The monument to Confederate General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson at Mannasas, Virginia. It was here, during the First Battle of Bull Run, that the nickname "Stonewall" was given to Jackson by another general.

Stonewall Cemetery is located on part of a plot given as a burial site by General Lewis Lawrence Griffin, when he founded Griffin in 1840. Several hundred Confederates and one Union soldier, casualties of the Battle of Atlanta and Jonesboro, from the hospital at old Synodical College and the battlefields, are buried here.

The Stonewall Building, aka the American Life Building, was built in 1940 or 1926 depending on who you ask. It has been abandoned for around 30 years.

Loving the Christmas decorations this year at Stonewall Kitchen in York, Maine. They always have the best holiday displays! The reflection of the tree in the puddle caught my eye.

You'll see from the sign that this is the intersection of Stonewall Court and Cemetery Street, though you can only see the one street in this image. The actual intersection is behind me, a little Y-intersection with the actual street veering off to the right and a narrow alley veering off to the left. Cemetery Street runs at a weird angle in a town that's almost entirely a grid, so it tends to throw a lot of people off. People don't consider the alley an actual street, so everybody always runs that stop sign.

My grandparents' old house is just down the street over the little knoll. The cemetery where 90% of my relatives are buried is on the hill rising to the left of the chain link fence. I have old pictures that show there really was once a stone wall running along the road, but I just remember the fence. When my mother was growing up, this would have been Owensboro's edge, almost in the country. From this spot looking this direction, you can almost convince yourself it still is.

The little house where Stonewall Jackson breathed his last. His arm is buried nearby. This is the Stonewall Jackson Shrine. Check out the photos of the bed and clock also.

This is an odd statue. Made in 1939, it perfectly captures the New Deal stylizations of an Every-Super-Man. But it's Stonewall Jackson who in real life was a scrawny kook.

Just look...His chest muscles burst through his uniform... His upper arms are larger around than the horse's rear leg and there is no pretense of having a uniforms over them. He's huge, ripped.

Hell, even Jackson's real-life horse "old sorrell" was famous for being a creaky swayback old mare.

Day 6. Stonewalls are a significant feature in many regions of England and Scotland. All with very different appearances... distinct vernacular. This will be much to do with available resources. That includes time. Just how much extra time is required to shape stones like this I cant be say. Maybe its faster to prepare them and then move to the site for building.. The Rosedale Abbey neighbourhood has some remarkable stone walls... miles of 'show-piece' walls like this. This happens to be a garden wall in the village but the outlying lanes and fields have walls that are equally well built and maintained. Not obvious from the image but they actually narrow consistently with increasing height by maybe 6 inches difference between the top and the base. This I imagine provides added stability.

29:07:15. Wednesday. Much brighter day than last few. Brightens up by late afternoon. Trip to Whitby today across the moors. Clearly see why the Tour de France enjoyed the area in 2014. A walk around Whitby, we detect the reminiscent melange of popcorn, fish and seagull cries and slot machine whipping up the narrow windy lanes from the quayside below. From memory dulls again by the evening. Cool enough. Hear of J's interview. Managed to namedrop a certain Captain Cook... apprenticed in Whitby... or so he says.

Plenty happening in the outside world but we are cocooned from it all in the middle of the moors.
