Viewing the peak of the synchronous fireflies in the Elkmont region of the Great Smoky Mountains is one of those magical events that you will never forget. It's like being in the middle of natures rave.
A Huge flock of Lesser flamingo (Phoeniconaias minor) roaming like the storm was framed from the ground level. They were really uncountable, all across the horizon but the noise and synchronous patterns were just amazing and can only be cherished in the field. I had to lie down in the muddy and salty wetland for long with my heavy tele only to frame this. The Blue water and sky along with their pink colours were just an amazing match for each other. A view's delight indeed. Pics was taken from Little Rann of Kutch, Gujrat, India.
Wingtip to wingtip, a flock of Black Skimmers synchronously takes a long lap before settling on East Beach, Galveston, Texas.
P.S. I told you there were going to be a lot more Skimmer photos!
The tropics-loving showy zephyrlily grow from hardy bulbs that have naturalized in many parts of the Western Hemisphere. One odd trait Rain lilies share is that their star-shaped flowers come into bloom after it rains, hence the common name. With their array of flower colors, sweet fragrance, and synchronous blooming, these plants have become a popular option among gardeners and breeders.

These two handsome Great Blue Herons were playing "Follow my Leader" at Malibu Lagoon State Beach. They were trudging synchronously through the water, one standing tall and the other lying low !! Funny to watch !
Suspended at a height of more than 25 m above the piazza of K21 is the enormous installation in orbit, a work by the artist Tomás Saraceno. The installation appears as a surreal landscape, and is reminiscent of a sea of clouds or floating planetary bodies. The physically accessible work is constructed of virtually transparent steel mesh that interlaces three levels spanning the massive glass dome. Five air-filled “spheres” are positioned within the net structure that encompasses an area of 2500 m².
Visitors are invited to enter the installation, and explore it by climbing. The brave ones who venture into the structure look upon museum visitors down below, wandering in the piazza, as miniature figures that occupy a miniature-like world. From the ground floor and the mezzanines of the Ständehaus, the installation’s visitors on the net look like floating in the sky.
Once several people enter the structure simultaneously, it is set to motion, altering the tension of the steel cables and distances between the three levels of the interlaced net. The floating space now becomes a vibrating web of relationships, resonances, and synchronous communication.
Like a spider in a web, visitors perceive the presence of others through vibrations. This echoes Saraceno's interest and research, carried in his studio in Berlin, on new hybrid and more-than-human forms of communication, and co-habitation.
In terms of scale and discourse, in orbit is at forefront of Saraceno's oeuvre. Even those who are reluctant to enter the structure, suspended high above an abyss, and who decide instead to explore the installation in exclusively visual terms, will find themselves confronted with themes of flying, falling, and floating, and gripped by archetypal emotions that are associated with these experiences.
"To describe the work means to describe the people that use it – and their emotions," explains Saraceno. Rarely does a work of art touch fears and desires of viewers so intensely, and alters the perspectives of those who decide to step into an airborne condition.
in orbit was planned by Saraceno together with engineers, architects, and biologists from 2011 to 2013, and it is one of the artist’s most elaborate installations. Despite the fact that the network construction alone weighs three tons, and the largest of the "spheres" 300 kg, the work, created specially to the spatial condition of the Ständehaus with a meticulous precision, is remarkably light: its fineness and stability hints to the structure of a spider's web.

It never ceases to fascinate me to see a flock of pigeons making their rounds over the same rooftops of a city. They fly up spontaneously, do the same round two or three times and dismount again, all synchronously, without a director. These joint exercises don't seem to have any purpose, except perhaps for play or social interaction.

