GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN - This is a vintage piece from Scandinavia (or two pieces, rather) that our indefatigable intern Jasper painted for us. What was once run-of-the-mill has become anything but, with colors that really pop, but stay grounded enough (with the grey and blue) not to overwhelm a room. Also, super-practical storage!

Bowen Salt.
A magnificent sample of salt crystal from the Bowen salt woiks was exhibited lo Pressmen by Mr. C. Collins at Parliament House yesterday. Tho crystal, which was the size of a closed fist, was snow white in colour, and of very high quality.
The salt is obtained from the sea water at Bowen by evaporation process. Mr. Collins stated that to date this year the salt works of Bowen, on which £40,000 capital had been expended, had produced 1000 tons of salt, and should the weather keep fine, the management hoped to bag another 1000 tons by Christmas. As the action of the sun on the vats is an indispensible factor in divorcing tho salt from tho sea water, wet weather will, of course, put an end to operations.
The works have been operating two years, and last year produoed 500 tons

Storage of electricity is arousing fresh interest as a complement to intermittent generation and an alternative to costly grid expansion plans. Given the rapid increase in RES (mainly wind) generation and the obstacles to construction of new lines and even to an upgrading of the existing ones, TSOs and energy companies are looking for alternatives. Alternative solutions are:
1. Reinforcement of the networks
2. Greater flexibility of existing generators, e.g. CCGTs
3. Electricity storage via hydro systems (pumping stations)
4. Other techniques of electricity storage: compressed air and car-type batteries
5. Demand response (possibly accompanied by diffusion of electric vehicles)
Which alternative looks most promising?
Should the solution be left to market forces or are there regulatory choices to be made?

This is another WWII Japanese bomb storage bunker located at what was called AsLito airfield in Saipan. Bombs were stored here for the Japanese attack on Guam. After the Battle of Saipan bombs were stored here for the American attack on Japan.

I had a bunch of old Silicon Chip magazines sitting in a cardboard box and since I'm on a quest to rid my house of cardboard boxes (evil, horrible things) I decided I needed a magazine storage solution.
Sure, I could drive down to Officeworks (A megastore of stationary here in Australia) and simply pick one up off the shelf for a few dollars (Well, $15 for one this size). It would have been a no-brainer. But that just didn't seem sporting!
So last night I sat down in front of my computer and fired up CorelDRAW and designed this and today, armed with a sheet of 6mm MDF, I set my laser cutter to work. It's got enough room to fit a bunch of magazines and should I need more I can just cut them out! I figure it cost me about $6 for the MDF - less than half the cost of buying one :)

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) addresses carbon emissions that contribute to climate change, which has become an international challenge. One option for reducing greenhouse gas buildup in the atmosphere is storing it deep underground. Laboratory experiments confirm that carbon dioxide is effectively trapped when injected into basalt formations.
