Awaiting overhaul by Colas, HST power car 43277, with East Midlands Railway branding, makes an unusual site at Arley, behind a GWR poster advertising the virtues of Criccieth in North Wales. I don't think anyone would describe the Llyn Peninsula as "Alpine" these days and the Alps aren't exactly coastal!
The Map storage room is being emptied and all the maps are being scanned to digital format.
The foundation stone for colonial architect James Barnet’s largest building was laid in 1876 by the Minister of Lands. Once completed, this lavish interpretation of the Italian Renaissance style easily dominated the Bridge Street and Circular Quay area. The design of the building incorporated early examples of emerging technologies, such as heating, lighting, ventilation and a system of communication involving speaking through tubes and operating pneumatic bells. Builder John Young introduced one of Sydney’s first reinforced-concrete floor slabs, with concrete vaults to improve fire resistance.
The Lands Department building exhibits great workmanship in its masonry, particularly its statuary, including a statue of explorer Robert O’Hara Burke. The tower features a copper onion-shaped dome.
