Don't look for a reported bird! Look for the cameras and long lenses beneath the tree.

Alright it's a bit harder than that. But it's a handy short cut which meant this shot took only around two hours of waiting, watching, waiting, waiting…This one has obligingly adopted the conventional swift parrot pose and is feeding on the tiny lerps on this eucalypt.

Ironically, the other local swift parrot hotspot is adjacent to an urban development where the food trees which are attracting them are being removed. They only breed in Tasmania, fly across Bass Strait and feed through summer on the mainland before flying home. And there's about 1000 of them left in the wild. That's why cutting down trees shouldn't be so easy.

The Swift is seen here in outside storage prior to being moved into the new Aircraft Factory exhibition inside the Museum's grade II listed “Bellman” hangar. The Brooklands Bellman hanger is the only remaining example of four originally built on the site and was constructed in 1940. During WWII it was used for final assembly of Wellingtons and Warwick’s.

In 2015 the Museum received a £4.6 million grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund for improvements. The project included moving the Bellman Hangar off the Finishing Straight and restoring it nearby.

Now I have them both, the Vulcan is a nice binocular but just one look at the build quality of both tells me that that no way could the Vulcan have been more expensive to make than the Audubon surely?

They slowed the Skokie Swift down for a while after the last derailment but it feels to me like it's back to old school operations at this point. Bullet train speed, roller coaster fun.

A grabshot. Don't know why i like it.

Swift fox

Class: Mammalia

Order: Carnivora

Family: Canidae

Genus: Vulpes

Scientific Name:Vulpes velox

Description: The Swift Fox has a dark, gray/tan coat changing to orange/tan on the sides and legs and white or buff on the chest and belly. It has a black-tipped tail and a small black muzzle patch on either side of its pointy nose. It is about 30cm (12in) in height and 79cm (30in) long (the tail makes up 50% of the total length).

• See Map

Distribution and Habitat: Once common across the western plains of North America, the swift fox was nearly eradicated by hunting and habitat loss. Today the swift fox is considered endangered and has a relatively small range from the southern Canadian prairies south to the prairies of the midwestern United States.

Diet: Omnivores, swift foxes eat primarily rabbits, mice, squirrels, birds, insects, lizards, carrion, grasses and fruits. Their diet changes with the seasons.

Life Cycle: Swift foxes mate between December and February with pups born in March to early April. Four or five kits are born with eyes and ears closed. Swift foxes move their young from den to den frequently to be near food sources and to avoid the skin parasites (mange) that build up in dens over time. Swift fox kits remain with their parents for their first summer. Coyotes, badgers, golden eagles and bobcats are the main predators of swift foxes.

Adaptations: Unlike other foxes, swift foxes use dens year-round rather than just while they are raising their young.

The Swift Fox (Vulpes velox) is a small fox found in the western grasslands of North America, for example in Colorado, New Mexico and Texas. They also live in Alberta in Canada. Some mammalogists classify it as conspecific with the Kit Fox, but many scientists have distinguished the latter from the swift fox, for reasons basically related to size: the kit fox is slightly larger than the swift fox, and the latter has a narrower snout.

Swift Foxes weigh about 2 or 3 kg. They are primarily nocturnal, and are more heavily dependent on their dens than most North American canids. They suffer serious predation by coyotes.

Like most canids, the swift fox is an omnivore. Rabbits, mice, ground squirrels, birds and lizards are staples. Grasses and fruits round out their diet.

Recent research has shown that social organization in the swift fox is unusual among canids, since it is based on the females. Females maintain territories at all times, but males emigrate if the resident female is killed or removed. This unusual structure may arise because the males have a smaller role than in many canids in bringing food to the young, because it is rarely worth the effort to bring insect prey back to a summer den.
