A huge early nineteenth-century country house built in the style of a Norman castle on the site of much earlier high-status dwellings, set within a wide park on a natural promontory between the Ogwen and Cegin rivers at the eastern end of the Menai Straits. Penrhyn castle dominates the surrounding landscape to an extraordinary degree. The Grand Lodge which forms the entrance to the park, and the high stone walls which surround it, contribute strongly to the sense of a wealthy, aristocratic enclave, yet its proximity to, and visual relationship with, the Quarry (NPRN 40564), the railway systems and Port Penrhyn (NPRN 306314) indicate the source of much of the vast wealth of the owning Pennant and Douglas Pennant families. Now part-owned and entirely managed by the National Trust, the Castle and Park are open to the public. This Neo-Norman residence was built for George Hay Dawkins Pennant (1764-1840), inheritor of the Penrhyn estate, in which work of the period 1827-37 overlays a Medieval hall, itself ‘gothicised’ in the late eighteenth century by Richard Pennant, Lord Penrhyn, the previous owner. The Castle is preserved in its late nineteenth century condition. A remarkable feature of its lavish interior is the use of slate in some furniture – a state bed, a desk, as cisterns and meat cupboard in the kitchen, as inkwell-holders and a billiard table. It is set within extensive grounds which were emparked in the early nineteenth century, and which are surrounded by a high mortared stone wall capped with slate. The grounds include extensive gardens, stabling and a home farm. The setting and relationship of the house to the park and landscape is outstanding. Within the castle stable block is an industrial railway museum which displays locomotives, rolling stock and artefacts from the Penrhyn Quarry Railway and the Dinorwic Quarry Railway.
The present building was created by the architect Thomas Hopper between the years 1822 and 1837 for George Hay-Dawkins Pennant who had inherited the Penrhyn estate from his cousin, Richard Pennant. Pennant himself had married into the Penrhyn family and had subsequently made his fortune through slate quarrying industries in north Wales and slavery in Jamaica.

Bathed in warm golden light, the domes and minaret of this historic Ottoman mosque rise with quiet strength into the deepening blue sky of Istanbul. Captured from a low angle, the image highlights the harmony between form, shadow, and sunlight — a tribute to the enduring elegance of Islamic architecture. The golden crescents glint above layers of stone, evoking a sense of timeless serenity in the heart of a busy city.

The mine at Carn Galver operated on and off from the 1830s to 1878, transforming this quiet coastal moor into a bustling industrial zone. Visitors in the 1870s would have seen smoke billowing from the stack of the steam pumping house (the taller ruined building) which drained water from the mines’s deepest shafts, whilst the clanking winch of the adjacent engine house raised ore to the surface in huge buckets. Carts would then haul off the ore to the nearby Bosigran Stamps (which replaced the early 19th century stamps at Porthmoina Cove) for crushing, separating and roasting. The Count House where the mine manager lived, kept the accounts and entertained shareholders to lavish dinners, is now the Climbers Club.
Powis Castle is a medieval castle, fortress and grand country house near Welshpool, in Powys, Wales. The seat of the Herbert family, earls of Powis, the castle is known for its formal gardens and for its interiors, the former having been described as "the most important", and the latter "the most magnificent", in the country. The castle and gardens are under the care of the National Trust. Powis Castle is a Grade I listed building, while its gardens have their own Grade I listing on the Cadw/ICOMOS Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in Wales.
The present castle was built in the 13th century. Unusually for a castle on the Marches, it was constructed by a Welsh prince, Gruffydd ap Gwenwynwyn, rather than by a Norman baron. Gruffydd was prince of the ancient Kingdom of Powys and maintained an alliance with the English king Edward I during the struggles of the later 13th century. He was able to secure the position of his son, Owain, although the kingdom itself was abolished by the Parliament of Shrewsbury in 1283. After his father's death, Owain was raised to the peerage as Owen de la Pole, 1st Lord of Powis. Following his own death c. 1293, and the death of his only son, he was succeeded by his daughter, Hawys Gadarn, "the Lady of Powis". Hawys married Sir John Charlton in 1309.
In the late 16th century the castle was purchased by Edward Herbert, a younger son of the earl of Pembroke, beginning a connection between the family and the castle that continues today. The Herberts remained Roman Catholic until the 18th century and, although rising in the peerage to earls, marquesses and Jacobite dukes of Powis, suffered periods of imprisonment and exile. Despite these setbacks, they were able in the late 17th and early 18th centuries to transform Powis from a border fortress into an aristocratic country house, and surround it with one of the very few extant examples of a British Baroque garden.
In 1784 Henrietta Herbert married Edward Clive, eldest son of Clive of India, a match which replenished the much-depleted Herbert family fortune. In the early 20th century, George Herbert, 4th Earl of Powis redeveloped the castle with the assistance of the architect George Frederick Bodley. Herbert’s wife, Violet, undertook work of equal importance in the garden, seeking to turn it into "one of the most beautiful, if not the most beautiful, in England and Wales". On the 4th earl's death in 1952, his wife and his sons having predeceased him, the castle passed into the care of the National Trust.

