The village of Roussillon is noted for its red dirt. Many of the village centre storefronts are of this same color. At the edge of the village, is a cliff face, showing this marvelous color. I will be posting a photograph of that cliff in the next few weeks, when I find it, among all my others.

Also, please note, all my patient flickr friends, that I am still going through page two of my contacts, but many of you have been so very prolific with wonderful photographs, I don't want to miss a one, so it is taking me much longer to "catch up" than I originally thought.

Lastly, I see there is something floating around about flickr censorship. I have been out of the loop for 3 weeks now, and don't understand what is happening, yet.

With many people planning on viewing the total solar eclipse today, we are highlighting Eclipse Records - Tapes which was in Paterson, New Jersey. Sadly it did not stay in business long enough to witness the Great North American Eclipse of 2024, but we did find out that on January 24, 1925, Paterson was in the path of totality for a solar eclipse. The total eclipse lasted for 2 hours, 30 minutes and at 9:10 a.m. was at its peak when the moon completely covered the sun.

Let us know if you remember this vinyl record store which if it was still open may be playing “Total Eclipse of the Heart” by Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler.

Storefront with faded Christmas paper in the windows. See earlier image in my photostream where the paper had just been put up. Easton, PA - Canon EOS 7D.

Nice vintage storefront on this store on far north Clark. Photo from a day in 2010 I biked all of Clark Ave. south. I think it's still there.

In the past decade, we have noticed quite a number of shoe repair shops in New York City have closed. We wondered if it was mostly due to high rent increases, but a few shoemakers have told us “that business has declined because many people now purchase cheap “throw away” shoes made of plastic and don’t need or want to spend money on repairing them as they can just buy a new pair.”

Bucking the trend to lament small independent businesses New York City has lost in 2015, we are instead highlighting 10 of the many businesses in the 5 boroughs that are still enduring.

We celebrate these and over 200 more mom-and-pop shops in our newly released book STORE FRONT II: A History Preserved. Each business is carefully documented photographically and most include interviews with the owners.

“We hope that our project acts as an artistic intervention to help draw attention to and preserve the small shops whose existence is essential to the unique and colorful atmosphere of the city’s streets.”

A rural town of 1,700 located 50 km east of Brandon, Manitoba's second largest city. I shall add more about Carberry later because I have a number of buildings to post.

New York City mayor Bill de Blasio announced this past Wednesday his support for a tax on vacant storefronts. He called the vacant #storefront “a blight on neighborhoods.” We couldn’t agree more as many landlords choose to let their storefronts sit empty for months and sometimes years rather than rent them at a lower rate. We are not sure if this legislation will pass but we believe it is definitely a good start in helping preserve the fabric of our neighborhoods. Let us know what you think!

Katy's Candy Store in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. Katy's was founded in 1969 by Katy Keyzer. When we photographed this candy 🍭 shop in 2004 for our book, "Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York" we interviewed Katy and she told us that she, "has been through the dope, crack, and everything else this neighborhood has thrown at me. I speak three languages, English, Spanish and Motherfucker. You've got to be tough to survive around here." Sadly Katy was forced to close her business in 2007 when the landlord raised her rent very high in order to ged rid of her and convert the building into a luxury condo. To this day, the #storefront remains empty, which saddens us deeply.

Waverly Restaurant is one of our favorite diners to visit in Greenwich Village as we absolutely love its gorgeous neon signage and its delicious food including classic diner options as well as some Greek specialties. This old-school diner on the corner of Waverly Place and 6th Ave was founded in 1979 by Nick Serafis and is now run by the 2nd-generation family members including his daughter, Angela. Let us know if you have visited this gem.

Wishing everyone the best for 2018!

Love Saves The Day aka LSD on Second Avenue at the corner of East 7th Street was founded by Leslie & Richard Herson in 1966. When we photographed this kitsch-filled vintage shop in 2001 for our book “Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York” we also interviewed Richard who told us that the store was “an institution and many of my customers who don’t live in the neighborhood anymore still come back because I carry very unique items.” The shop also became well known as it was featured in the movie “Desperately Seeking Susan”, starring Madonna who traded a vintage jacket off her back for a pair of boots she saw in the window. Sadly, Love Saves the Day closed its NYC location in 2009 after its rent was raised from $5,000 to $15,000 a month but still maintains a shop in New Hope, PA.
