A pleasant day out with Jim the Joker on Tuesday.
Weather was cack but we weren't to be deterred.
Here the pioneer DBS Class 66 No.66001 heads the 6C27 Carlisle Yard - Shap Summit Quarry departmental straight past the quarry itself!
No need for panic though as it's necessary for the loco to run around its consist at Tebay in order to access the quarry, which is on the "down" side.
The Eselberg in the western part of the region is the highest mountain (or better hill) of the region Bucklige Welt (~ world of hills). His summit is wooded and has still to exist without a own summit cross. But the summit is still marked and not completely wihout a cross. ;-)
Twelve Mile Summit. 2,982 ft. the little hill compared to the next summit to go over, Eagle Summit. 3,624 ft. Highest of three summits on highway....and no guardrails...not bad on a windless day....or should I say on a windless minute because it can change that fast up there...
A couple hundred makers and teachers gathered at the ReMake Education Summit, held August 3 - 5, 2016, at Studio 180 in Santa Rosa, CA. I went there with my associate Sarah Brewer, who is helping me teach our maker art classes this fall. It was a great way to connect with other educators and learn from each other.
The conference started with a few short speeches by co-host Dan Blake, Doug Dougherty and others. We then made simple objects together, such as a ReMake T-shirt made with vinyl-printed designs heat-pressed onto the cloth.
The morning keynotes were inspiring, as presenters shared their experiences as maker educators. They taught at different levels, from pre-K to higher ed, yet they all observed that activities that are hands-on, project-based, student-driven and collaborative can help students find a sense of purpose -- and give them the confidence that they can change the world.
We spent the rest of the day joining a variety of breakout sessions ranging from crowdsourcing your makerspace, to learning how to program a Raspberry Pi, control animated robots or how to assess the impact of maker education on young learners.
I gave a talk about our Maker Art classes, which combine art, tech and storytelling for young learners. I showed videos and photos of our recent Wonderbox and City of the Future courses, and how they help students develop their creative, technical and social skills in a playful way.
Many thanks to the team at ReMake and 180 Studios for organizing this fine gathering. They did a great job connecting teachers and resources. It was great way to share best practices, brainstorm new ideas, and start new collaborations. Well worth the trip!

Summit of Binsey. Incidently while I was up there I found a little camera bag and some DVD RW's. If these are yours, (long shot I know) drop us a line!

The earlier Ballast Train is found tied down for the night at Summit Siding in Tehachapi, CA., at the summit of Tehachapi Pass. Despite being in town, half this train is going uphill while the other half is going downhill. A lone Z train heads East/South on nothing but clear blocks as this train idles away.

The summit is halfway home. On top of Rexford after soloing the east ridge, about to start downclimbing the west ridge. Note ugly green rad pants.
This looks much better than the previous attempt! The moon is a bit washed out, but it all blends better I think. Five photos stitched together. You can see left to right...
