Georgia Northeastern Job 103 shoves onto the lower switchback to bring down the second cut of cars for Imerys. 3-6-23
This is Hat Creek Road in Deer Gulch, which is about halfway between Salmon, Idaho and Challis, Idaho.
Mount Whitney was just breaking through the clouds as seen from the Alabama Hills, east of Lone Pine. I liked the line of a switch-backed road snaking up the mountains.
Borrowdale in the Lake District of England in winter. This is the River Derwent just before it enters Derwent Water.
I know...more from the same mountain...but I just love the clouds and the views! And there was rain from a few of the clouds but we were lucky we didn't get hit with one of the typical late afternoon thunderstorms. As you can see, we are high above teh tree line here.
The road to the top of Pike's Peak is a thrill in itself..the views are amazing and the drop-offs are probably terrifying for anyone with a fear of heights. The sky was so pretty towards the east as we drove down the mountain, in low gear as directed. At one checkpoint they make you pull over and they measure the temperature of your brakes. We stopped there to walk around and watched one guy get told to park for an hour because his brakes were at 600 degrees!
From Mt. Dickerman Trail, above the Mountain Loop Highway in the northern Cascades of Washington state.
cody is an amalgam of local drunks and hole in the wall history. you find your own way to weave the lore. i just remember the horse that got me up the mountain and back.
Cloudy day at Makara, but still managed to have a play with the Samyang Fisheye and an off camera flash.
On one of the July swelter days of summer I made my way up to the cooler Lefthand Canyon again then turned up Heil Canyon. Even though I have been up to the open space before, I never remembered the corrals and ranch buildings... or the trash heaps but I wasn't trolling with my digital camera then. I walked up the road from the old dump at Heil Canyon stables and ranch found corrals defining several pastures up to the open space trail that wander off to the left. The corral fencing is made of the most rustic materials that ever built a fence in the Rockies. I decided to edit these for a new series. After I opened this capture, I decided I needed to pursue this set as a minimalist series. The fence is almost overgrown by the rich mountain meadow grasses. This hay sells for a premium on the flats. Who knows who might have laid this fence out?
Here is a shot part way up the old road that actually traveled over Red Hill from Lyons along the old road to Jamestown in the canyon and up Deer canyon to the Golden Age, Balarat and Gresham.
I'd better get a move on, the day is beginning to swelter... the temp was 97 when I got back to town. I came close to melting. The temps were well up for that spell and I am still waiting for a release. We'll, OK I would have turned in the distance at Golden Ponds anyway but here I am wandering about the foothills and this is a fine place too.
There are a lot of hikes at Bryce Canyon National Park. We didn't get to hit many of them during our first trip to the park, but a particular hike, the "Navajo Loop - Peek-A-Boo" trail is one that stole our hearts. The switchbacks seen here are a part of the initial 600 ft drop into the basin/wash. The walls suck you right on down, as you glare at the hoodoo shapes and texture. It's quite the experience!

I love hiking switchbacks! Such a great workout.

More sunburst n switchback gold, from a killer sunrise mission on Walna Scar with Pete Archer. At this time of year there really is no excuse to get out and enjoy dawn - so set those alarms! ⏰
Drop me a comment if you’ve experienced a mountain sunrise... and where was it?

Ft.Wayne,IN. switchback. Track makes S, then arcs to the right around pole yard then straight back thru pole yard on diamond to access gate between the two buildings left by parked cars. Believe It's PRR. 1967.
It's Alum Rock Park but I nicknamed it "the switchback park" as it has quite a number of switchbacks.
The loop from Penitencia Creek to South Rim Trail and South Woodland Trail is about 4 miles with 700 feet in elevation gain.
Not the best picture, but did want to show the switchbacks. You get this view when you are on Imogene Pass Road. The switchbacks go up a lot higher than the obvious ones you can see. Almost to the upper left corner of the photo.
May 23, 1991: Led by a well-worn ex-Seaboard Coast Line C30-7, southbound miscellaneous train W289 has paused at the top of Hagans Switchback to allow an empty man (in the background) to clear up on the stub-ended "Old CV." Some of the crew members from both trains are having a quick chat by the switch in the distance.
The South Rim Trail in Alum Rock Park has quite a number of switchbacks. Some parts of the trail are tricky to navigate with narrow steep path.
