HAVING STYLE
by Quentin Crisp
The object of having a style (as opposed to merely being stylish) is not to be different from other people, but to be more like yourself than nature has made you. A really good portrait is more like you than your own face. Ignore other people. Mr. Sartre says, "Hell is other people." But not if you ignore them.
You must decide who you are and be it like mad. Do not decide on a lot of bizarre mannerisms with which to encrust our self — just as a writer does not decorate boring material with bejeweled phrases (as Mr. Wilde was wont to do). Take away all the words that are irrelevant to your meaning. In other words, style is a process not of accumulation but of denudation.
Mr. Sargent said, "A portrait is a likeness with something wrong about the mouth." But really a portrait is more than that. If you are not spectacular in any way, the unspectacular is your style. You must be able to imagine someone saying to one of your acquaintances, "Come to my party and bring that hum-drum friend of yours." And everyone knows that it means you.
I was asked on one occasion if one could be dowdy and have style, and I thought immediately of Eleanor Roosevelt.
The reason why style is so important is because if you are sure of yourself you do not seize upon a group style — your class, your nationality, your sex. You can avoid this pitfall if you never use the word "we" except to mean yourself and the person to whom you are speaking. It is a mistake to say (or even to think) "we lost a football match" — I didn't loose it, you didn't loose it. Eleven other people that we don't know and have never even heard of us lost it. So, do not go raging through the streets of the Netherlands breaking everything in sight and killing many of the inhabitants.
Stay with it! Never give up!
This is a style that is called "Suji-mori" seen at the party in Japan recently.
A Japanese young of recent seems to tend to like such style.

Valentina Vasilatou, who lives in Euston, is wearing an old black t-shirt which she transformed into a skirt, a long sleeved red top from Zara, a black cardigan from Rouge, and some chunky black boots from Stratford. The 20-year-old, who is studying costume design at Central St Martins College, only got her hair braided the night before, and although “it hurt so much [she] couldn’t sleep”, she was very pleased with the final look.

Florence Evans, 20, from Ireland, is wearing Topshop from head-to-toe, except for her green bag from Accessorize and the little flower headband that she picked up in Camden market. Florence, who works at Lock 17, is dressed in a leather jacket, a multicoloured, floral-print dress and nude pumps. With her bright red hair, and even brighter red lipstick, it doesn't come as a surprise that she is a “fan of colour”. She said that when it comes to style, “don’t go with what’s popular, go with what you like”.
Kate Michelle works at The Ark, a 40s and 50s vintage shop by Camden Lock, and said “I spend most of my wage here”. But for a change, today she has put together her monochrome look with items from Topshop and Zara. She admits: “What I wear really depends on how hungover I am that day.”

I loved stylist Mary-Anna’s look. I particularly liked the structure of Mary’s vintage jacket, it works so well with her Donna Karan skirt and her cool-cat hat.

I think this is the sweetest thing I've ever seen at the dog park. I can only assume the dog was too old to confortably walk together with his owner and the rest of his pack, but not old enough to miss on such a sunny day and the countless smells and sights.
Something about this reminds me of Robert - I can see him carrying Toaster in his sled :)

Gordons Bay has many expensive homes on the hillside. This view taken from the harbour, shows what a variety of styles these homes have.
Medi Habid, 25, who has been out enjoying a few ciders by Camden Lock ‘prints cool T-shirts’ for a living. Along with a printed shirt, he wears a jacket from Zara, trousers from Topshop, and a pair of rather trendy shoes from Clarks. He warned us that he has a rather large amount of intricately printed shirts in his wardrobe ready for the sunny weather.

Built in 1907 in a very eclectic style.
As I said in comments: "I can definitely see some Jugend (or you may call it Secession) features combined with Neo-Gothic style. Also Neo-something-else, Baroque or Renaissance. Rather ridiculous — but still good to see in a city. Entertaining, if nothing else!"
