I decided to knock this out today. The mockup is actually quite strong. That makes me feel pretty confident about it being strong enough when I actually make it out of steel.
I may alter it a little bit before it goes to metal, but I would say this is pretty accurate. It's hard to be 100% accurate using just hand tools to make this, though.
The replacement reinforcing panel, in 2mm thick steel. Just like the floor sections, I shaped it while red hot (should have been a blacksmith!)
July 1964 Budd Company press photo of subframe assembly of new 1965 model NYCT R32A passenger unit on assembly line at the Red Lion Road assembly plant in Northeast Philadelphia.
The R32 fleet consisted of 600 60' stainless cars in two contracts: R32A (3350-3649, purchased by the City of New York) and R32 (3650-3949, purchased by the New York City Transit Authority through a 1963 agency bond issue). The fleet was delivered between August 1964 and September 1965 (except the last four cars 3946-3949 with Pioneer III trucks in December 1965).
Assembled from 9 subframes, each of which composed of ~2000 stacked frames, this lunar mosaic presents my first attempt at mosaic processing and occupies a significant portion of my hard drive. Large surface details such as Mare Nectaris are visible with shadow contrast provided by the lunar terminator.
