Beautiful stratification of high, thin clouds above the Nutzotin Mountains near Beaver Creek, Yukon the other night. Even when there are no visible clouds, the relative calm or turbulence of the layers of air pressing down on us are a factor to consider. I really noticed this back when I was obsessively doing a lot of telescopic astronomical observing.... Regardless of the apparent clarity of the firmament, the sea of air overhead can be either calm or rough and this is the major factor influencing the visual stability of the images of planets and distant suns seen thru the scope. I used to notice that the astronomical "seeing" was often better during periods of high thin clouds such as this, than it was during times of absolute clear sky.

A lovely picture which in many ways typifies the country byway of the post nationalised railways of the 1950s. An unidentified 43xx class 2-6-0 runs through the Cardiganshire hinterland near Strata Florida hauling a 'down ' Carmarthen to Aberystwyth service on the 27 June 1958 The train is made up of a mixture of coaches which include a Collett Corridor Composite, a Hawksworth Brake Composite and a BR Composite Corridor also on tow are two, three plank dropside wagons and a Corn Flat which is partially hidden by the trees

Just imagine for a moment the countless trillions of shells that must have been laid down in layers to form the chalk strata of this imposing headland...
This pano shot is taken from a similar location to the last one showing the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge. The chalk boulders you can see in the forground of the other oneare visible here at the end of this chalk headland. And, although the rope bridge itself is hidden behind the headland, the island is still visible - as are those intrepid souls who braved the swinging rope bridge and who are now exploring the top of the island.
Feel free to zoom in and explore the detail of the strata on the chalk headland - and see how many people you can count on the island itself!

Aerial photo. Strong shadows ooze and drip over the canyon walls. Somewhere over Arizona (?). Description of what some of these geologic layers might be: www.arizonaruins.com/sedona/sedona_geology.html.
Taken on the western side of Jeju Island, South Korea. I like to call this the Antelope Canyon of Korea. Not quite as dramatic and colorful as that famous place of course, but the area has some outstanding rock formations and textures.
The light was a bit flat here as the day was overcast. I plan to visit again and see what the area is like from sunrise to about 10 am or so as it faces southeast which might make for some interesting colors and light.
