Kingston Lounge in Brooklyn was a small jazz club which opened in 1944. During its heyday many musicians including Max Roach, Kenny Dorham, Randy Weston and Matthew Gee played there. The Swingers (Dorham, Gee, Cecile Payne & company) recorded a 1960 album in which the 2nd track is called “Kingston Lounge” in honor of the club where they had spent so many hours in.
We loved its neon wraparound signage and the black and red “Vitrolite” (pigmented structural glass) on its facade. Vitrolite was widely used in the first half of the 20th century on Art Deco and Streamline Moderne buildings. Unlike masonry, pigmented structural glass does not craze, swell or warp and is highly burn and stain resistant and is colorfast.

Olden Camera in Manhattan was founded in 1947 by brothers Kurt and Wigo Olden. This camera store specialized in hard-to-find #film cameras and supplies. We loved visiting this store and were especially fond of ifs oversize #neonsign. In 1970 Olden Camera arranged to sell the very last Stereo Realist cameras f2.8 that used standard 135 film. They continued selling these cameras under their own name for six years making them the last place one could purchase these odd cameras. We can't remember exactly when this shop near Macy's and Herald Square closed but our 35mm photo of the entire #storefront with this amazing #neon was taken in 2004 and appears in our book "Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York". We definitely wish we could have somehow saved and displayed this gorgeous neon sign! Please let us know if you remember this store and what you purchased there and if you know what happened to that huge neon #camera!

My wife and I have been wondering when the 12th Street section of Brookland will become a hotbed for new store...This could be really cool fixer upper.

Roslyn is an old mining town in Washington State featuring a quaint downtown with rustic buildings. One might even conclude that the business owners agreed not to paint their buildings, which contributes to their charm I guess.
This old-school #hardware store has been in business since 1939. Seymour Shepetin's brothers, who were all electricians, ran the shop until they all passed away while serving in World War II, leaving Seymour the business. We couldn't think of a more patriotic store 🇺🇸than this. Photo from 2013 appears in our book, "Store Front II-A History Preserved." #type #typevstime #storefront #typography #everything_signage #signgeeks #ig_signage #signcollective #dailytype
WEEK 48 – Tupelo TriMax Triple Set (III)
With our interior tour all wrapped up now, stepping back outside we find ourselves taking this close-up look at the store’s façade. I can’t quite decide how I feel about the lighter brown color used for the support poles and bases of those columns (seems like the color at the top border, with the decorative element that runs throughout this shopping center, is of a darker shade of brown, one that I prefer over the lighter shade), but I do definitely like the white color used for the rest of the storefront here! Those shiny red OfficeMax letters look really nice set against the white paint, too :) I’m thinking those letters had to have been replaced not all that awful long before my visit, based on the sheer fact that a lot of times you’ll see a handful of letters really faded and others looking brand-new. So yes, it’s likely that this façade is a relatively new design for this store because of that. (Those three stripe elements on either side of the logo not being done up in a separate color also serves as indication that the façade has likely been redone at least once since the store’s opening date.)

These places are public so these photos are too, but just as I tell where they came from, I'd appreciate if you'd say who :)
Commercial Buildings, 251-261 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne, Australia. These old buildings are quite varied when you look at the upper floors, but the storefronts have all been modernized.
Le Petit Cafe on Spring Street in SoHo was established in 1990 as the neighborhood continued its transformation from a bohemian artist district into a trendy upscale boutique and chain shopping destination. The cafe was known for its all-day breakfast menu and its quirky decor but it closed by 2016. We miss the vibe of the pre-gentrified SoHo but still love walking around the neighborhood to admire its gorgeous collection of cast-iron architecture as it still remains the largest collection in the world. Let us know if you remember this cafe or any others which have sadly closed.

Smith’s Bar in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood near Times Square has been in business since 1954. Although this old Irish ☘️ pub which closed briefly in late 2014 before a new owner (actress Hayden Pannetire’s father) took over the former dive bar and renovated it, he thankfully kept and restored the original #neon signage.
This photo of the original #storefront was taken in 2004 and appears in our book “Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York”.

Circo’s Pastry Shop in Bushwick, Brooklyn has been in business since 1945. This Italian 🇮🇹 bakery has been using the same original family recipes brought over from Sicily by the current owner, Nino Pierdipino. When we interviewed the owner for our book “Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York” in 2004, he told us that not only is the storefront original but that they had to cover their vintage neon sign in mesh in the 1970s because its neon tubes were constantly being broken by kids in the neighborhood throwing rocks and bottles at it. Thankfully, in 2016 they removed the mesh covering the neon and restored the sign to its former glory. Their most popular item is their Cannoli a la Siciliana, which we can say firsthand is absolutely delicious!

Sadly, we just heard from the owner, Moishe Perl that yesterday was its last day as the the entire building has been sold.
This Jewish Bakery specializes in homemade challah bread, rugelach and hamantaschen made with a shortbread-like dough and filled with a creamy chocolate filling or blueberry jam. We not only love their cookies but also their #fontastic sign with the clever use of the letter “B” to fit the word Kosher inside.
Please DM or email us at jandkphoto@att.net to order. This special price with shipping also applies to our previously announced 11x14 prints of Vesuvio Bakery, Zig Zag Records and Katy’s Candy Store. Ralph’s Discount City in TriBeCa. We chose this photo for the cover of our book “Store Front:The Disappearing Face of New York” for two reasons; 1. we absolutely loved the unique #font used for its #signage and 2. we had a personal attachment to this store which sold a wide variety of products (always stuffed into the blue shopping bag seen in the photo) and were saddened when it closed in 2007. The building this #storefront was located in was torn down to make way for a new luxury condo. #signgeeks #typography #type #typevstime #dailytype #signcollective #ig_signage #everything_signage #fontastic #lettering
Storefront, Two Men. © Copyright 2022 G Dan Mitchell.
Two men at a Manhattan storefront as a Columbus Day parade passes by.
Switching gears again today, this is another photograph from our October East Coast visit. The trip was primarily geared toward photographing autumn color in New England, but we managed to sped a couple of nights in Manhattan between that and our homeward flight. Our visit coincided with what New York still refers to as the “Columbus Day Parade,” though a more modern designation is apparently also something along the lines of Italian Heritage Day. (One bizarrely noteworthy moment was seeing Rudy Giuliani yucking it up at the front of one of the floats, but I digress…) We wandered around the periphery of the parade route, where the onlookers were in many cases more fascinating than the parade itself.
I made this photograph using one of my “blind shooting” techniques. There are lots of different thoughts about how street photographers should (or should not) interact with their subjects, and I think they all have some validity. Here I did not want the subjects to be distracted by me, so I held the camera in front of me as I walked by and made a couple of exposures without look directly at the two men. I think it paid off. I feel like there are a number of ways to try to make sense of what is going on here and what it might imply, but I’ll leave it to viewers to figure this out.

As 2017 winds down, what better way to countdown to 2018 than with an #analog clock. 🎉We love this liquor store's double channel #neon WINES 🍷#signage and its stainless clock.
