Night shot of Times Square, in New York City. Not the most realistic shot but with all the bright lights, and excitement of such a lively place, it sure felt like this at times.

A late night shoot in Times Square, New York.

We shot Times square on 3 separate evenings over a 5 day trip to New York, guided by landscape phototographer Adrian Oakes.

It's true what they say; New York really is the city that never sleeps. Even in the wee small hours, there is plenty of life and activity to be found.

Wanting to make the most of the opportunities to be had day and night, we shot around the clock and must have averaged about 4 1/2 hours sleep.

Almost eveything I shot was taken with my 8mm Samyang fisheye lens, to pull the skyscapers into the shots from all angles.

This is converted back to 14mm in software, to straighten out the curved lines of the buildings.

I hadn't realised until I edited this, but I think Adrian is in the mid foreground to the right of the shot, with his tripod.

Ramadan 2016 was the longest in decades, due to coinciding with the summer solstice. Although he is fairly well-traveled, Adel Zo had never been out of Algeria during the holy month. He struggled with the work schedule, with missing his mother, and with the lack of community vibe. As a two-pack-a-day smoker, food wasn't even his biggest sacrifice. Halfway through Ramadan, he switched to working overnight shifts in Times Square, which was somewhat easier than the day shift had been, and occasionally allowed nearby cart workers to break fast together. Formerly a database administrator for Algeria's Ministry of Health, Adel fondly remembers people napping at his office or even at the mosque during Ramadan. Definitely not an option when you're hustling smoothies 12 hours at a time.

Hi friends! Are you on Instagram? If so, please follow me @nancyc_huang (www.instagram.com/nancyc_huang/) for photos that are about 95% different than what I post here on Flickr. I'm currently working on a long-term project on the stories of immigrant street food vendors in New York, and will be sharing a few of the photos I've posted there. I have a description & essay format on nancychuang.com/streetvendors.html , but I really hope you'll join me over on Instagram for newer images & continuing progress.

New York is the most populous city in the United States and the center of the New York metropolitan area, one of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world.[6] The city is referred to as New York City or the City of New York to distinguish it from the State of New York, of which it is a part. A global power city,[7] New York exerts a significant impact upon commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education, and entertainment. The home of the United Nations Headquarters,[8] New York is an important center for international diplomacy[9] and has been described as the cultural capital of the world.[10][11]

On one of the world's largest natural harbors,[12] New York City consists of five boroughs, each of which is a county of New York State.[13] The five boroughs—the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island—were consolidated into a single city in 1898.[14] With a census-estimated 2013 population of 8,405,837[4] distributed over a land area of just 305 square miles (790 km2),[15] New York is the most densely populated major city in the United States.[16] As many as 800 languages are spoken in New York,[17][18] making it the most linguistically diverse city in the world.[19] By 2013 census estimates, the New York Metropolitan Area's population remains by a significant margin the United States' largest Metropolitan Statistical Area, with approximately 19.9 million people,[20] and is also part of the most populous Combined Statistical Area in the United States, containing an estimated 23.4 million people.

A Night in Times Square

Empty Times Square in midtown Manhattan after New York's first big snow of the year.

Shot January, 2018

Sony A6000

I recently got contacted by an agency in Singapore that commissioned me to shoot with the new Canon 6D. The assignment was to take pictures in the streets of NYC to show off what the 6D can do. The images are going to be used in Asia to promote the camera. I wouldn't mind if more jobs like this come my way, it was a pleasure. Over the next week I'll share some of the pictures I took with the 6D...