As she clutched onto the firm grip behind her Ronnie, nestled snugly on the sleek motorbike, a wave of tranquility washed over her. The gentle hum of the engine became a soothing symphony, lulling her into a sense of absolute safety. The open road stretched out before them, beckoning them towards a horizon painted with endless possibilities.
The cool breeze weaving through their hair, carried with it the promise of new adventures. It whispered tales of dreams waiting to unfold, of aspirations that was soaring high like the eagles circling overhead. With her heart filled with boundless trust, she leaned into her partner and surrendered to the present moment.
Every mile of their journey they traversed became a testament to their unwavering bond. The rhythm of the bike beneath them echoed the synchronous beating of their loving hearts. The world outside faded away, replaced by a shared sense of purpose and an unbreakable connection. In this intimate embrace, she was enveloped by an unwavering belief that together, they could conquer any challenge that was lying ahead.
As the endless road continued to unravel before them, she was reminded of the enduring power of trust. It was the cornerstone of their partnership, the foundation upon which their dreams were built. With every mile they rode, she was filled with a deep abiding faith in her companion, knowing that she would always have their back, just as her partner had hers. And so, they journeyed on, carried by the wind, propelled by their dreams, and bound together by a love that knew no bounds.

A Painted Stork (Mycteria leucocephala) was ready to fly with a catch fish in its beak. This was to avoid being robbed by other members. It was a spectacular scenery to witness a mass hunting behaviour not only by the painted storks but cormorants and darters as well. They all chased down fishes from different angles at the same time and fishes were taken in a shock. All the events started suddenly but synchronously and lasted for five minutes. Pics was taken from Bharatpur, Rajasthan, India.

And they remembered to point their toes.

I was watching a flock of brown pelicans fish close to shore when I started trying to capture them in the dive. These two were pretty close together in mid-dive.

The title of the image is the title of a mystical poem by St. John of the Cross, as translated by Willis Barnstone ( New Directions Paperback ). The text in the image are the first lines of the poem.
Years ago I fell in love with Barnstone's incredible translations of St. John's mystical poems. They suggested a level of experience beyond all our everyday understanding and are remarkably free of any "religiosity". Being so free of dogma and tradition the true spirit of the mystical experience could be somewhat apprehended as a universal one and not just attached to a particular tradition.
It was the unknowability of what the mystic experiences, as translated here as "rising beyond all science", that fascinated me. Not only that, Barnstone's translations are pure poetry in themselves. They're every bit as beautiful and transporting as Coleman Barks is with Rumi. Whether those words are religious, spiritual or mystical, they suggest a level of experience and mind beyond the every day. This fascinates me.
This is not a religious image. If anything it's a reflection on the poem and what it might mean to rise "beyond all science". If we take "science" to mean the rational, analytical mind and not literally the discipline of discovery, we get closer to the poem's actual meaning, I think.

Today we got an interesting e-mail reminding us that October 15 is All Buffleheads Day. Here is some interesting facts about one of Canada's smallest ducks (380 g) gathered and shared by FOSH (Friends of Shoal Harbour) and Sidney, BC, biologist and Bufflehead expert Kerry J. Finley.
All Buffleheads Day, the 297th day of the solar year (typically October 15th) is a constant based on 23 years of observation in Shoal Harbour Migratory Sanctuary, in Sidney BC on southeastern Vancouver Island in the Salish Sea.
The variation around All Buffleheads Day (ABD) is very small (+/- 4.14 days based on 23 years of constant observation). This precision is a world record in timing; but, more importantly, the variation is nonrandom and predictable.
All Buffleheads Day is a national event because All Buffleheads migrate synchronously from coast to coast. It is an international, circumpolar phenomenon because weather and climate have no boundaries, and it’s universal because planetary waves are universal.
Pelicans can be graceful, almost "ballet'ic" in synchronous flight or in the water—but pelicans can also display complete disharmony! There wasn't quite enough room on the log for the whole group, and of course there's always the "odd man out"!

The song of this soul
in the hollow of my ear
calls my dream
to its opera
I would like it in your arms
endlessly, without waiting
it is the Creator
who enters homes
to forge the world
He understands the languages
of each human being born
the clarity
for Him everything is simple
He knows the deep needs
of which we do not speak
the impious and the pious
can turn to Him
in lightness
when His art operates
like a wind in music
synchronous vibrations
The song of this soul
has no roof
but your artistic body
poet in the wind
you make its supports tremble
its woman's legs
mysterious flesh
the soul in me is not present
it is on earth
welcoming its step
the invisible is never seen
through the skin
it is the light
coming from beyond the body
that she wears, queen
serene is her voice
when she says a word to you
that kisses the air
wonderful kiss
that embraces you both -
the unique music.