Hannington is a pretty little village in west Northamptonshire with beautiful stone-built houses that date back to the 1700s or early 1800s. The village lies a couple of miles to the east of Pitsford Water, and a mile of so from Walgrave to the north-west and Holcot to the south-west. Its church, St Peter & St Paul, is just out of shot to the right, and dates from the 13th century. It is Grade I-listed.

Built in the 13th century as a medieval fortress, the castle and garden you see today reflects the changing ambitions and visions of the Herbert family, who occupied the castle from the 1570s.
Furnished with decorative fabrics, world-class paintings, furniture, tapestries, and the unique Clive Collection of South Asian objects, the interior reflects the Elizabethan period through to the Edwardian period.
With views across the Severn Valley, the world-famous garden retains many of its original features including 17th century Italianate terraces lined with vibrant herbaceous borders and 30ft clipped yew trees, an Edwardian formal garden with century-old apple trees and rose beds, and a peaceful woodland area.
The castle came into the care of the National Trust in 1952.

The island lies approximately one kilometre (one-half nautical mile) off France's north-western coast, at the mouth of the Couesnon River near Avranches and is 7 hectares (17 acres) in area. The mainland part of the commune is 393 hectares (971 acres) in area so that the total surface of the commune is 400 hectares (990 acres). As of 2019, the island had a population of 29.
The commune's position—on an island just a few hundred metres (yards) from land—made it accessible at low tide to the many pilgrims to its abbey, and defensible as the incoming tide stranded, drove off, or drowned would-be assailants. The island remained unconquered during the Hundred Years' War. A small garrison fended off a full attack by the English in 1433. Louis XI recognised the benefits of its natural defence and turned it into a prison. The abbey was used regularly as a prison during the Ancien Régime.
Mont-Saint-Michel and its surrounding bay were inscribed on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1979 for its unique aesthetic and importance as a Catholic site. It is visited by more than three million people each year, and is the most-visited tourist attraction outside of Paris. Over 60 buildings within the commune are protected in France as historical monuments.
In 2023, President Macron marked 1,000 years of the abbey, and the success of the hydraulic dam project and the elevated pedestrian bridge in restoring water flow in the bay, making the mount an island again.

Bonjour !
Félicitations ! La photo Fanari and its castle blue hour Panorama que vous avez ajoutée au groupe Urlaub auf Flickr a été sélectionnée en tant que photo de couverture.
Fanari is a village in Karditsa, Greece, located on the end of a series of hills extending into the Thessalian plain northwest of Karditsa, and commands a broad view of the surrounding area.[3] The current settlement dates to the later Middle Ages, but is located on the ruins of the ancient city of Ithome, which survived until early Byzantine times. His castle, a plain structure on a circular plateau some 100 m across, is well preserved to this day. It features five square towers, and a strong gate-tower on its western side, while a cistern and remains of a barracks survive in the interior. Source:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fanari,_Karditsa

Edlingham Castle dates mainly from the 14th century, although a manor house of the 13th century is probably concealed beneath the later building. The earliest standing remains are those of the hall house, built about in 1300 by Sir William Felton at a time when Northumberland was relatively peaceful.
Felton was a member of an important family with estates in Norfolk and Shropshire but he had made his fortune independently through military service, royal favour and marriage to a Northumberland heiress, Constance de Pontrop.
His successors made extensive improvements to the manor house. In about 1340–50 his son, also named William, improved domestic comfort by building a magnificent solar tower, the best preserved part of the castle. As the Anglo-Scottish wars continued, he also strengthened the defences with a gate tower and stone curtain wall. Towards the end of the 14th century William’s grandson, John, completed the enclosure walls and enlarged the gatehouse.
Later owners of the estate included the Hastings and Swinburne families. The Feltons had traditionally been royal officials and soldiers but their successors were primarily local gentry, with less need for military display or effective defence.
The castle was abandoned as a dwelling in the mid-17th century and by the 1660s was being quarried for building stone. At the end of the 19th century only the tower was still visible amid grassy mounds. Since 1975 the remains have been in the guardianship and ownership of the state. They were excavated between 1978 and 1982.
It is a watering hole for animals that I found in a hotel hidden inside the massif of Montseny, natural park.
Since this area can not build anything new, it is a thirteenth century farmhouse that has been restored inside and retains its original exterior but some element that formerly were to be used, have now become as decorative.
The trough, centuries old, is carved into a rock of a single piece without joints or additions of any kind so it can remain intact for many centuries more.
White spots produced by lime and red by the iron that contains the water give it an exceptional coloring.
In pictures to come, I will tell the story of how I found this hotel that, although I have it relatively close, I found it by chance because it is impossible to see it from afar.

