler, just like I pictured him...my last shot in the flickr stream. Back in the Saddle Again. Then I get home and here's a comment from one of my favorite flickr friends, Jewellight8 (check out his photostream--it's like no other). Well, the man sez he's all about the screamin' demon--and I did have a second shot I didn't post--but hey, --won't cost a dime to add to the fun--so here ya go, Jewellight8, a second dose of Steven!

In the afternoon with my nifty fifty and a macro lens attachement ..

saw this deck little whip on the way home yesterday afternoon on highland ave. in somerville. after i snapped this pic the mother of the kid rode up on her bike to pick the kid up from kindergarten. she said she got this whip from a thrift shop down the street for 4 bucks. this is so cool that the kid rides her trike to kindergarten and locks it up out front. i like that this trike is so minimalist.

In archaeology, something begins to be "archaeological" after around 100 years. But in reality, there is no real cutoff point, and if an artifact is old enough to warrant the questions "what? where? when? how? and why?", and furthermore, if the answer to these questions can be addressed using archaeological methods and theory, then in practicality, it becomes archaeological.

So.

What the hell is this? I do not know. Since it says トヨタ (Toyota), it must be a car part. Found at one of my prof's house. She's an archaeologist ;-)

Soooooo.....

I had to think about it, but this is going to be my Project 365 pic for today. As I had anticipated, the Super Takumar 35mm/F3.5 is going to be a tough lens to work with. It's just so mediocre. The pictures are like those that come out of 1980s disposable cams.

Sure, a great photographer can probably take great photos with this. But your average joe schmoe like me? Tough, bro. Real tough. I'm going to stick with my plan though, so roughly twice a month, I'll be using this lens for the Project.

How 'bout some dem ♪DJ Shadow♪?

Military Monuments in Voronezh

The monuments of World War II have a special place among the sights of Voronezh. In 1942-1943 the line of defense passed through the city districts, and for 212 days heavy battles took place in the city. Many monuments of Voronezh are devoted to those heroic events. Citizens honor the memory of the fallen and visit the war memorials with funeral wreaths and bouquets of flowers on special days. Those interested in military history have a lot to see in Voronezh.

Monument to the Pilots (Pamyatnik Pilotam)

During the World War II, along with ground troops, Soviet pilots fought for Voronezh. For the successful fighting of the 41st Assault Aviation Regiment and the 291st Assault Aviation Division, they were given honorary names – the Voronezh troops. A monument to these courageous pilots was erected at the intersection of Voroshilov Street and Kosmonavtov Street. The monument is a MiG-21 jet fighter aircraft with the number 100. This fighter plane crashed in 1975, was written off, and in 1976 the idea arose to make a monument out of it. The initiative came from the 445th Aeronautical Research Regiment, and they were also involved in the implementation of the project. Fortified structures of aluminum sheet are installed on a pedestal, and in front of the the monument is the Aviators square.
