Thick Fog, full moon and Eastham Oil Terminal providing the backlighting hidden in the fog.

This field has a bit of a slope and with the fog heavy on the right the straightened natural horizon looked weird. So, i have straightened it a bit artificially, resulting in me looking like i'm leaning into the shot. I kind of think it suits the mood of the photo.

Tours are coming thick and fast at the moment and the immaculate Statesman rake always photographs well. So, after Northwich I had enough time to join the gallery at Moore Lane this morning and LSL turned out a pair of Blue 'Duffs' 47614 (47853) and 47593 which was a bonus.

Enveloping the world in a dense, impenetrable fog, fog creates a feeling of isolation and loneliness, changing the perception of the environment, fog confuses the mind.

Sea lions are pinnipeds characterized by external ear flaps, long foreflippers, the ability to walk on all fours, short, thick hair, and a big chest and belly. Together with the fur seals, they comprise the family Otariidae, eared seals, which contains six extant and one extinct species (the Japanese sea lion) in five genera. Their range extends from the subarctic to tropical waters of the global ocean in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, with the notable exception of the northern Atlantic Ocean. They have an average lifespan of 20–30 years. A male California sea lion weighs on average about 300 kg (660 lb) and is about 2.4 m (8 ft) long, while the female sea lion weighs 100 kg (220 lb) and is 1.8 m (6 ft) long. The largest sea lion is Steller's sea lion, which can weigh 1,000 kg (2,200 lb) and grow to a length of 3.0 m (10 ft). Sea lions consume large quantities of food at a time and are known to eat about 5–8% of their body weight (about 6.8–15.9 kg (15–35 lb)) at a single feeding. Sea lions can move around 16 knots (30 km/h; 18 mph) in water and at their fastest they can reach a speed of about 30 knots (56 km/h; 35 mph). Three species, the Australian sea lion, the Galápagos sea lion and the New Zealand sea lion, are listed as endangered. 14674

Finca Romelia Orchids and Birds, Colombia

The Butterfly Place in Westford opened for the season today, as they do every Valentine's Day. I've been looking forward to visiting, and made sure to stop by before school vacation brings big crowds next week.

Mist as thick as fog is not uncommon on cool mornings. I can stand by the water and watch it rise like steam as it collects until the sun is high enough to burn it away.

I loaded up the kayak for the first time this year and headed down to the cape for sunrise, hoping to get onto some alcids in Provincetown Harbor. The weather conditions were absolutely perfect with mainly clear skies, very little wind and unseasonably warm temperatures, and this very accommodating bird made the round trip worthwhile.

Guess I was just lucky to find a bench on this day, with no chance of seeing ocean (to the side and front of the bench).

The girls remained in Adrienne’s living room, but everything felt eerily altered.

“They can’t see us, but we can see them,” Kayla whispered. “I moved us between dimensions.”

Through the thick fog that now separated them from their previous reality, Adrienne clung tightly to Kayla’s hand, watching the two men enter the room. Their movements were sharp, calculated, as they began combing the house.

“No one’s here. Check the device,” one commanded.

The other rushed to the closet, his fingers trailing the empty space on the shelf where the device had been only moments ago. “It was here. Now it’s gone. They were here… and they have it.

A deep, guttural growl rumbled from the bald man as he surveyed the room.

Then, abruptly, he turned—his stare locking onto Adrienne and Kayla, as if he could see beyond the veil. His nostrils flared as he inhaled deeply… Adrienne held her breath.

“The stench is strong. They were here. Not long ago. Maybe they still are.” His voice was rough, primal, as his gaze scoured the space. “We will return. We’ll track their signal.”

Again, he took in the air, then slashed a hand through the space where the girls stood. It passed through harmlessly, though he swung again. And again.

Frustration boiled beneath his skin, erupting into another low growl. “I will have you both.” With that final promise, the two men turned and left.

The fog gets really thick here on our mountain, and often stays with us for days at a time. It is a magical when the sun breaks through like this.

This Stella d'Oro daylily has been blooming since the beginning of spring! And she still has several buds remaining. The huge hosta to her left has been out just as long and is also still going strong. The mountain climate appears to perfect for many of my favorite plants. I hope the daylilies I brought up from Savannah fare half as well as these.

Small finchlike bird, compact and short-tailed. Generally yellow below and dark blue-black above with stout bill. To identify male euphonias, focus on crown and throat: on Thick-billed, crown is entirely yellow and throat is yellow. Females are extremely difficult to separate from other euphonias, especially Yellow-crowned, but often seen in pairs or small groups with more distinctive males. Frequents open forested habitats, edges, and gardens.

This one was photographed in Colombia guided by Neotropic Photo Tours.

The cheetah or hunting leopard (Acinonyx jubatus) is an atypical member of the cat family that is unique in its speed, while lacking climbing abilities. Therefore it is placed in its own genus, Acinonyx.

It is the fastest land animal, reaching speeds between 110 and 120 km/h in short bursts covering distances up to 460 m, and has the ability to accelerate from 0 to 110 km/h in three seconds.

The adult cheetah weighs from 40 to 65 kg. Its total body length is from 115 to 150 cm, while the tail can measure up to 85 cm in length. Males tend to be slightly larger than females and have slightly bigger heads. The cheetah's chest is deep and its waist is narrow. The coarse, short fur of the cheetah is tan with round black spots measuring from 2 to 3 cm across, affording it some camouflage while hunting. There are no spots on its white underside, but the tail has spots, which merge to form four to six dark rings at the end. The cheetah has a small head with high-set eyes.

There are several geographically isolated populations of cheetah, all of which are found in Africa or Southwestern Asia. The cheetah likes to live in an open biotope, such as semi-desert, prairie, and thick brush, though it can be found in a variety of habitats.

Phrygilus is a genus of mainly Andean seed-eating Tanagers commonly known as sierra finches. Phrygilos means finch in Ancient Greek. Traditionally classified in the bunting and American sparrow family Emberizidae, more recent studies have shown them to belong in the Thraupidae.

Water Thick-knee (Burhinus vermiculatus), Chobe National Park, Botswana, March 2023.

The species is found across sub-Saharan Africa, usually close to water. Across its range it is found on the edges of lakes, estuaries and rivers, as well as mangroves and also some sheltered beaches. It also needs bushes or nearby woodlands for shelter. The water thick-knee is a terrestrial feeder that forages at night. Although it is typically associated with water it can be found foraging up to 1 km from water. It feeds on insects, crustaceans and mollusks. The water thick-knee generally breeds in the dry season or early rainy season. It is a monogamous breeder with both parents guarding the nest and brooding the eggs.
