The cobblestone streets of Brussels hold the quiet charm of a city that breathes history. Every corner reveals a piece of the past, with buildings that have witnessed centuries of change but remain as pillars of tradition and culture. Walking through these streets is like stepping into a time where architecture speaks, and the ground tells stories of old markets, artists, and gatherings that shaped Belgian identity.

Brussels, known for its blend of French and Flemish influences, preserves this essence in its alleys and hidden squares. The glow of cobblestones after a rainy night or the soft sound of footsteps echoing at dusk creates a unique atmosphere – melancholic yet warm.

These streets are not just pathways; they are living memories intertwined with the present. In Brussels, even the smallest alleyway seems to whisper that the past is never as far away as it seems.

On a beautiful winter evening in the Columbia River gorge.

Thank you for enjoying the images of Tunisia. We have lingered here longer than I had planned. There are others in the album entitled, "Tunisia." At the end of the trip, I travelled to Sousse and then to Hammamet.

Hammamet is a smaller town on the Gulf of Hammamet and a popular resort town. Through out history, it was a desire place to conquer. First, it was a Roman colony, then it was ruled by the Spanish and the Turks. Rommel used it as a headquarters during World War II.

As a matter of fact, I saw many old pictures of World War II tanks as I explored Tunisa. This is the medina of the town. A small and manageable medina to walk though and enjoy. It was originally erected during the 15th Century.

During our day boat tour from Athens, we visited the beautiful island of Hydra and I had the time to wander around some of the streets.

This old stone roadway almost certainly dates back to the 19th century or earlier, when this south-western corner of Dartmoor near Shaugh Prior was a hive of industrial activity. There was a mineral railway with tunnels and mines, quarries and china clay workings. Remains of the old buildings are still visible, and the entrance to an old tin or copper mine is only about 20 yards away. The area is known as the Goodameavy Estate and is owned by the National Trust. A short distance from here the River Plym is joined by the River Meavy before flowing south towards the sea at Plymouth.

The Road goes ever on and on

Down from the door where it began.

Now far ahead the Road has gone,

And I must follow, if I can,

Pursuing it with eager feet,

Until it joins some larger way

Where many paths and errands meet.

And whither then? I cannot say.

The path ahead, both stone and moss,

Marks journeys made, and those yet crossed.

In this embrace of nature’s art,

I leave a piece of my own heart.

Welcome to the tranquil grounds of the D.T. Suzuki Museum in Kanazawa, Japan. This serene image captures the museum's contemplative walking path leading to a concrete doorway that opens up to a reflective water feature. The pathway, made of stone slabs set in gravel, guides visitors through a beautifully landscaped area. Lush greenery, including a tree with hanging branches and leaves, frames the scene, enhancing the sense of peace and introspection.

A visitor stands in the distance, either taking a photo or quietly observing the surroundings, adding a human element to the serene setting. The water feature at the end of the path mirrors the trees and sky, creating a harmonious blend of nature and architecture. This design encourages reflection and mindfulness, aligning perfectly with D.T. Suzuki's teachings on Zen and tranquility.

The use of concrete and stone in the architecture is a nod to minimalist design principles, creating clean lines and a stark contrast to the lush natural surroundings. The museum's layout promotes a sense of journey and discovery, inviting visitors to slow down and absorb the serene environment.

Whether you're exploring Zen philosophy or simply enjoying the peaceful ambiance, the D.T. Suzuki Museum offers a unique experience. The thoughtful design and natural elements come together to provide a space for quiet reflection and deeper connection with the principles of mindfulness.

Acho que fica bastante melhor no tamanho original... porque alguns detalhes são muito bonitos, na minha opinião.

I think this one looks much better in the original size, because there are some beautiful details, IMO.

Rikugien Gardens, located in Tokyo’s Bunkyō ward, is a breathtaking example of a traditional Japanese strolling garden, celebrated for its seasonal beauty and historical significance. Designed in the Edo period by feudal lord Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu, a close confidant of the fifth shogun Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, the garden was completed in 1702. Its name, “Rikugien,” translates to "Six Poems Garden," inspired by an ancient Japanese poetic classification system, and the garden features landscapes that bring classical poetry to life.

The design follows the kaiyu-shiki, or strolling garden style, with a central pond, winding pathways, meticulously pruned pine trees, and carefully placed rocks. Each element is crafted to embody the concept of “borrowed scenery,” integrating natural vistas with man-made beauty. The large central pond mirrors the lush greenery surrounding it, creating serene reflections that change with the seasons—from cherry blossoms in spring to fiery maples in autumn.

Rikugien offers numerous scenic viewpoints, including the iconic Togetsukyo Bridge, a stone formation that represents a mountain crossing. Visitors can enjoy various tea houses scattered along the pathways, where they can rest and admire the landscape while experiencing traditional Japanese tea culture. The garden is especially magical during autumn and at night illuminations in winter, which highlight the brilliant colors and tranquil atmosphere.

