When my father taught me baseball, batting specifically, he always said to keep my eye on the ball. This turned into a life lesson.
This photo is about remembering the ones I care about and not thinking about how long it has been since I have seen them.
Back-story for props: the bear is the first birthday gift I received from my wonderful girlfriend. Every time she comes to visit, I try to get her rose to give to her at the airport. It then sits in a beer bottle in our bedroom - this one is from the last time she visited.
During exploratory class, one day a week, students in grades 3, 4, and 5 are taught art by Ms. Amanda Bristol. She created an Art Exhibit with their finished products for parents to view at the Spring Fling on Saturday, March 8, and Parent CRCT Night on Tuesday, March 11, 2008.

I recently taught this workshop at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington (USA). It was called "Altered Book Shrines". My students were amazing, and produced some beautiful work! Some of these are still 'in the works'...

The ruins of the teaching block's top floor. Well, it was ruined anyway, but setting it on fire settled it for sure.

Soft speech with heavy words that come from no book,
Where are the followings, how do we reach the truth?"

Phyllis taught english at the high school I attended and also played the fiddle. She brought my brother Pat and I to the Old-Time Fiddler's jam sessions and to our first year of the Festival of American Fiddle Tunes. She also introduced us to Tex Standefer who started teaching me how to make violins. Phyllis also made several violins.
We taught him to balance these large sticks. To pick it up in the middle rather than drag them. We've also taught him how to take them through narrow gaps and to swing the stick side on as he passes people, so the stick doesn't kneecap anyone. He's pure muscle. I've never met a dog could dig his heels in better when he doesn't want to go anywhere. He can glue his bum to the floor just by shifting his centre of gravity. You would never win in a game of tug. He appreciates your effort but always looks smug when he wrenches the ragtag toy from your grasp.
BELinda & I headed up to St Emilion around 30 minutes north of the city of Bordeaux. Our wine guid Bruno taught us about the pyramid classification of wines, which we all know the higher the better. So! In saying that, we kicked off at a winery that started back in the 17th century Château Beau-Séjour Bécot and toured the caves of the chateau & the history dates back to WW2 & the French Revolution where they hide people in the caves. Cool huh! Next was a wine store (not vintage cellars) Martin Vins where we tried ~9 reds, ~ 3 whites & 2 sweet wines all before midday :S
The day gets a more relaxed & blurred from lunch. We had a beautiful lunch filled with scallops, charcuterie, duck & lamb and wine. We even kinda met (bonjour status) a "rare" female winemaker who was lovely. We visited a few more chateaus Fter lunch which were fun, but the wine store & Becot couldn't be beat, quality! Salut
Eugene Von Bruenchenhein
Born Marinette, WI 1910-
died Milwaukee, WI 1983
Eugene Von Bruenchenhein was an American self-taught artist from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Over the course of fifty years, from the 1930s until his death in 1983, Von Bruenchenhein produced an expansive oeuvre of poetry, photography, painting, drawing and sculpture.
A bakery worker by day, Eugene Von Bruenchenhein was a photographer, painter, sculptor, and poet by night. Although he had full confidence in his talent (calling himself a “Freelance Artist—Poet and Sculptor—Inovator [sic]—Arrow maker and Plant man—Bone artifacts constructor—-Photographer and Architect—Philosopher”), his oeuvre was known only to his wife and a few others in his lifetime. He was born in Marinette, Wisconsin, and lived most of his life in Milwaukee, where he met his wife, Evelyn Kalka (ten years his junior), in 1939. They lived modestly in a small house that his father, a sign painter, had built, but their everyday life was rich with imagination. Von Bruenchenhein shot countless erotic photographs of Evelyn, whom he nicknamed “Marie,” his muse and queen of the kingdom of their bungalow.
In the portraits, Marie poses in every stage of dress and undress, in ordinary attire or luscious fabrics, with tin crowns, flowers, or Christmas ornaments. Von Bruenchenhein staged and styled the photographs with materials and props at hand, such as densely patterned drapes and quilts for backdrops, and he printed the images in his home darkroom. While some portraits of Marie are dramatic and seductive, others are quotidian and evoke an innocent sensuality. Most are black-and-white, and some are hand-tinted with capricious hues. Although Von Bruenchenhein was influenced by the pinup culture of the 1940s and 1950s, his photographic work—all revolving around Marie—offers something subtler, a convergence of imagination and domesticity, a shared intimacy between wife and husband, both of whom have real presence in the final images.
Von Bruenchenhein never finished high school and was completely self-taught in art. After his mother died when he was seven, his father remarried, and Von Bruenchenhein’s stepmother, a former schoolteacher, writer, and painter of floral still lifes, became his mentor. Enormously prolific, he left behind several thousand works, including sculptures made from poultry bones, concrete masks, musical instruments, poetry, prose, and paintings. The latter—which he rendered with his bare fingers, edges of corrugated cardboard, or brushes made from Marie’s hair—depict other-worldly landscapes with mysterious plantlike forms and apocalyptic visions evincing his fear and fascination with the Cold War and the nuclear bomb. When Von Bruenchenhein died in January 1983, his home was crammed full with his unseen oeuvre. That same year, Daniel Nycz, a close friend, stirred the interest of the Milwaukee Art Museum in the work, and by September the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Wisconsin began cataloguing the entire collection. Since then, Von Bruenchenhein’s work has been exhibited widely and accessioned into the collections of the Kohler Arts Center (Sheboygan, Wisconsin), the Milwaukee Art Museum, the High Museum of Art (Atlanta), Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art (Chicago), the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum (Washington, D.C.), the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (Kansas City, Missouri), the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the New Orleans Museum of Art, the American Folk Art Museum (New York), and the Collection de l’Art Brut (Lausanne, Switzerland).