Here and there in some parts of England, one can come upon an old inn such as this one. Thisone has been painted by the DD Generator.
This is the site of the medieval settlement of Appleton, which was mentioned in the Domesday Book, and gradually deserted over the medieval period. St Mary's Church is in ruins, although the round tower is still standing. The church dates back to the Late Saxon period, and contains reused Roman building material. There is a holy well in the churchyard. A chantry chapel of St Katherine was founded here in the 14th century, although no standing remains of it are visible. A 17th century estate map shows a large manor house, surrounded by a double moat, as well as a substantial farmstead to the southeast. The moat and the farm survive as earthworks.
The ruined round tower remains standing and is a Grade II* listed building.

Castle of Ali Pasha
The castle of Ali Pasha is located on a hill between the villages Anthousa and Agia, 5 km north of Parga. This is a massive and imposing building, built in 1814 under the supervision of the Italian engineer Monteleone, aiming to be the base of Ali Pasha during the siege of Parga. The castle has been preserved in very good condition, conjuring images of that time to its guests. During the tour you will see the underground tanks, the pyritapothiki and rooms of Ali Pasha, with fireplace and cabinets. On the north side of the two and ramparts to protect the entrance. also preserved parts of the devil, with remains of Russian and English guns. The location offers a breathtaking view to the Ionian islands and a good idea is to visit the train that starts from the beach of Parga, enabling an enjoyable journey. At night the illuminated castle, offering a spectacular sight.

Coed y Moch Lodge (aka Garthbledden Lodge or Clock Lodge) was built by “Yr Hen Syr Robert” between 1794 and 1818 (as a lodge is shown on an 1818 estate map, but not on one dated 1794). The lodge was the main (southern) entrance to the original driveway which ran just under a mile to Nannau. Nannau estate, Eryri, Gwynedd, Wales.
Coed y Moch is Welsh for “Wood of the Pigs”, as it was probably where the estate pigs would be let out to forage in the natural oak woodland. The lodge and wall are Grade II listed.
The original hands of the clock were set to six minutes to five, indicating that a traveller was always in time for a meal. The clock is no longer there, being replaced with a painted one set to the same time.

The ruined keep of Hopton Castle, just outside the small village of Hopton Castle (South Shropshire, in the Welsh Borders region of western England), on a mostly sunny morning at the beginning of June 2015.
The castle originated as an Anglo-Norman site, located by an earlier settlement -- there had been a late Anglo-Saxon manor there. The keep, all that remains, has Anglo-Norman features of the 11th or 12th century, but it may have been built during the 1260s (1264 being the date of the earliest surviving written record of it) in a deliberately "archaic" style. During the "English" Civil War (which actually involved Wales, Scotland, and Ireland as well as England), it was held by Parliamentarians until it was taken by Royalists during a fierce siege in 1644. The part of the structure that survived the siege subsequently fell into disrepair and ruin. A restoration project begun in 2006 shored up walls, conserved plaster, added railings for safety, and provided explanatory panels; the restored site opened to the public in December 2011.
Hopton Castle is located in a quiet valley off a side road not far from the border between southwestern Shropshire and northwestern Herefordshire.
(Information about the castle from the Hopton Castle Preservation Trust website and Wikipedia, both last consulted 30 July 2019.)

Shell, Big Horn County, Wyoming
The Shell Lodge was built in 1896 by two English pioneers on their way to claim their fortune in the California gold rush after serving for the English Army in India. They contracted Swiss masons to build this first, and nearly only, local building made out of locally mined river sandstone. The original owners sold the store in 1926, because people had begun to buy automobiles and were able to travel and shop in nearby Greybull. The Shell Store was kept open as mercantile store until 2005.
The lodge was purchased in 2006 by a Belgian family, who were managing the nearby Hideout Lodge & Guest Ranch. They renovated the Lodge and the large yard (now a private park) on its east side.
This year (2020) a new owners, Kevin & Emily, finished another renovation and opened The Shell Store. The photo above shows the new look. They have good food. Stop by and say hi to them.
