The National Theatre in Košice was the last edifice to be built on the Hlavné Square in Košice in 1889. The remarkable and eclectic building is the work of A. Lang, who was considered one of the most talented European architects of his time. Born in Prague, he came to Košice after winning the prestigious international tender for the design of an art gallery in Budapest. He applied his knowledge of historical architectonic styles when working on the theatre building, which is considered his best work. He sensitively combined the elements of the Baroque and Art Nouveau styles. The Façade of the building is decorated by sculptures depicting scenes from mythology and the theatrical world. The richly figural and ornamental decorated interior has a stage in the shape of a lyre.
