First responders from across the country were in Virginia Beach for a massive structural collapse training exercise hosted by the Virginia Beach Fire Department and Virginia Task Force 2. The annual School was held at the sprawling complex of crawl spaces and staged disaster zones representing different scenarios – things first responders have seen and experienced first-hand. This course gives urban search and rescue teams a chance to practice their skills. More than 160 people took part in the hands-on training lasting for 8 days with students coming from as far as San Francisco, California, Texas, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Delaware.

Just a few days after it had been made available to students, structural damage was detected and it has been away for maintenance whilst the insurance company searched for someone to blame for it's unairworthy state ever since.

Philipp ERDMANN Group Leader, HT Structural Biology Research Centre
At Human Technopole, the mission of the Structural Biology Centre is to gain a precise knowledge of the structure of macromolecules and macromolecular complexes, which is essential to understand how they function. To this aim, the Cryo-EM Facility is designed to efficiently combine Single-Particle Analysis (SPA), Electron Tomography (ET) and Correlative Light Electron Microscopy (CLEM) workflows to study in detail the structure of single macromolecules as well as whole cellular compartments.
During the Cryo-EM Symposium (29-30 Sep 2022), external world-leading scientists in the field of electron microscopy as well as members of the HT Structural Biology Centre presented their research. Together with experts from leading international research centres, they engaged in a stimulating discussion on the role of structural cellular biology in human health and disease.
Participants were able to tour the state-of-the-art Cryo-EM Facility currently set up on the Human Technopole campus.

U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Lucas Wagner, a structural mechanic and collateral duty quality assurance representative with Marine All-Weather Fighter Attack Squadron VMFA(AW) 242, stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, torques an expandable bolt on the outboard-leading-edge flap transmission of an F/A-18D Hornet aircraft during exercise Red Flag-Alaska 16-2 in Thunder Dome hangar at Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska, June 7, 2016. The adjustments being performed on one of the squadron’s F/A-18D Hornet aircraft are part of inspections, also known as ‘phases.’ There are four phases an aircraft goes through: alpha, bravo, charlie and delta. They are performed after 200 hours of flight time and include more in-depth inspections called non-destructive inspections. During the inspections, the Marines confirm the metal hasn’t deteriorated and there’s no bonding, breaks, tears and breakage. The phases can be very time-consuming and difficult to do but are very important to ensure the pilots fly safely.

QUT Structural Engineering 2
Design was for a lightweight 0.9m column to carry a load of 110kN (11 tonnes). The column was to be made from G250 steel sheets with a yield stress/strength of 310MPa. The maximum number of plate elements was 15.
Of the 6 columns short-listed for testing (out of approx. 40 designs), 4 columns were actually tested, all of which failed above 120kN.

ca. 1942 photo, when the factory was still in operation. The 2-story section with wood frame structural system was built in 1923 for the Brilliant Silk Hosiery Company, followed by the 4-story section, which has a concrete structural system. Brilliant Silk merged with two other companies in 1929 to become Interstate Hosiery Mills, Inc. The plant made full-fashioned silk hosiery, until ca. 1942. Some time after then it was occupied by a division of the Annin Flag Company, based in Verona, NJ.
