2) Το περίφημο αυτό “θεματικό” πάρκο τι ΘΕΜΑ έχει;

By chance I saw on a channel a tribute to "The Elf Mill".

Hearing the cheerful disposition of a “manager” to say that this year we expect to surpass last year's 1,200,000 visitors (!!!), I have some thoughts to share that I know will throw a few drops into the internet ocean:

1) Finally we are all numbered

2) What theme does this famous theme park have?

3) If it is Christmas anyway, it is obviously out of the question since nothing in this consumer kit patch has anything to do with Christ's coming into the world in extreme humility and poverty.

4) All dictatorships over the centuries have the unmistakable same method of controlling the masses

(and not of course conscious peoples) use: "bread and spectacles"

The story of the very important industrial heritage monument has been mentioned in a previous post

Northamptonshire used the be known as the "Country of Spires and Squires" but these days people associate it more closely with the Bridget Jones films. Grafton Underwood is a very pretty village with many listed buildings situated about three miles east of Kettering. The village is part of the Buccleuch Estate. Many of the houses, all of which are stone-built with some dating back to the 1600s, are owned by the estate and rented out. Many are listed buildings, including those pictured, which are Grade II-listed.

The beautiful 12th century church in Grafton Underwood features a memorial window to the several thousand American airmen who lost their lives while based at the nearby WWII airfield. Full details of the units based there and some of the actions they took part in can be seen at: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAF_Grafton_Underwood.

It's nice to see that the village has retained its traditional red telephone box, though this one has been converted to house a defibrillator rather than a payphone. Very few phone boxes now seem to have payphones and I've seen them converted to visitor centres, and cash-points as well as small libraries.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone!

(Apologies -- an early-winter hard freeze has thwarted my plans to take a current, local photo for the season ...)

A small flower bed and container plants along a wall in a nook just off the Petite rue, in the village of Noyers-sur-Serein (the Yonne département, Bourgogne / Burgundy, in eastern France), on a clear midday in mid-October (2016). They include different hydrangeas, pelargoniums, lobelia, and a trellised grape vine.

The structure in the center may be a disused well. In the window, a reflection of part of an ivy-covered building can be seen.

Noyers-sur-Serein, officially named Noyers, lies in the scenic valley of the river Serein and is designated as one of Les plus beaux villages de France (The Most Beautiful Villages of France). Its walled historic centre still follows a medieval pattern, with walls, towers, and gates, a longer main street, and small, sometimes winding side lanes, as well as multiple places (squares). Within it, there are numerous buildings, many half-timbered (à colombage) and others of stone; 78 of them are classified as Monuments historiques, and many date back to the 14th-16th centuries. Some of the wooden beams feature carvings in Renaissance style.

(Information partly from the official village website, last consulted 15 November 2020.)

Please note: When we visited Noyers-sur-Serein, Yonne was still described as being in the region of Bourgogne. Officially, since January 2016, it was in the newly merged administrative region Bourgogne-Franche-Comté.

Carbisdale Castle was built in 1907 for the Duchess of Sutherland on a hill across the Kyle of Sutherland from Invershin in the Scottish Highlands. From 1945 to 2011 it was used as a youth hostel, operated by the Scottish Youth Hostels Association. The castle is situated north of Culrain, and around 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) north-west of Bonar Bridge. It lies within the civil parish of Kincardine and Community council of Ardgay and District.

The castle is in the Scottish baronial style, it has 365 windows, is 41,433 square feet (3,849.3 m2) and is protected as a category B listed building. The hostel closed for repair in 2011, and was put up for sale in 2014. Until its closure, the castle had a large collection of art, with some pieces dating back to 1680, as well as Italian marble statues. It was purchased in 2016 but offered for sale again in 2021; in 2022 it was again sold and is now a private residence. As of June 2025 it is again on the market.

The castle was built between 1905 and 1917 for Mary Caroline, Duchess of Sutherland, the second wife of George Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, 3rd Duke of Sutherland, whom she married in 1889. She is better known as "Duchess Blair" because of her first marriage to Captain Arthur Kindersley Blair of the 71st Highland Light Infantry, who died in a hunting accident in 1883 near Pitlochry. The marriage was not well-liked in the Sutherland family. When the Duke died in 1892 his will, in favour of the Duchess, was contested by his son and heir Cromartie. In a court process that followed, the Duchess was found guilty of destroying documents and was imprisoned for six weeks in Holloway Prison.

Eventually, the Sutherland family came to an agreement giving Duchess Blair a substantial financial settlement. Furthermore, the family agreed to build a castle for the Duchess, as long as it was outside of the Sutherland lands. The Duchess employed a firm of Ayrshire builders and the castle was built between 1906 and 1917 just outside the Sutherland lands in Ross-shire. It was located on a hillside to be visible to a large part of Sutherland, especially the main road and rail line which the Sutherland family would have to use to travel south. Thus it became known as the "Castle of Spite" as it was widely considered that the Duchess located the castle there to spite her husband's family and the settlement agreement. The castle's tower only has clock faces on three of its four sides; the side facing Sutherland is blank, supposedly because the Duchess did not wish to give her former relatives the time of day.

Colonel Theodore Salvesen, a wealthy Scottish businessman of Norwegian extraction, bought the castle in 1933. He made it available as a refuge for King Haakon VII of Norway and Crown Prince Olav, who would later become King Olav V, during the Nazi occupation of Norway in World War II. During that time the castle was also used to hold important meetings; at the Carbisdale Conference on 22 June 1941 it was agreed that should Russian forces enter Norwegian territory, they would not stay there after the war. On 25 October 1944, the Red Army entered Norway and captured thirty towns, but the Russian forces later withdrew under the terms of the agreement. After the Colonel died his son, Captain Harold Salvesen, inherited the castle and gave its contents and estate to the Scottish Youth Hostels Association. Carbisdale Castle Youth Hostel opened to members on 2 June 1945.

