SALT LAKE CITY — L3 Communication Systems-West presented an in-kind donation to the Utah Guard Sub-for-Santa program Dec. 6 at the Salt Lake Armory.
According to Capt. Noé Vázquez, director of the Sub-for-Santa program, donations from private citizens and organizations like this will ensure a more meaningful Christmas for military families in Utah who have indicated a need for support this year. As of Dec. 5, the Utah Guard Family Support Services office projects helping about 300 children during the holiday.
The Utah Guard Sub-for-Santa program was originated in 2003 after many community members realized the sacrifices that our Utah servicemembers were performing. The intent of the community members was to give back to military families, with deployed members and who were in need. Last year, the Sub-for-Santa program assisted nearly 400 children in need. While this program specifically assists those dependents of our Utah military who might go without during a holiday season, the program does accept general gifts for the parents or family gifts.
Sub for Santa is dedicated to helping people who cannot help themselves. An application process verifies that the donations go to the families who need it most. Applicants are also given the tools and resources with learning opportunities to help them better manage their money, time, and talents from a Family Assistance Center.
Those wishing to make a donation to the Sub-for-Santa program can make payments online at the following link: utngtrust.org/charitable_trust_1_1/subForSanta.php.

On the 8th of October 2008 I witnessed the back-up of seven or eight 23 buses because one had broken down in the middle of Westbourne Grove at Ledbury Road. The disabled bus was positioned in such a way that it was impossible for another bus to pass by. I hear this is becoming a regular occurrence around London. Is this recessionary deferred maintenance, or a covert industrial action?

Snowshill Manor was the property of Winchcombe Abbey from 821 until 1539 when the Abbey was confiscated by King Henry VIII during the Dissolution of the Monasteries.
Between 1539 and 1919 it had a number of tenants and owners until it was purchased by Charles Paget Wade, an architect, artist-craftsman, collector, poet and heir to the family fortune. He restored the property, living in the small cottage in the garden and using the manor house as a home for his collection of objects. He gave the property and the contents of this collection to the National Trust in 1951. There are two aspects of Snowshill Manor: its garden and the manor house, which is now home to Wade's eclectic collection. The garden at Snowshill was laid out by Wade, in collaboration with Arts and Crafts movement architect, M. H. Baillie Scott, between 1920 and 1923 as a series of outside rooms seen as an extension to the house. Features include terraces and ponds. The manor house is a typical Cotswold house, made from local stone; the main part of the house dates from the 16th century. Today, the main attraction of the house is perhaps the display of Wade's collection. From 1900 until 1951, when he gave the Manor to the National Trust, Wade amassed an enormous and eclectic collection of objects reflecting his interest in craftsmanship. The objects in the collection include 26 suits of Japanese samurai armour dating from the 17th and 19th centuries; bicycles; toys; musical instruments and more. On 5 October 2003, the house was closed and its entire contents removed in order to effect a number of repairs. In particular, the electrical wiring needed updating, new fire, security and environmental monitoring systems were installed, and the existing lighting was improved. The house reopened on 25 March 2005.

These icons are still found on the road in a few places around Indiana, marking the route of the defunct state-wide network of bicycle touring routes, known as the Hoosier Bikeway System.
It was fun to spot some of the few remaining icons on roads that hadn't seen much traffic or been re-paved in the last 10 years.
Overall, I found the route suggested by this system from Batesville to Clifty Falls to be very well done, although dated in minor ways, like sending us to an entrance to Clifty Falls that no longer exists. It was disappointing to find that numerous intersections along the route simply didn't label what the roads were-- even main roads-- which would be a hindrance to anyone traveling the roads. We were always able to use context clues in those cases to make a correct enough guess.

The Projects with Under-Served Communities (PUC) program at The University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin) allows students to apply their education towards the physical implementation of a project in a underserved community. For the past year our group has worked to implement a solar energy system to be installed at a children’s malnutrition clinic in San Agustín Acasaguastlán, El Progreso, Guatemala. The PUC Guatemala team consists of eight engineering and social work students who aim to provide a sustainable energy solution for a children’s malnutrition clinic in rural Guatemala, where poverty and chronic undernutrition continue to be a substantial social problem. By implementing this solution, we hope to allow the clinic to continue successful operation with a consistent and sustainable source of energy, and to eliminate the cost of electricity for the clinic so funds may be redirected to purchase medical equipment, food, and other basic necessities, such as diapers and bottles, which will contribute to the overall well-being of the patients.

MCDONNELL DOUGLAS F-4N PHANTOM II
WEAPON SYSTEMS TRAINER
Weapon Systems Trainers are used to train flight crews in the use of their aircraft's weapons systems. This cockpit was part of a US Navy McDonnell Douglas F-4N Phantom II Weapons Systems Trainer. The system was installed in a large truck trailer. Inside the trailer are three units: the instructor unit, the computer unit, and the flight unit. The instructor unit is where the instructor monitors the students as they fly the simulator and work the weapon systems. It contains duplicates of the relevant flight and weapons instruments. The computer unit contains the computers for running the simulator. The flight unit is where the cockpit simulator was installed. It is the exact copy of an actual cockpit with workable flight controls, radar indicators, armament controls, and radio controls. Systems that are not important for the students are represented in the cockpit but left inactive. This cockpit was bolted to the floor trailer and did not move. Weapons system trainers are still used today. Modern trainers are usually mounted on a motion platform giving the flight crew a more immersive training environment.
