I'm not lost, just wandering. Where I end up is not as important as what I see along the way.

One of the best places to see snowdrops in the UK is your local churchyard. Nearly all churches - especially the traditional 'village church' - have a variety of flowers growing. Snowdrops and Crocus through to daffodils and bluebells. Your local church could be an ideal location for your camera.

Looking along the waterfront in the harbour town of Stromness (on the island of Mainland, Orkney, above the north coast of Scotland), on a mostly cloudy late afternoon in mid-June 2022. The main street through Stromness jogs and winds its way just behind and along the harbour, generally from north to south; this view was taken from Southend looking northward.

The innermost part of Stromness Harbour retains its Old Norse name of Hamnavoe, which can be translated as “safe haven” or “peaceful harbour.” Stromness was historically a fishing port and a base for whaling ships of the Hudson’s Bay Company. The cannon in the foreground, according to its accompanying historical plaque, was “reputed to have been salvaged from the American privateer ‘Liberty’ in 1813,” during the Napoleonic Wars (from the US perspective, the War of 1812), then was later “used to fire a salute to the Hudson’s Bay Company ships.” In addition to artists drawn to the town and surrounding area, today it has become increasingly popular with tourists.

The flagstone construction seen on the wall towards the left, as well as part of the house and walls in the middle ground, is characteristic of Orkney as well as of Caithness, across the Pentland Firth in northeastern Scotland. In the background, the hill Brinkie’s Brae.

Within the Orkney archipelago, Mainland is the largest and by far the most populous island (hence its name). It is known for its abundance of prehistoric sites, and, like the rest of Orkney, it has a strong Norse heritage that is still celebrated today. Part of western Mainland, including Stromness, is within the Hoy and West Mainland National Scenic Area (NSA).

We spent an enjoyable day at Beamish, the living history museum in Durham, the North East of England.

This was our 2nd visit and we still haven't seen it all!

If you're interested in social history, I'd highly recommend you visit here; it's quite pricey but definitely worth it!

The Church of Saint John the Baptist is late Norman or Transitional, and is some 900 years old. It has two effigies of knights: one is late 14th century, carved in wood; and the other is dated to 1240, carved in stone, featuring a very large shield. These two are considered to have been lords of the local manor.

The church is of late Norman period, and although it has been much enlarged and altered, much of the original work remains. In the nave there is an arcade of Norman columns, there are two Norman windows and the tower is also Norman.

In the churchyard at Old Sodbury is a number of old bale-tombs; these were tombs for rich merchants. Some of the gravestones date back to the early 19th century. Just outside the churchyard on the hillside is a topograph (a large stone with an engraving), installed to commemorate the second millennium, that shows Old Sodbury in relation to its geographical surroundings

Historical and architectural Towers against blue sky.

This stone structure is all that is left of what was once the largest dual stack charcoal iron furnace in the world.

The structure of massive blocks of sandstone stands 81 feet (24.6m) long, 40 feet (12m) wide, and 60 feet (18.3) high and consists of two furnaces in a single structure. It was designed by Fred Fitch and built by Sam Worthley, a stonemason from Scotland, and operated by Red River Iron Works. Additional buildings were once connected to the front and rear of the stone core visible here but have long ago disappeared.

The production of pig iron was one of Kentucky's earliest industries. A major producer of iron since 1791, Kentucky was, by the 1830s, the third largest iron producer in the U.S. Estill County, Kentucky, was one of the first areas in the country to experience early industrialization, with iron mining and smelting beginning in 1810. In 1868, ambitious entrepreneurs began construction of the Fitchburg Furnace here in Appalachia. It turned out to be the last charcoal iron smelting furnace built in the U.S.

The Fitchburg Furnace, listed in the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, is managed by the U.S. Forest Service as part of the Daniel Boone National Forest near Ravenna, in Estill County, Kentucky.

Robin Hood's Bay.

Robin Hood's Bay is a village in North Yorkshire, England. It is 6 miles (10 km) south of Whitby and 15 miles (24 km) north of Scarborough on the Yorkshire Coast.

It is an ancient chapelry of Fylingdales in the wapentake of Whitby Strand. It is on the Cleveland Way national trail and also the end point of Wainwright's Coast to Coast route.

The origin of the name is uncertain, and it is doubtful that Robin Hood was ever in the vicinity of the village (if indeed he ever existed). The place is attested in the early sixteenth century as "Robyn Hoodis Baye" in 1544. The English ballad The Noble Fisherman tells a story of Robin Hood visiting Scarborough, taking a job as a fisherman, defeating French pirates with his archery skills, and using half the looted treasure to build a home for the poor. However, the ballad is only attested to in the 17th century at the earliest. It is considered more likely to be a work original to the 17th century rather than an older medieval popular legend passed down, and very unlikely to be based on any historical incident. However, it is possible the author knew of Robin Hood's Bay, and sought to tie the story he wrote to the Scarborough area to explain and justify the name.

