To many people, Music City is just about country music, but our town has a rich and diverse musical heritage that continues to grow. The Music City Youth Orchestra is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing a dynamic atmosphere for student musicians in Middle Tennessee to explore a diverse repertoire for string orchestra. This past weekend, I had an opportunity to visit them during a rehersal and take pictures of each musician. To learn more about this fantastic organization, see their website:

Teaching myself to use Gimp, I fiddled (pun) with this image of a banjo player from the gem and mineral show a few months back. Constructive criticism, please :)

My fingers feel to me like little pedals to that are pushed on to the strings when the music calls for it.

Today's Daily Shoot was

Make a photograph with a triangular composition.

I was seeing bunches of triangles in my guitar headstock with this composition, so decided to go for it (of course, your interpretation of "triangle" may vary ;-) ).

Processed in Lightroom.

Strobist: Vivitar 285HV, full power, shoot-through umbrella, camera left; gold tinted reflector to the right for fill on the tuning-machine posts; my lens was poking through a piece of aluminum foil that reflected some of the light from the umbrella and helped provide more definition of the tuning-machine knobs.

missing a string, hanging on the wall

My first guitar lesson of the year is tonight, and I haven't practiced in several days. I'd better get to it....

Strobist:

Canon 430EX, camera right, slightly behind guitar, 1/16th power. Flash is flagged, with a reflector (white paper) taped to it to provide more separation on the right side.

Vivitar 285HV, on axis, slightly above, 1/4 power, through shoot-through umbrella.

The first group of Portuguese immigrants to Hawaii invented the ukulele after they arrived in August 1879 via the SS Ravenscrag. That ship included cabinet makers from Madeira Island, who brought the Medeiran machete. In their new country, ukulele inventors Manuel Nunes, José do Espírito Santo, and Augusto Dias developed the ukulele, and the Hawaiians adopted it (ukulele means "jumping flea" in Hawaiian).

George E. K. Awai and his Royal Hawaiian Quartet popularized the small, guitar-like instrument when they performed at the Panama Pacific International Exposition at San Francisco in 1915. From then on to the early 1920s, the ukulele became popular on the mainland United States.
