This barred owl is the first surprise of the morning and hung around long enough for several shots.

This is why I love paddling.

Shown here is the juvenile. The parants were at the tree top which was too high to have good angle.

I visited the same spot next day, all parants and chick were not there anymore.

Father owl, eye injury improving?

Pellet found under juvenile owl appears to match part of a bird found on the other side of the park. Did the adult feed the juvenile only part of the bird?

Great Grey Owl. From the Blue Mountains of Northeast Oregon. By Blake Matheson.

Small collage in frame.

Early this morning I was helping with some bird surveys and has just gotten to this site in Northern Baltimore. I saw something in the distance with huge wings fly into a tree, so I went to check it out. Suddenly this barred owl (Strix varia) was ~20 feet away from me, on the ground, with his/her back to me! I crouched and waited for the owl to turn his/her head....and voila! Within 5 seconds of this shot, he/she took off. I can't believe I was able to get so close to this guy!! :)