View from the wilderness area of Powis Castle Garden (Montgomeryshire, Powys, Mid Wales), through the woodland trees, across the lawn and up to terraced garden and the castle itself, on a mostly clear afternoon in early May.

Powis Castle Garden is a National Trust property near the town of Welshpool (Montgomery, Powys, Mid Wales), on the edge of the Severn Valley and not far from the English border. It is noted for its varied terraces on the steep slope down from the castle to the lawn, orchard, and rose garden, which were begun in the late 17th century, in a Baroque style, by country house and landscape architect William Winde -- with plantings updated during the Edwardian period (in the early 20th century, by Violet Herbert, Countess of Powis) as well as more recently.

The castle itself dates back to the medieval period (although the exact dates of the oldest elements are uncertain, perhaps early 13th century), with later additions and restorations. At various stages in its long history, it was home to the princes of the medieval Welsh principality of Powys, the Herbert family, and the Clive family.

Since 1952, Powis Castle and its land have been in the care of the National Trust.

on my blog ΛΟΓΕΙΚΩΝ Logicon

The Tsoukas Monastery is the largest pilgrimage of the prefecture of Ioannina and its feast on September 8 gathers a considerable number of pilgrims. He met great prosperity at the time of the Despotate of Epirus and became a religious and national center (in 1821 and in all the national struggles, he was a refuge of the rebellious ragas).

Tradition says that a picture of Panagia was found on the Tsouka rock and the Lozetsans, the inhabitants of Elliniko, built a chapel on the hill of Ag. Marina and placed it inside. The image, however, was transported to Tsouka every night, thus indicating the location of the monastery's erection. It took its name from the top of the hill that is built, as "Tsukaka Antalta" in the Vlach means "high peak".

The monastery has a fortress character. Entrance to the high enclosure is adorned with stone relief. Cells exist on the southwest and northern side (mostly buildings from the 18th-19th century), which have been restored in recent years. A shed with a shelter is located on the southwest side of the katholikon. The Epirus custom "wants", after a tune, the church to be "worn out" with a candle. So the evil is "exhausted" and the health, prosperity and welfare of the family "protected" ... The stone-built bell tower is of 1866 , according to the inscription it carries.

The katholikon was probably built at the end of the 17th century, in the Athonite press (a one-room temple with dances) with a portico west. Inside the inscription on the lintel (today not distinguished) states that the temple was "preserved" at the expense of the founder Alexios Papaioannou and was "golden" in 1779 by Athanasios Ioannou, a priest from Kapesovo. The frescoes have been covered with soot, but the reliefs of the figures are distinguished. The remarkable wood-carved temple of the temple dates back to the 18th century. and carries an elaborate floral decoration.

On the southern side of the monastery, near the eastern entrance, there is the chapel of the Virgin Mary, which suffered major fire damage.

According to poet K. Crystalli the monastery was famous for its healing water.

At the back of the monastery, the visitor and pilgrim of the monastery can admire the Arachthos River ravine, which has been described as a landscape of a special natural beauty. The view from there is simply magnificent.

on my Blog ΛΟΓΕΙΚΩΝ Logicon

Where the foot of Mount Nemertsika meets the Aoos River, near the junction with Sarantaporo, is the monastery of the Assumption of the Mistress of Molyvdoskepasti. The name of the monastery comes from the lead plates, which, instead of tiles or stone slabs, covered its katholikon earlier and were recently repositioned and so the monastery fairly continues to be titled "Molyvdoskepasti".

The monastery, according to tradition, was founded by emperor Konstantinos Pogonato as he returned from his campaign in Sicily (671-672 AD) and later was renovated by the emperor Andronikos Palaiologos (1328-341 AD). In the later years it was restored by the inhabitants of Pogoniani, who painted their katholikon in 1522.

The monastery was the seat of the Archdiocese of Pogoniani from the 12th to the 17th century. Since the 14th century, a manuscript faculty has been in which priests taught handwriting to monks and lay people. Many scholars and writers of this age graduated from this school. In July 1943 the monastery was bombed by the Nazis, the cells and the dining room were burned and the katholikon was looted.

The current monastery of Molyvdoskepasti maintains its fortuitous appearance, it has renovated cells, two bell towers and a nice garden. Its katholikon is of Byzantine style, with a high dome and well-preserved hagiographies of the 13th-18th century, while on the west side of the narthex there are frescoes depicting Konstantinos Pogonato and Andronikos Palaiologos.

The wood-carved icon screen of the church rests on remnants of an older marble temple. The monastery, today, is an active male monastery and celebrates each year on the 15th of August. Early vigil comes from the evening on August 14th and is operational at dawn.

