Bhagat Singh, in a sense, was a continuation and development of the great tradition of 1857, our first War of Independence its tradition of uncompromising battle against imperialism and its domestic allies; its recognition of the potential of the peasantry; its grounding in a rich tradition of composite culture. 2007 marks the 150 th anniversary of 1857, too. Let us resolve, on the occasion of this historic confluence, to carry forward the heroic legacy of 1857 and Bhagat Singh to its fulfilment. .

[Below we reproduce the introduction written by Comrade Vinod Mishra to a publication by Radical Youth Association (RYA) on Bhagat Singh.] .

Fiftieth year is to pass since we became independent. Casting a glance over our surroundings, we find a putrefying scene around. Particularly, the all-round degeneration of the Congress party, that claims to have led the country in the freedom struggle, raises some basic questions. During the freedom struggle, revolutionaries had raised their fingers at the ideology and working methods of Gandhi and Congress. They even had apprehensions that independence might prove to be mere transfer of power from white sahibs to coloured ones. Today, that apprehension has come true. The most resolute representative of this revolutionary stream was Bhagat Singh, whose ideals and ideology have become quite relevant in the present phase. In 1825, at the age of 18, Bhagat Singh became the General Secretary of Naujawan Bharat Sabha, formed in Lahore in 1925 and on March 23, 1931 , after spending two years in prison, was hanged to death along with his comrades-in-arms Rajguru and Sukhdev. At the time of his martyrdom, he was only 23 years old. In such a short tenure of office and in such a tender age he organised so many revolutionary activities on the national level and studied and wrote on almost all subjects on such a vast scale that one is bound to feel astonished. The ruthless British rulers thought it better to silence this brilliant brain, overwhelmingly popular those days. And history bears testimony to the well-known fact that rejecting the public opinion, Gandhi refused to pose cancellation of death sentence to Bhagat Singh as a precondition to the Gandhi-Irwin Pact. Bhagat Singh's popularity was fast becoming one of the greatest challenges to the Gandhian leadership. The authentic history of the Congress party itself says, It would not be an exaggeration to say that those days Bhagat Singh was known all over India and his name was no less popular than that of Gandhiji. Still more important was Bhagat Singh's transformation from a revolutionary terrorist to a Marxist. It formed the main basis of the tacit agreement between British rulers and the Congress leadership to send Bhagat Singh to the gallows. Gandhi himself admitted that he dismissed the idea to make revocation of death sentence to Bhagat Singh a precondition to the agreement he entered with Irwin; rather, he stressed that the death sentence must be executed before the Karachi session of his party and it was what exactly followed. .

burning ambition to live like Bhagat Singh. Chandrashekhar, who had twice been the JNUSU President, went to seek out those people in the broken-down village hutments of his hometown Siwan, and, as he sought to light the spark of protest at a street corner in JP Chowk, was gunned down by the goons of the mafia RJD MP Shahabuddin. Avtar Singh Pash, Bant Singh Jhabbar, the women of Manipur, Shah Chand Mukhiya of Arwal, Chandrashekhar ... truly, Bhagat Singh lives and dies, again and again, in those who insist on confronting the black evil who rule India today, who refuse to give up the dream of a country and a world free from exploitation. That dream faces repeated assaults: the NDA told them India was Shining; the UPA tells them that their Government is Caring and Compassionate. Our nations people continue to be forced into starvation, suicide, unemployment, and displacement their lands, crops, seeds, water, all being shackled to imperialist economic policies by Governments, be it NDA or UPA. Manmohan Singh sings praises of British rule, and forces India to become an ally of Bush, the Supreme Commander of US imperialism. And each of us faces the challenge of exposing and resisting, not just Bush, but his Indian agents in the UPA too. Pash wrote, Sabse khatarnak hota hai hamare sapnon ka mar jana. On the 75th Martyrdom Year of Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru, as well as Pash, JNUSU celebrates that dream of freedom that never dies with a film on Spartacus. The might of the Roman Empire was rooted in slave labour and the Adi-Vidrohi had fought for an end of exploitation of man by man. We salute his memory, and the memory of all the Vidrohis of human history who continue to die for a world where humanity may live free from exploitation. Join .

The protesting farmers, under the aegis of the Bhartiya Kisan Union (Ekta) Ugrahan group, have been gathering at the village gurdwara since Monday. Today, the village turned into a virtual battleground when a mob of about 2,000 farmers armed with lathis and other sharp-edged weapons marched towards the disputed land around 2.30 pm, shouting slogans against the government. The 600-strong posse of security personnel, including Punjab Police commandos and CISF personnel, first used lathis and burst tear-gas shells before firing several rounds of plastic bullets at the farmers to prevent them from entering the Trident complex. .

At least 25 farmers and seven policemen were injured in the free-for-all on the outskirts of this village. While many farmers were rushed to Dhanaula Civil hospital, a few were referred to Government Rajindra hospital in Patiala. .

Later, many of them, some with blood oozing from their wounds, once again gathered at the gurdwara, where they are now sitting on an indefinite dharna. Decrying the use of force by the authorities and charging them with supporting the Trident group, BKU (Ekta) president Joginder Singh Ugrahan and general secretary Sukhdev Singh Kokrikalan said: We will continue our indefinite dharna till we get back the farmers land. We will not be frightened by the use of force. .

While Deputy Commissioner Surjit Singh Dhillon said the situation is under control now, and precautionary measures are continuing, Barnala SSP Naresh Arora said at least seven police personnel have received injuries during the clash. .

Later, SAD(A) leader Simranjit Singh Mann came to visit the agitating farmers along with SAD leader Daljit Singh Bittu. Condemning the incident, he accused SAD(Badal) of not coming to the farmers aid. .

