This statue of Stonewall Jackson was given to VMI in 1912 by sculptor, Sir Moses Ezekiel, Class of 1866, VMI’s first Jewish cadet and a veteran of the Battle of New Market. For more than 100-years this statue stood in front of the Jackson Arch on the Campus of V.M.I. Then in 2020 political correctness dictated that it be removed from the campus. Today it stands at the Virginia Civil War Museum and the Hall of Valor at the New Market Battlefield in New Market, Virginia.

Clarksburg, Harrison County, WV (Virginia at that time) is the birthplace of General Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson. After a brilliant Mexican War record, he joined the Confederacy in 1861, earned his nickname and advancement in rank in first Battle of Manassas, and was killed at Chancellorsville. In a house on a site less than a block from this location Thomas Jackson was born January 21, 1824. After his father died and mother became ill the young Jackson moved to his uncle's mill at about the age of 6.
