Study of an Old Woman

This drawing shows the same woman featured in Study of an Old Woman hanging nearby, but the technique is very different. Here there are no careful, feather-light contours, but strong, almost bold, outlines and heavily accentuated hatching lines.

Part of Nicolaes Maes: Dutch Master of the Golden Age
(February to September 2020)
From illicit goings-on in servants’ quarters to portraits of high society, Nicolaes Maes captured life upstairs and downstairs in the Dutch Golden Age.
Starting his career as one of Rembrandt’s most talented pupils, this exhibition – the first in the UK devoted to Maes – charts the artist’s rise to fame.
Through nearly 50 paintings and drawings, it follows Maes’s move away from paintings of historical and biblical scenes, where Rembrandt’s influence is most clear, to the scenes of everyday life and portraits that made him one of the most sought-after artists of his time.
Maes was an astute businessman, and produced over 900 portraits, adapting his style to reflect the high fashion and decoration of the second half of the 17th century. But it is his ‘genre’ scenes – which often feature the central character eavesdropping and breaking the fourth wall to interact directly with the viewer – which best reveal Maes’s inventive and distinct style.

Visitors view objects in the Center's Collection of Prints and Drawings. There are 20,000 drawings and watercolors and 30,000 prints in the Center's collection, giving a comprehensive history of British graphic art.
Nature Color Studies.
Yet again „the walk“, I guess you know every single tree as well as I do right now ... BUT: I tried few things with the rendering, both while taking the shots and when processing them. When shooting I used a Kenko Nostaltone Orange, which is basically a diffusor and warming filter combined. That's where the color and softness comes from. I used a zoom lens all the way open, which gives vignette and fall off and a bit of additional softness. when proscessing them in LR and PS I payed attention to „fill the highlights with color“ and control the highlights in general. There was a beautiful „soft sunshine“ today (partially cloudy), and the light was so nice I hope I could capture that a little bit at least.