For visitors seeking a peaceful escape in Tokyo, Rikugien Gardens provides a glimpse into Japan’s refined landscape architecture and cultural heritage, evoking centuries of history and poetic beauty.

The evening sun lights the way through the arch and down the stone pathway…Another image left over from fall.

Rikugien Gardens stands as an oasis of tranquility amid the modern Tokyo skyline. Designed during the Edo period (1700s) under the patronage of Tokugawa shogun Tsunayoshi, this exquisite garden reflects the poetic spirit of its era. Its name, “Rikugien,” refers to the "six divisions of poetry," as it artfully recreates 88 scenic spots from classic waka poems. Surrounded by the urban energy of Tokyo, the garden offers a unique juxtaposition of lush greenery and contemporary architecture visible in the background.

The centerpiece of Rikugien is its expansive central pond, bordered by meticulously trimmed pines and ornamental stones. Meandering pathways guide visitors through verdant landscapes, unveiling hidden teahouses, serene bridges, and dramatic viewpoints of the garden’s natural and architectural elements. Notable features include the man-made hills, symbolizing Japan's mountainous terrain, and reflective ponds that mirror both the traditional garden and the striking modern skyline beyond.

This garden masterfully balances Edo-period principles of design—embracing asymmetry, subtlety, and seasonal change—with a timeless aesthetic that continues to inspire. Seasonal highlights include delicate cherry blossoms in spring and vibrant red maples in autumn, drawing locals and travelers alike.

Rikugien’s appeal is not just its beauty but also its ability to transport visitors into a historic moment while surrounded by the rhythm of a modern city. This dynamic blend of past and present makes it a must-visit for nature lovers, photographers, and history enthusiasts exploring Tokyo.

Tucked within the historic Higashi Chaya District of Kanazawa, the Ochaya Art Museum offers a glimpse into Japan’s refined teahouse culture. This beautifully preserved Edo-period structure exemplifies traditional chaya (teahouse) architecture, with its elegant wooden façade, delicate latticed windows, and muted earthy tones that have aged gracefully over centuries. Once a gathering place for geisha performances and elite entertainment, this building now serves as a cultural museum, inviting visitors to step back in time.

The ochaya (tea houses) of Kanazawa are distinct for their two-story design, a feature historically reserved for geisha establishments in Japan. The first floor, traditionally used for receptions and performances, showcases shoji (paper sliding doors), tatami flooring, and ambient lantern lighting that enhance its serene ambiance. The upper floor, veiled behind delicate bamboo blinds, was once an exclusive retreat for patrons indulging in refined conversations over sake and traditional music.

One of the museum’s standout details is its aged wooden exterior, which bears the subtle weathering of Kanazawa’s humid climate, adding to its authentic charm. The overhanging eaves and intricate roofwork display fine craftsmanship, offering a glimpse into the city's rich architectural heritage. The entrance, marked by a simple noren curtain, maintains a sense of mystery, reminiscent of a time when only the privileged were granted entry.

For those enchanted by Japan’s hidden gems, the Ochaya Art Museum is an essential stop—a living artifact of Kanazawa’s golden age, where history, architecture, and artistry intertwine seamlessly.

Standing beneath the ancient arch, I found myself gazing through centuries as the timeless cobblestone path led my eye towards the historic village and its central church tower. This scene, framed by history's embrace, was a seamless blend of the past and the present, where every stone and leaf seemed to whisper stories of yesteryear. As modern-day villagers walked the same path trod by generations before them, I captured this moment—a testament to the enduring spirit of the community and the timeless dialogue between architecture and nature.

A selfie on the walk to the boat station, courtesy another photo crazy lady! I thought I was the crazy guy who was photographing anything and everything I set my eyes on. Well, I have news for you- our group had an elderly Vietnamese lady settled in Vancouver, Canada, who was even worse than me. Only difference- I was using a Nikon D7200 and she was using a Canon Eos 7D. I have been traveling solo for a while now, so my pointing my camera at everything might have dissipated somewhat. But this lady was how I was about eight years ago. She was positively delighted when I offered to take a picture of her against a tree laden with jackfruit. She insisted on returning the favour, and so this is the result. This is me following my group into the jungle to the point where we board our paddle boat on one of the offshoot canals from the mighty Mekong River in Southern VIetnam. Thanks to our guide Guide Truong Guide Trường Tôn, short name Tony, for a lively and thoroughly enjoyable tour.(Mekong Delta, Vietnam, Nov. 2016)

This looks down on the needlfelted playmat. This is the largest one I've made to date. It was so fun to do. They are VERY excited about this one and immediately wanted to play with it when it was done.

Wandering through the remnants of history, I found myself in this narrow alleyway, sandwiched between the ancient walls of the castle. It's amazing how such simple structures can be so full of stories. As the light played hide and seek with the clouds, the mossy stones seemed to come alive, whispering secrets of the days they've witnessed.
