The Great Grey Owl or Lapland Owl (Strix nebulosa) is a very large owl, distributed across the Northern Hemisphere.

Adults have a big, rounded head with a grey face and yellow eyes with darker circles around them. The underparts are light with dark streaks; the upper parts are grey with pale bars. This owl does not have ear tufts and has the largest "facial disc" of any raptor.

My parents were lucky enough to witness a Great Gray Owl last week, right in their front yard! Sure enough, it didn't take long before birders from all over the state came to appreciate the visiter from the north.

*There seems to be a lot of controversy about the mice feeding (my parents were not part of it). Any thoughts on this?

Juvenile Barred Owl (Strix varia) taken near Molalla, OR. I found this young bird, along with its parents while doing Spotted Owl surveys in the area. Unlike the other Barred in my photostream, that nested in city park, these birds truly are displacing Spotteds. Note the shaggy, short belly "bars." It seems these must be slower in coming in than other first-year plumage.

Barred Owl. Clarke Co., GA.

Walked out the door this morning to see a nice barred owl fly up and perch right near my apartment. I was able to grab my camera and snap a few shots.