From British Raj to Bush Raj Resist Imperialism! .

We dont wish to suffer by inviting a black evil to replace the white evil. Indian workers must come forward overthrowing imperialists as well as their Indian agents who wish to perpetuate the same economic system rooted in exploitation

-Bhagat Singh, Draft Revolutionary Programme, 1931 .

Indias Prime Minister declared that the British Raj was an instance of Good Governance, and has also rolled out the red carpet for Bush Raj on Indian soil. Indias rulers, be they of the NDA or UPA, are allowing the US to dictate what our relations with other nations will be, what our farmers will grow

they are selling out every aspect of our economy, our lives. We see Jallianwala Bagh repeated by police with the Honda Workers in Gurgaon. Hunger and peasant distress have reached the same levels that they did under the British resulting in starvation and suicides of the rural poor and farmers. The deep communal wounds left by the British on our polity continue to bleed periodically. .

Isnt Bhagat Singhs warning of black evil replacing and reproducing the white evil coming true in front of our eyes? .

23 March this year marks 75 years of the martyrdom of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and .

the Knowledge Initiative on Agriculture? Faced with these questions, our rulers will reply with lathis and bullets; their apologists will censure and condemn us; but ask these questions we must and will, if we, the citizens of the country, wish to salute the memory of Bhagat Singh and his comrades. On 23 March, join an Anti-Imperialist Convention, to be addressed by leading writers, intellectuals and activists who will speak of the implications of the Bush visit and the aspects of imperialism today. .

Fees Hike At No Cost! MHRD and Their Cronies On Campus Get Lost! .

AISA congratulates the student community for the massive participation in JNUSU's call for a protest march to the MHRD against the latest MHRD circular dated Sep 12 -a circular which is essentially a blueprint for converting university spaces into exclusive enclaves of the rich and the privileged. In the midst of tremendous academic pressure, students boycotted not just their classes but also their exams in protest against the World Bank-IMF dictated agenda of fee hikes, levying of user charges for basic facilities and withdrawal of hostel subsidies. The large student mobilisation at the protest march was a fitting rebuff to all those forces in this campus who have been working overtime to try to diffuse the mass anger against such assaults on the basic idea of an inclusive university which will always keep its doors open to students from all social and economic backgrounds. .

This campus has seen an intense mobilisation against the MHRD circular over the past two weeks. Worried by the massive and spirited mobilisation of students for JNUSU's Fees Hike Roko Juloos, the YFE and NSUI were finally goaded into breaking their silence on the MHRD circular. On the eve of the protest march to the MHRD, NSUI, sensing that there would be an unprecedented mobilisation of students from JNU, Jamia and DU against the polices of their masters in the UPA, predictably came up with a laughable attempt to diffuse the mobilisation and confuse the student community. According to the NSUI, the rector has "assured" them that the MHRD circular will never be implemented in JNU, given the socially-inclusive character of the university. The NSUI then goes on to piously inform the student community that they are against such "anti-student" and "anti-education" policies prescribed by the MHRD. We would like to inform the NSUI: it is their own masters in the UPA government who are implementing these anti-poor, anti-student policies in the name of "austerity"! The student community, unfortunately for the NSUI, does not suffer from selective amnesia. We are well aware that the NSUI is the student wing of the Congress, and that the main work of the NSUI is to try and generate support for the Congress's neo-liberal regime which is wrecking havoc on millions of workers, tribals and students all over the country. .

The NSUI, true to its job of playing the agent of the UPA in the campus, also claims that the MHRD circular is a routine affair, and the proposals are "advisory" rather than a directive. We would like to inform the NSUI, that much as they would like to hide the real nature of the MHRD circular, the recommendations are there for everyone to see. Let us take another look at the following line of the MHRD circular: .

It is reiterated once again that these economy instructions are mandatory in nature and no relaxation would be possible (page 3 of the MHRD circular) .

.

Is the NSUI seriously trying to tell us that words like "mandatory" and "no relaxation is possible" are merely "advisory"? Will NSUI kindly explain why their own UPA, whose trumpet they are so fond of blowing in this campus, is prone to sending such "anti-student", anti-education" advisories on a regular basis? .

.

.

Will the NSUI care to clarify: if they indeed think that the MHRD circular is anti-student, then are they ready to ask their godfathers in the MHRD to immediately take back the Sep 12 circular? .

.

.

At any rate, their own beloved Yuvaraj stated in JNU that 20% of a university's expenditure should come from students. Will the NSUI care to clarify their stand on this? If they are indeed in favour of students funding 20% of the university's expenses, will they explain how this can be achieved WITHOUT these "anti-student", "anti-education" policies mentioned in the MHRD circular? .

.

.

The NSUI, after holding forth for a long paragraph in its pamphlet on how the JNU administration is "corrupt", "Stalinist" and prone to unnecessary expenditure at the cost of basic needs of the JNU community, suddenly develops a touching confidence in the administration's integrity in the very next paragraph. For the NSUI therefore, a mere "reassurance" from the Rector that the administration is not planning to implement the MHRD circular's recommendation is sufficient to set their minds at rest. We would like to inform the NSUI, that JNU's student community understands your politics of playing the loyal agent of the JNU administration and the UPA, and will never fall for your attempts to derail a movement for basic student rights. .

If the NSUI predictably tried to sabotage the mobilisation for the protest march to the MHRD, the YFE also predictably brought out the only kind of pamphlet they are capable of: viciously casteist, anti-poor, and anti-student. True to their hierarchical brahminical ideology, the YFE has insulted even the legacy of Comrades Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev, Ashfaqullah, and Chandershekhar Azad by deliberately using the surnames of these .
