Having left Denver earlier in the day, Santa Fe 191 paused at Rio Grande's Colorado Springs depot on its run south to La Junta. The pint sized train consists of E8Am 81 (a regular staple of the run in the late 1960s), Baggage 3939 and a 28xx series Coach. Of note is 3939. The trucks the car is riding on are unique among Santa Fe passenger equipment. It was the only car in the fleet equipped with LFM/Rockwell lightweight trucks. Being a one-off, Santa Fe must not have been impressed enough to convert other cars. That said, they must have been satisfactory enough as the car rode on them for about five years. They would not be replaced until 1973/1974, by which time the car was in Amtrak ownership.

Train of the Day

1/13/24

On the morning of March 21st, a report was posted on the Train Tracker Victoria FB group about a Melbourne-bound grain train on the North East Line of great interest. Having already been on-location for the morning ST24 to Sydney, a quick hike across the Moonee Ponds Creek to the west side of the valley was all that was needed to be done in preparation for the grain train.

The low howl of engaged dynamic brakes echo across the valley and Gowanbrae as 3CM4 crosses over the Moonee Ponds Creek Viaduct at 09:51. Heavy overcast clouds loom over to the east, providing much needed soft light preventing what would’ve been a heavily sidelit photo. Having originated in Coolamon, NSW, three of Southern Shorthaul Railroad’s famed ‘Streamliners’, CLP12 “Casper”, CLF3 “Space Ghost”, and S311 power the loaded 36 car grain train down the line towards Appleton Dock in the heart of Melbourne.

Despite having a locomotive design that many consider to be of a bygone era, the two ghostly-looking lead CL’s were built in the 1970’s for the Commonwealth Railways. The nicknames of the two reflect their simple appearance. The trailing S311 is of 1960 Victorian Railways heritage, sporting Chicago Freight Car Leasing Australia colors with SSR patches, also sharing similar streamlining as the CLs ahead of it. Australia is one of the few places in the world where locomotives like these remain in revenue freight service, many units well over 60 years old.

The Union Pacific's Third Subdivision of the Nebraska Division connected the Omaha-Cheyenne mainline at Julesburg, Colorado, with the Denver-Cheyenne mainlilne at LaSalle, Colorado. BN had trackage rights on it from Sterling to Union, around 13 miles. Then our trains would split off from the EwePee at Union to make a trip to Brush, 11.4 miles and on the Chicago-Denver mainline. All this to avoid cluttering the former C&S along the Front Range with our nasty coal trains. And here's one of them, a westbound Houston coal with "UFIX" hoppers passing @1413 on U.P. trackage rights behind three C30-7, two SD40-2. For the EwePee, the Third Sub was a moderatwly busy route, protected by ABS and with 60mph speeds to keep the hot stuff rolling (probably mostly to and from the Rio Grande in Denver.) On. my drives between Alliance and Denver, I often would forsake the super-slab of Interstate 76 for the more interesting route of US138, just to absorb the small town High Plains of northeastern Colorado with its ranches, sugar beets, and other qualities that would be ignored by the tourists as they hurried to and from the ski resorts or mountain parks.

The Third Sub is no longer a through route; stubs have remained at either end and the Sterling-Union portion remains - much to my surprise. I suppose that the folks in Omaha rake in some nice payments from BNSF, enough to make it worthwhile to keep it and maintain it. When I ran coal trains like this one to Sterling, it was a privilege to see the switch already lined in front of the ornate brick depot, meaning I could proceed down the Third Sub "Route of the Streamliners" (the "City of Denver" actually) just a few hundred feet to the waiting crew who would take it on to Denver.

Saw this hotel in Daytona Beach and thought it was really striking. Afterwards, I looked it up and discovered that it’s been thoroughly renovated and that it is the place where NASCAR was created. Three variations of liveries carried in NSW by the 421 and 42 class locomotives represent at the Goulburn Streamliners event at Goulburn on 1-10-22. 42105 has been recently preserved into the Northern Rivers Railroad scheme which it wore from the mid 1990's and into its QR National days before being stored in 2014

B61 and all of it's comrades bask in the glory of the fireworks of the first day of celebrations at Streamliners. I have some more photos coming, but they are buried on my phone for the time being.

The weather was pretty gloomy for the first day of Streamliners 2016 at Goulburn - the weather perked up for the rest of the weekend, but I don't know why I didn't go back to this vantage point for another shot. Too busy gas-bagging probably.
