Early this morning I was helping with some bird surveys and has just gotten to this site in Northern Baltimore. I saw something in the distance with huge wings fly into a tree, so I went to check it out. Suddenly this barred owl (Strix varia) was ~20 feet away from me, on the ground, with his/her back to me! I crouched and waited for the owl to turn his/her head....and voila! Within 5 seconds of this shot, he/she took off. I can't believe I was able to get so close to this guy!! :)
