My parents were lucky enough to witness a Great Gray Owl last week, right in their front yard! Sure enough, it didn't take long before birders from all over the state came to appreciate the visiter from the north.
*There seems to be a lot of controversy about the mice feeding (my parents were not part of it). Any thoughts on this?

Juvenile Barred Owl (Strix varia) taken near Molalla, OR. I found this young bird, along with its parents while doing Spotted Owl surveys in the area. Unlike the other Barred in my photostream, that nested in city park, these birds truly are displacing Spotteds. Note the shaggy, short belly "bars." It seems these must be slower in coming in than other first-year plumage.

Walked out the door this morning to see a nice barred owl fly up and perch right near my apartment. I was able to grab my camera and snap a few shots.
