Chiba Tsuneshige (千葉常重) was a rough and tumble Kantō warrior who was actually born a member of the famous Taira clan and went by the name of Taira Tsuneshige (平常重). That was before he moved to Chiba in 1126, built himself a fortified residence and proclaimed himself ruler of the area and then changed his surname to Chiba. It was one of Tsuneshige’s sons, Tsunetane (千葉常胤), that helped Minamoto Yoritomo defeat the Taira clan and establish the Kamakura shogunate. The Chiba clan’s prestige rose as a result of this relation to the Minamoto and the shogunate and Tsunetane began to expand the defenses of Inohana castle, which is now know as Chiba Castle. The Chiba clan remained in power and held this castle until 1455, when internal strife brought both the power of the clan and the castle down.
