Although I wish this was a Stradavarius, it isn't. In fact it cost me the princely sum of 29 of my finest UK pounds from Netto. Why I bought it I do not know - I can't play the thing, but how hard can it be! I'll keep you updated. If I can't figure it out, at least it makes an interesting photo subject.
Here's an interesting fact for you ...
It was reported in late March 2001 that Joseph Nagyvary, a biochemist at Texas A&M University, succeeded in making a violin somewhere near the quality of a Stradivarius by leaving the wood in sea water for a period of time. Due to lack of land space in Venice, in former times, imported wood was often stored in water in the Venice Lagoon, where a type of rotting affected it slightly. He managed to get hold of some wood shavings from a Stradivarius violin, and under a microscope he found that in that wood the natural filter plates in the pores between the tracheids had disappeared. He also, reportedly, treated the wood with borax.
By late 2003, Nagyvary had refined his techniques and produced a violin that was tested in a duel between it and a top-tier Stradivarius. Both violins were played in each of four selections of music. World-class violinist Dalibor Karvay performed behind a screen to an audience of 600 (including 160 trained musicians and 303 regular concert attendees). This was the first public comparison of a great Stradivari with a new violin in front of a large audience. The audience cast ballots for the violins' tone qualities and projection. The results indicated that Nagyvary's instrument surpassed the Stradivarius by a small margin in each category.
"The ever-popular Friday Lunch Hour Concert Series returns to the University of Adelaide in August.
The second series for 2007 starts on Friday 3 August with a very special concert of chamber music. Led by Terence Tam, Concertmaster of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, the program features the beautiful Horn Quintet K407 by Mozart and a new work by Philip Hall which was composed especially to complement the quintet.
Once again, the Lunch Hour Concerts feature a diverse range of music performed by staff and students from the University of Adelaide's <a href="http://www.music.adelaide.edu.au/"Elder Conservatorium of Music, and a range of exciting new artists.
The Benaud Trio, named after the famous Australian cricketer, has established a fine reputation and will perform the magnificent Piano Trio No.1 by Brahms in September. The TinAlley String Quartet will also visit from Melbourne later in the same month.
Marija Bajalica, a Yugoslav-born pianist now resident in Adelaide, will give her first solo recital for the concert series in early November, and organist Christopher Wrench will visit from Brisbane to perform on Elder Hall's stunning Casavant Frères organ.
The concerts will be held every Friday from 3 August until 16 November in Elder Hall from 1.10-2.00pm. Admission is only $6 and tickets are available at the door from 12.30pm on the day of each concert.
If you want to reserve a seat, a Gold Pass is also available for just $75. For more information contact the Concert Office on (08) 8303 5925.

My sister is opening another music school and I've promised to take some violin pictures to be hanged on the wall. Hopefully this set of pictures is good enough. :)
To many people, Music City is just about country music, but our town has a rich and diverse musical heritage that continues to grow. The Music City Youth Orchestra is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing a dynamic atmosphere for student musicians in Middle Tennessee to explore a diverse repertoire for string orchestra. This past weekend, I had an opportunity to visit them during a rehersal and take pictures of each musician. To learn more about this fantastic organization, see their website:
