A beautifully composed scene from the harem section of Topkapı Palace, showing a stone-paved walkway running between two historic buildings. Through the narrow gap, a tall minaret rises against a vivid blue sky, creating a striking contrast between palace walls and the skyline beyond. A moment that captures both the intimacy of the harem’s architecture and the grandeur of Istanbul’s heritage.

We walk through the bush to the boat station which will take us to Turtle Island in the Mekong Delta. It was a pleasant and shaded walk with a tributary of the Mekong to our left and fruit orchards and fields to the right. Here we are on the stone walkway leading to the river. This is not a natural forest by any means but still, by way of information, the Mekong Delta is the region with the smallest forest area in Vietnam. 300,000 hectares (740,000 acres) or 7.7% of the total area are forested as of 2011. While visitors often come for hydrangeas, torii gates, and the city’s contrast with tradition, even the smallest surfaces here carry design intent and a quiet aesthetic. A reminder that in Tokyo, beauty can appear both above and below eye level.
