Poptech is an annual conference that happens in Camden, Maine every fall. This year the Poptech family has added some special Poptech Salons which deliver the conference energy to a smaller audience.
The second Poptech Salon called Science, Living Systems and the Edge of Change took place on June 22nd in Washington, DC. This salon took a look into the researchers and scientists who are revolutionizing the way we look and interact with 'complex' living systems.
The old schoolhouse in Pleasant Park just outside of Conifer Colorado. It also happens to be in the path of an uncontrolled wildfire burning West of Denver. The portrait of Heather was taken just yards from this building and this entire area now faces the possibility of being erased from the map. The cause of the fire? A controlled burn by an unnamed government agency (as of yet) to help control the fire potential during the hot summer months. Hmmm, let's start a control burn in a forest during the driest March on record (0 precipitation) and with winds exceeding 40mph with gusts up to 70MPH! Nothing bad could happen right? So far one dead, at least 25 homes confirmed destroyed and 900 families evacuated whose homes are directly in the path of the conflagration. This land is full of ranches and because of the extreme danger in the area the evacuation of livestock, mostly horses, has been denied by the sherifs dept.
The utter stupidity of the people responsible for this "controlled burn" amaze me. The actions of these intellectual titans need to be brought before the judicial system and made to pay. What were they thinking?
