Swift Campout is a loosely organized (if at all) event, in a way, where people are encouraged to go on overnight bicycle camping trips. The first Swift Campout was organized by Swift Industries, a Seattle-based company that makes bags and accessories for bicycle touring, about 5 years ago as a means of self promotion (it seems) and to encourage group rides and exploration of parks and campgrounds within an easy ride.
thousands of Vaux Swifts going into the chimney at Chapman Elementary School to roost for the night. Still photography does this spectacle no justice as it's really all about the swirling motion of thousands of birds moving together en masse. It's amazing, especially when a peregrine falcon dives into the mix and catches himself a meal.

A swift is a tool used by knitters to hold a long coil of yarn (called a skein) while it is being wound onto a ball winder or other apparatus.
This simple swift is made from 4 lengths of 1" x 2" oak, two of which make up the base. This picture shows the cross members of the base (middle) in between the two cross members that make up the rotating top (left and right).
The center spindle is composed of a 3/8" x 5" carriage bolt, three 3/8" washers, two 3/8" nylon spacers and one 3/8" wing nut. The rods that hold the yarn are 3/8" oak dowels.
An unexpected bonus while sitting by the pond - a rare Swift Parrot landed over head and sat briefly - long enough for me to grab a few shots- nothing brilliant but it was in deep shade against the sky and almost straight up as you can see from the pics

I noticed, while taking pictures, that the jetpack fit here. It makes a nice "convertable" head-rest.
