On Tuesday, December 17, SAGE and BFC Partners officially opened Stonewall House, formally known as Ingersoll Senior Residences, New York's first LGBT-friendly affordable senior housing development.
The graves of soldiers from the Commonwealth of Virginia at Stonewall Cemetery, with the Virginia monument at far right and the Monument to the Unknown and Unrecorded Dead at rear. When the War Between the States began, there was no organized system on either side for armies to retrieve the bodies of their dead after a battle: Both sides simply moved on to their next tactical position, leaving the task of collecting fallen soldiers to individuals. As a result, the bodies of soldiers could remain on rural battlefields for years. Like many Confederate cemeteries, this one was established as the result of work taken on by a women's civic group, Ladies Association for the Fitting Up of Stonewall Jackson Cemetery, which organized efforts to collect the mortal remains of soldiers who were still on the battlefield where they had fallen.