SAAM’s collection of folk and self-taught art represents the powerful vision of America’s untrained and vernacular artists. Represented in the museum’s collection are pieces that draw on tradition — such as quilts — as well as artworks that reveal a more personal vision. The museum has reimagined its permanent collection galleries for art by untrained artists, which now display several dozen recent acquisitions and an expanded presentation of the beloved Throne of the Third Heaven of the Nations Millennium General Assembly by James Hampton.
americanart.si.edu/exhibitions/folk-art
Recently acquired works by Consuelo Gonzalez Amezcua, Emery Blagdon, David Butler, Ulysses Davis, Ralph Fasanella, Clementine Hunter, Dan Miller, Joe Minter, Eddy Mumma, J.B. Murray, Achilles Rizzoli, Melvin Way, Charlie Willeto, Clarence and Grace Woolsey, Purvis Young, and Albert Zahn join visitor favorites by Thornton Dial, Lonnie Holley, Martín Ramírez, and Jon Serl. A striking presence in the galleries is a display of more than sixty sculptures and paintings by Emery Blagdon that represents his constantly changing Healing Machine. It is the second-largest installation of his work on public view in the United States.
The new installation of the Throne includes Hampton’s personal journal, written primarily in an asemic, or unreadable script, and a chalkboard still showing some of Hampton’s sketched plans for the Throne. Both are on public view for the first time; the journal will be on display for a limited time.
he Smithsonian American Art Museum’s collection of folk and self-taught art represents the powerful vision of America’s untrained and vernacular artists. SAAM is one of the only major museums to clearly advocate for a diverse populist and uniquely American voice within the context of what is traditionally considered great art.
Themes
Artists who are deeply engaged with personal exploration often create works of profound complexity. Recurring themes include struggle and persistence, salvation and protection, and the reshaping of personal worlds through creative expression.
The Collection
SAAM was among the first major museums to champion and collect works by self-taught artists. This aspect of SAAM’s collection spans works that emanate from folk traditions, such as quilting and woodcarving, to highly innovative works of great personal vision. It began in 1970, after the astonishing Throne of The Third Heaven of The Nations’ Millennium General Assembly, made by James Hampton, came to light in a makeshift studio not far from the museum following the artist’s death. Several donors made it possible for this iconic work, understood as a seminal representation of African American cultural and artistic heritage, to become the cornerstone of a collection that aimed to tell an ever-expanding story of America through the art of its people.
Since it acquired Hampton’s “Throne,” the museum has been recognized internationally as a leader in championing the importance of works by artists who have no formal art training. In the early 1980s and 1990s, Chuck and Jan Rosenak donated many important works to the museum. SAAM’s largest single acquisition of works by self-taught artists came in 1986 with more than 500 works from the ground-breaking collection of Herbert Waide Hemphill Jr., which firmly established the museum’s ongoing commitment to this work. Important gifts from Bill Arnett, David L. Davies, the Kallir Family, Josh Feldstein, Margaret Parsons, Judy A. Saslow, Patricia S. Smith, Mike Wilkins and Sheila Duignan, and others followed. In 2016, Douglas O. Robson donated ninety-three works of art from the collection of his mother, Margaret Z. Robson.
Today, SAAM’s collection of folk and self-taught art features more than 400 artists and 1,300 works of art. The collection is one of the most visited and widely admired of its kind.

Kevin Duffy self taught or outsider Artist, lives in Ashton in Makerfield Wigan.
He bought a house next to an allotment field and began clearing the land, which took six years. During this time he began selling plants to passers by and slowley his reputation grew. Almost by accident he transformed the allotment into a business. He eventually sold the house and built a bungalow on the site where he now lives and manages the business with his son Carl.
The garden is a very special place, it is completely unexpected, despite being so close to the road it remains an unknown treasure. The garden did feature on the BBC northwest tonight programme in October 2006, where it was compared
to Portmeirion in Wales. Kevin is rightfully proud of his work and intends to continue developing and expanding it. The work is a life lond passion for Kevin, and he gets much pleasure from seeing people enjoying the space. A visit is highly recommended, there is nothing quite like it.

Romanians taught to claim UK benefits in return for joining union t.co/DXJrJXLD6f #Unite #EnemyWithin #bbcnews #skynews #bbcqt #bbcaq The Unite union, Labour's biggest donor, is courting foreigners from the two countries as part of a membership drive.
As I've taught The Crucible over the years, I've always asked the students to make a big yellow bird to hang in the corner of the room because in Act III there's supposedly a bird in the corner of the courthouse. Finally, this year these girls took me up on it and made me a bird! The boy made a little one that we put under the larger bird's wing. Hilarious.
So I taught myself to knit (from the Internet!) And I taught myself how to sew (pulled that one out of my ass)! And look! I MADE A SCARF. All by myself. This photo is about as good as my sewing... meaning... it blows (OMG, Glamour Shot chin pose!). I just snapped it real quick with the photo booth on the Mac, because I couldn't wait to share it with you. I'll take better, much cuter photos of my pretty scarf later (which, by the way, is made from yarn produced from recycled bottles, so I'm like, totally good for the environment and stuff).
Martha Stewart can suck it.