In the courtyard of the Monastery, behind the Sanctuary there is the tomb of the late Metropolitan of Dryinoupolis, Pogoniani and Konitsa Sevastianos, a form of the Northern epirus' combat.

Historically in the West Riding of Yorkshire, the pretty little village of Slaidburn lies near the head of the River Hodder and Stocks Reservoir, both within the Forest of Bowland, which is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Farming is still a major employer, but the area also attracts tourists.

Probably dating from the early 1600s, and largely unchanged on the exterior, this Grade II-listed Inn used to be named "The Dog". It acquired the name "Hark to Bounty" in 1875. The Squire of Slaidburn was drinking in the Inn when he heard his dog Bounty barking outside and the squire is said to have uttered the words "Hark to Bounty". An unusual external stone staircase leads upstairs to the old Court Room which was in use until the 1930s. Many fine relics are preserved there. Sadly, the last time we visited Slaidburn we found that the pub had closed.

Κήποι Ζαγορίου Kipi at Zagori mountain

on my blog ΛΟΓΕΙΚΩΝ Logicon

This one I took on a short visit to Port Quin, a small almost derelict fishing hamlet at the Cornish coast. I previously uploaded a photo with views towards the sea so this one I took turning around 180 degrees. My eldest was busy throwing stones into the stream and during the longish shutter time transformed into a blur which can just be seen in the background (I tried to remove the most obvious).

As you will also see there are massive distortions making the building look incredibly leaning. I tried to correct with Photoshop but because the distortions are so massive the entire image would have been cropped far too much so I left it as it is because I did not want to loose the rocks in the foreground.

What is your experience with straigthening buildings etc in post-processing - is that something you regularly do and which approach works best in your case? Interested in opinions here...

Warkworth Castle is a ruined medieval castle in Warkworth in the English county of Northumberland. The village and castle occupy a loop of the River Coquet, less than a mile from England's north-east coast. When the castle was founded is uncertain: traditionally its construction has been ascribed to Prince Henry of Scotland, Earl of Northumbria, in the mid-12th century, but it may have been built by King Henry II of England when he took control of England's northern counties. Warkworth Castle was first documented in a charter of 1157–1164 when Henry II granted it to Roger fitz Richard. The timber castle was considered "feeble", and was left undefended when the Scots invaded in 1173.

Roger's son Robert inherited and improved the castle. Robert was a favourite of King John, and hosted him at Warkworth Castle in 1213. The castle remained in the family line, with periods of guardianship when heirs were too young to control their estates. King Edward I stayed overnight in 1292 and John de Clavering, descendant of Roger fitz Richard, made the Crown his inheritor. With the outbreak of the Anglo-Scottish Wars, Edward II invested in castles, including Warkworth, where he funded the strengthening of the garrison in 1319. Twice in 1327 the Scots besieged the castle without success.

John de Clavering died in 1332 and his widow in 1345, at which point The 2nd Baron Percy of Alnwick took control of Warkworth Castle, having been promised Clavering's property by Edward III. Henry Percy, 1st Earl of Northumberland, added the imposing keep overlooking the village of Warkworth in the late 14th century. The fourth earl remodelled the buildings in the bailey and began the construction of a collegiate church within the castle, but work on the latter was abandoned after his death. Although The 10th Earl of Northumberland supported Parliament during the English Civil War, the castle was damaged during the conflict. The last Percy earl died in 1670. In the mid-18th century the castle found its way into the hands of Hugh Smithson, who married the indirect Percy heiress. He adopted the surname "Percy" and founded the dynasty of the Dukes of Northumberland, through whom possession of the castle descended.

In the late 19th century, the dukes refurbished Warkworth Castle and Anthony Salvin was commissioned to restore the keep. The 8th Duke of Northumberland gave custody of the castle to the Office of Works in 1922. Since 1984 English Heritage has cared for the site, which is a Grade I listed building and a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

Another shot from a recent trip to Whitburn Windmill. This time showing the close proximity to the residential properties behind. I thought the previous shot I took detached the beautiful setting from it's actual surroundings, which is also pretty but not quite the flower spread meadow.

The historic Grade II-listed Boathouse at Port Eliot Estate in Cornwall stands on the wooded banks of the tidal River Tiddy.

This rustic stone structure, built of local slate rubble with a dark, steeply pitched roof, dates to the early 19th century and reflects the estate's Georgian Picturesque landscape design. It occupies the approximate site proposed by Humphry Repton in 1793. Architectural features include arched river-facing openings, granite dressings, and a working slipway leading to the river.

The autumn setting is highlighted by a striking red-orange tree that contrasts with the boathouse and surrounding green woodland, all under a clear blue sky. The Boathouse endures as a serene, tangible link to Port Eliot's long history of landscape artistry and maritime leisure.
