At the heart of this small town, with medieval tower and Victorian Gothic
chancel. The nave and aisles however are unusual, 1729-30 by the Woodwards of
Chipping Campden, The exterior is Gothic, the window tracery Victorian but
looking odd, but inside Tuscan columns support the ceilings as in any Georgian classical church. No porch, but a life-size seated effigy of Sir Hamilton
Seymour of 1882 welcomes you under the tower. The church's saving grace is the
architecture of the dead, with a top-class table tomb and effigies of Sir Fulke Greville d1559 and wife, with effigies of the 16 chldren on the sides of the tomb, one son and one daughter depicted in shrouds. The 1st Marquis of Hertford is tucked away in a sort of vestry come meeting room south of the chancel, a pity really as it is a fine depiction by Chantrey, dated 1828. Pevsner &
Wedgewood ignore one of the oddest features, a sort of triptych and dated 1683, with two internal glazed panels with lengthy paper inscriptions, but the doors with external text but inside four painted scenes, each with a line of scriptures and extolling good deeds done for the poor rather than biblical
scenes. It is placed between two windows, the glazing making it impossible (for me) to photograph with or without flash.

Apparently this used to be the site of a small bridge over the Kaskaskia. Anyone know exactly what the function of the little tower might be?
