Flat stones projecting from Incan terraces in Peru were my first encounter with these simplest of stiles. I love them and I love the way that human ingenuity came to the same notion in the wonderful parallel evolution of ideas.
This stuff bothers some people. They can't see how the limits of physics and the properties of materials constrain outcomes. In their minds we need fanciful migrations, divine direction or visiting aliens to carry ideas which logically evolve with no influence beyond the human mind and Nature's laws.
Applying reductio ad absurdum logic, ask what would have happened if the builders of ziggurats, Egyptian, Mesoamerican or Nubian pyramids, even the Borobudur of Central Java began adding stones to a structure that pointed downwards. Doesn't work; not even for the most artistic mind. Quite logically, all around the place, if you pile stuff up and you don't want it to fall down, the pointy bit is at the top.
If there is a need, an available material and a mind to put those things together this is what you get: stile style. Not only that, it works better than imported notions. Today I took a wander over to the dilapidated bird hide on Loch Gretchen. This entailed negotiating a vertical ladder up one side of the sheep dyke, rotating 180⁰ on a tiny wooden platform then descending another vertical ladder on the other side. It was terrifying! A few stones like this, old school, and there's none of that perilous centre of gravity hanging out in space business. Here you ascend, straddle, then descend without risk. That's style!

Red carpet in place, celebrity style came to RAF Brize Norton on Friday 11th October as the very first BRAVOS Awards took place.
The awards were to recognise personnel, military and civilian on station for the superb work they do, day in and day out at the largest RAF Station in the UK. Group Captain Steve Lushington, Station Commander was delighted to kick off the awards “Tonight is all about the people at RAF Brize Norton who do a fantastic job every single day. This is a night to recognise them.”
Celebrities also turned out to make this an extra special evening: Victoria Pendleton and husband Scott Gardner, comedian Kane Brown and his lovely wife Suzy, former Lions fullback Tim Stimpston, Oxford United Football Club. BRAVOS Awards 2013

Sergeant Ryan Briggs who won the Triumph Through Adversity Award said “I’m quite humbled.
“You just do your job. As tasking as it was, I just had to get on with it. “I was more concerned about the guys who were involved”.

This was a new "City Style" Barbie ("hobbit body") that I purchased last spring at a KB Toy Store. Her hair was choppy and mid-back length and I purposely bought her to give her a bob. It took a while, but I'm pleased with it. Her clothes are a very recent carded (no shoes) outfit.
