A line up of Streamlined locomotives pose in the afternoon sun at Goulburn Roundhouse for a swam of Rail Photographers.

The Southern 6900 (E8A) sits on the turntable during the Streamliners Event at the NCTM in Spencer, NC.

Having experienced better days in passenger service, C&NW 1584 is now relegated to branchline service. A semaphore in the vertical position does little to speed the progress on a line plagued with slow orders and an (as yet unknown) impending death sentence. (A Wisconsin spring with a lack of good skies have kept this GP7 out of the limelight for now. Lawn chairs are a combination of brass rod and 1/8" ribbon).

The future of racing looks a lot like the past. This monocoque body houses a gasoline engine, which in turn powers an electric generator which powers the floating wheels. A series of magnetic pulses force the wheel rings to turn. The result is a modern, smooth racing experience with an aesthetic that hearkens back to the early days of auto racing.

CNW 411 meets CB&Q 9911-A at Johnson siding East of Union, IL.

On December 1/12/2025, 4152s (loaded Aurizon grain ex Bowmans) is seen approaching Old Dublin road, Mallala (SA) with CLF5-alf19 in charge.

As the sun sets behind the Lake Mountains, Rio Grande Zephyr train No. 17 sails through Ironton, Utah on May 15, 1976. In less than five minutes, the classic streamliner will make its regular station stop in Provo.

Streamliners 2022 held at the Goulburn Rail Heritage Centre saw a range of Clyde EMD and Australian Streamlined locomotives brought together to showcase Australia’s older and more rarer diesel locomotives. 4464, 961, 42105, 4201, 4204, S311, GM19, GM10, S303, P22 & T357 are all seen in shot showing off there different liveries, sounds and horns

On the morning of March 21st, a report was posted on the Train Tracker Victoria FB group about a Melbourne-bound grain train on the North East Line of great interest. Having already been on-location for the morning ST24 to Sydney, a quick hike across the Moonee Ponds Creek to the west side of the valley was all that was needed to be done in preparation for the grain train.

The low howl of engaged dynamic brakes echo across the valley and Gowanbrae as 3CM4 crosses over the Moonee Ponds Creek Viaduct at 09:51. Heavy overcast clouds loom over to the east, providing much needed soft light preventing what would’ve been a heavily sidelit photo. Having originated in Coolamon, NSW, three of Southern Shorthaul Railroad’s famed ‘Streamliners’, CLP12 “Casper”, CLF3 “Space Ghost”, and S311 power the loaded 36 car grain train down the line towards Appleton Dock in the heart of Melbourne.

Despite having a locomotive design that many consider to be of a bygone era, the two ghostly-looking lead CL’s were built in the 1970’s for the Commonwealth Railways. The nicknames of the two reflect their simple appearance. The trailing S311 is of 1960 Victorian Railways heritage, sporting Chicago Freight Car Leasing Australia colors with SSR patches, also sharing similar streamlining as the CLs ahead of it. Australia is one of the few places in the world where locomotives like these remain in revenue freight service, many units well over 60 years old.

Having left Denver earlier in the day, Santa Fe 191 paused at Rio Grande's Colorado Springs depot on its run south to La Junta. The pint sized train consists of E8Am 81 (a regular staple of the run in the late 1960s), Baggage 3939 and a 28xx series Coach. Of note is 3939. The trucks the car is riding on are unique among Santa Fe passenger equipment. It was the only car in the fleet equipped with LFM/Rockwell lightweight trucks. Being a one-off, Santa Fe must not have been impressed enough to convert other cars. That said, they must have been satisfactory enough as the car rode on them for about five years. They would not be replaced until 1973/1974, by which time the car was in Amtrak ownership.

Train of the Day

1/13/24

Saw this hotel in Daytona Beach and thought it was really striking. Afterwards, I looked it up and discovered that it’s been thoroughly renovated and that it is the place where NASCAR was created. Nice to see old places taken care of. Graflex RB Super D, Agfa APX-100 (expired) shot at EI 50, Rodinal 1:50.

Since Aurizon’s take over of the One Rail Australia business, it’s become increasingly uncommon to see two CLF/CLP class locomotives paired up without other motive power outside of local transfers and intrastate grain traffic, so seeing two CL’s on an Intermodal service was a welcomed change as CLP16/CLF6 run Aurizon’s 6MX1 from North Dynon to Spencer Jct via Port Pirie through the locality of Calomba on Saturday the 21st of December 2024.

After arrival in Port Pirie, this train will shunt to enable fellow Aurizon Intermodal service 6SP1 to arrive and add the In-Line Fuelling wagon, the Crew Car and the loading for the journey West to Forrestfield. The Streamliners and a sole flat wagon containing ILF tanks will then run to Spencer Jct and stable to form 4114S back to Adelaide with 7PS1’s loading on Monday.

Hired power from Railfirst Asset Management dominates this train on most services however reliability issues with the GL and CM classes has seen Aurizon’s locomotives featured more regularly in the month since I photographed this service last. It’s expected that further orders of ACD class units due to arrive during 2025 will enable the two GL class locomotives to be dehired while the CM’s will remain, further Aurizon locomotives from the Eastern Bulk business unit are rumoured to arrive during the new year for traffic such as MX/XM services.

Veteren 1Rail locomotives CLP17/ALF24 rumble through Chidda, in suburban Adelaide, with 1451S grain train.

E9 9920 and BN3 were in storage at the then-bustling West Burlington Shops in 1995. The 9920 was supposed to become BN4 in the Executive Fleet, but the upcoming merger with the Santa Fe put that project on hold. The new BNSF Railway soon closed the shops making West Burlington a ghost-town.

In addition, BNSF management decided to not use the classic motors for their business train and operates any passenger specials with everyday freight motors.

BN3 was donated to the Illinois Railway Museum and today operates in that same paint scheme, which is fading, but plans are in the works for a repaint sometime in the future.

The 9920 was donated to the town of Keller, Texas and was repainted into a ridiculous version of Burlington silver with BNSF logos and looks just sad.

At least it was "preserved".

METX F7A 308 and the Nebraska Zephyr wait in Johnson Siding as the Coach Train, powered by recently restored BN E9AM 9976 leading SLRG E9B 102 & E8A 515. BN 9976 was quite the surprise as it hasn't ran since 2014, well over a decade

N&W 611 takes center stage as the gathered diesels sit in her shadow at Spencer.

EMD 3000hp streamliner, CLP13 adorned in the beautiful AN Passenger paint scheme, brings 6384 from Port Pirie into the loop at Two Wells late on a summers evening in February 1996. This train with its mixed bag of rolling stock was a Friday regular at the time, in this case, louvered vans, acid tanks, open gondolas and containers form part of the load.

An incredible car in an incredible place.

On Sunday 23/4/2023, AK82 (ARTC track inspection train) is seen approaching East Terrace, Callington (SA) with vintage SSR locomotives GM10-GM22 in charge.

GM10 still carries its 70th birthday headboard from June the previous year.

On the same day as Streamliners in Spencer I hosted my own gathering of streamlined locos on my garden railroad.