Following frost damage, the hostel closed for repairs in February 2011. Further structural damage was discovered during repair work. Because of the cost of completing the repairs, the SYHA advertised the castle for sale in 2014, for £1.2 million. In addition they auctioned 17 marble sculptures and 36 paintings in May 2015, raising a further £1 million. In September 2016, the castle was purchased by FCFM Group Ltd, who planned to make it "a world-class private residence".

The castle was put up for sale again in April 2021, priced at £1.5 million. It was sold in October 2022 to the barrister Samantha Kane and has since undergone restoration. Kane, now known as Lady Carbisdale, uses the castle as her residence but intends to partially open it to the public. As of June 2025, it is again on the market, with a guide price of £3.5 million.

The castle is rumoured to be haunted by a ghost called Betty.

Constantine and Pavlos Paschalis from Kapesovo, born around 1770, were merchants operating in Russia, where they acquired a great fortune. Their donation was founded in 1861 by the Paschalion School in order to function as a village school.

It was the largest school in Zagori, which the Paschalis brothers provided with a very rich library. Her collections include one of the 13 copies of the Charter of Rigas Feraios, the political map of the democratic state that Rigas envisioned in his revolution. The Paschalion School operated until 1985. Today, the village's cultural association shaped its ground floor to represent the traditional Zagorian residence and gather there a number of tools used in Zagori for the last two centuries. Thus, the visitor offers a kind of museum for the folklore information of the visitor.

All that remains of Alnwick Abbey, the Gatehouse.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alnwick Abbey was founded as a Premonstratensian monastery in 1147 by Eustace fitz John near Alnwick, England, as a daughter house of Newhouse Abbey in Lincolnshire. It was dissolved in 1535, refounded in 1536 and finally suppressed in 1539. The Alnwick Abbey site is located just within Hulne Park, on the bank of the River Aln. The only visible remnant is the impressive 14th-century gatehouse, a Grade I listed building.

It is located at the northern terminus of the Cromford Canal, which opened in 1794 and ran 14.5 miles (23 km) from here to the Erewash Canal in Derbyshire. The wharf stands on Mill Lane opposite Richard Arkwright's Cromford Mill, and surviving buildings include two warehouses - one of which is now a cafe - an office or counting house, and two cottages. The wharf was once totally enclosed by a stone perimeter wall, which included other buildings, but these buildings have not survived.

The yard serves today as a car park.

The Canal Warehouse was built in 1794, soon after the canal opened, and is known as the Gothic Warehouse, after the design of the side elevation. (These Gothic castellations, just visible in the top picture, were probably included at the insistence of Sir Richard Arkwright, who would be able to see it from Willersley Castle, his intended home.) This warehouse was owned by Nathaniel Wheatcroft, a principal carrier on the canal. Today the Arkwright Society manages the Warehouse, having leased it since 1995, where two rooms are used as classrooms, and public exhibitions are sometimes held there. The Society offers tours of the Wharf and the canal.

A second warehouse was constructed in 1824, and was used to store goods awaiting carriage by boat, protected by the overhanging awning. Today a café and wildlife shop are open on the ground floor of this building.

Construction of the Counting House started in 1794.

The Wharf Cottages were built in 1796 for administrative staff.

The canal towpath, which starts at the Wharf, can be followed to High Peak Junction (the start of the High Peak Trail), and as far as Whatstandwell and Ambergate. This 6-mile (10 km) section is listed as a Biological Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), and also forms part of the Derwent Valley Heritage Way.

The tower and spire that crowns Glasgow Cathedral towers over the nave and has an amazing bulk due to the scaffolldling that covers it. Our earlier photos were taken from immediiately in front of this face of the church which obscured the spire adn scaffolding. What a surprise when we got futher away and could see how massive the cathedral is.

"Standing at the east end of Cathedral Street in Glasgow, and not far from where Castle Street becomes High Street is Glasgow Cathedral. One of the few Scottish medieval churches to have survived the Reformation unscathed, Glasgow Cathedral is truly magnificent, full of beauty and wonder." source Wikipedia 2025-09-01

This day was overloaded with wonderful sights, so our guide hurried us along and we did not enter the cathedral to explore its wonders. An elegant description and history can be found at www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/glasgow/cathedral/index.html

Dunbar Castle was one of the strongest fortresses in Scotland, situated in a prominent position overlooking the harbour of the town of Dunbar, in East Lothian. Several fortifications were built successively on the site, near the English-Scottish border. The last was slighted in 1567; it is a ruin today.

The Castle remained the stronghold of the Earls of Dunbar until the forfeiture of George, Earl of March, in 1457, when the Castle was dismantled to prevent its occupation by the English. It was restored by James IV later in the century. In April 1497 the "Hannis tower" was roofed and the master mason Walter Merlioun was completeing the gatehouse or "fore work". In 1501 new iron window grills or yetts were provided. The castle came under the control of the Duke of Albany and it was during this period that the bulwark to the west was built. It may have been designed by Antoine d'Arces, Sieur de la Bastie who was placed in charge of the castle in December 1514. Albany organised further repairs and amendments in July 1527.

An Italian drawing for a fortification of this period by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger, marked as an opinion for "il Duca D'Albania," has been associated with Dunbar. An article by the historian Bryony Coombs further explores the activities of the Duke of Albany and his architectural and artistic connections that informed the design of the blockhouse and situates the building in a European context, and highlights the resemblance of the drawing to the Fort de Salses as built for Ferdinand II of Aragon. James V came to the castle frequently in the summer of 1537 after the death of his first wife, Madeleine of Valois, and oversaw the arrangement of his artillery.
