studio shoot with Ben Myberg, Amo`re Coetzee and On The Rocks Camera Club

Studio shooting is completely foreign to me so crits and comments are definitely welcomed, as always.

My friend Jay started a meet up group that began last Saturday. He loves the indoors, hates the outdoors and I'm a lover of natural light. It was chaos in his studio with about nine guys and myself. Two younger female models, two areas set up with pocket wizards. All of us were just shooting like crazy.

One guy let me use his lens baby and I had never touched one before. When it got time for me to jump in and shoot the models, of course I wasn't able to get my camera set up correctly by just screwing a pocket wizard on top and going. So another photographer gave me his 20d, on raw (I never shoot raw), and I just went from there.

The models were great but all of the posing is against what I'm comfortable shooting. I'd rather shoot quiet moments than shooting a perfect S curve pose. So that took some getting used to as well.

Getting out of my comfort zone is a little tricky but I'm learning, ready to get more hands on experience with using a flash. This was one of my favorites because she's not cheesin' and over the top in my opinion. She makes you guess what she's thinking...at least for me.

*01.21.08 edit - here's another shot someone took of me messing with the lens baby.

Still Life with roses, wine and candles

We had a Flamenco Dancer at our recent Camera Club Meeting so I had my first attempt at cutting and pasting her into a more appropriate background than the Studio at the Bellhouse Club. Really pleased with the effect. The fan she is holding in her right hand was a right so-and-so to properly remove the original background from as it had LOTS of little holes in it.

My hobby photo time has been really limited (obviously) but I've been working for a little while to put together what I needed for a garage studio, starting with a head-to-toe white seamless setup based on Zack Arias' tutorial (and if he reads this.. thanks!). Over the past few days our cars have been out in the cold while I finally cleaned out the garage, assembled everything and experimented with getting it just right. This is the first shot of our boys to come from it :)

2/28/11 I don't keep regular sketchbooks, but I think I should be more diligent about taking snaps of things I'm physically "sketching out" in the studio.

A Shot of the Far Wall

New studio set. Actually my first studio set up :) First attempt at a studio style shot. I recently picked up a remote trigger (for my 430 EX ii). a shoot through umbrella and stand, a 43" reflector, a backdrop stand, a black muslin, and a white muslin backdrop. The game room (which it usually Dolce's indoor training ring) will now double as our studio. First attempt I started basic. Black backdrop, flash shooting through umbrella 45 degrees camera right. Silver reflector camera left and slightly behind model. Still have a lot to learn, but at least I have taken the first step :)

Finally!! The studio remodel is complete - Yay! Now more room to work, more storage space, bright lights and my own friggin' desk with enough room for my puter. Thanks to IKEA for all the shelving and storage caddies. I'm cheap, so I got the desk from Craigslist for free! It's in perfect condition, just needed a little Murphy's Oil Soap and a black marker to hide a few minor dings that happened when we tried to move that sucker, and she's as good as new. Thing must weigh close to 200 pounds. It's decent quality wood, not the typical Walmart self assembly kind. And for free too!! Setup my color Laser Printer that I got from Amazon. If you're looking for an inexpensive laser printer, I would recommend the Samsung CLP-415NW (www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008HSIW20/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_tt...) It's inexpensive and prints out beautiful color images.
