Dunnock - Prunella Modularis

aka Hedge Sparrow

The dunnock (Prunella modularis) is a small passerine, or perching bird, found throughout temperate Europe and into Asia. Dunnocks have also been successfully introduced into New Zealand. It is by far the most widespread member of the accentor family, which otherwise consists of mountain species. Other common names of the dunnock include the hedge accentor, hedge sparrow, or hedge warbler.

Dunnocks are native to large areas of Eurasia, inhabiting much of Europe including Lebanon, northern Iran, and the Caucasus. They are the only commonly found accentor in lowland areas, all the others inhabit upland areas

Dunnocks were successfully introduced into New Zealand during the 19th century, and are now widely distributed around the country and some offshore islands. Favourite habitats include woodlands, shrubs, gardens, and hedgerows where they typically feed on the ground often seeking out detritivores as food.

The dunnock possesses variable mating systems. Females are often polyandrous, breeding with two or more males at once, which is quite rare among birds. This multiple mating system leads to the development of sperm competition amongst the male suitors. DNA fingerprinting has shown that chicks within a brood often have different fathers, depending on the success of the males at monopolising the female.Males try to ensure their paternity by pecking at the cloaca of the female to stimulate ejection of rival males' sperm. Dunnocks take just one-tenth of a second to copulate and can mate more than 100 times a day. Males provide parental care in proportion to their mating success, so two males and a female can commonly be seen provisioning nestlings at one nest.

Breaking news from Hogwarts: A squadron of a new generation of Ukrainian war swans on training is spotted in stormy waters of river Avon at an undisclosed location next to Victoria Bridge in Bath. These stealth birds are being equipped with a new charm 'Riddikulus lies' developed at Hogwarts using recently discovered spells from the famous Potion book by the late Professor Snape. This powerful self-guided charm can lift dark spells which the warlock “He Who Must Be Named” and his Boggarts are casting on minds of muggles. The charm works on the grey matter of the muggle’s brain affected by dark spells and stimulates independent thinking to reveal how ridiculous warlock’s views and claims are.

For this week's Macro Monday's theme "Blues" I used my favorite and challenging technique of high speed macro of paint stimulated by a subwoofer.

The Stimulator pattern dry flies are typically used for trout fishing. These feature a brilliant orange base thread.

My heart belongs in nature, especially when it involves forests, mountains, and bodies of water. A lot of modern life makes me anxious & overwhelmed, particularly when there’s a lot of stimulation- noise, people, movement, bright lights. The natural world rarely makes me feel this way. A simple, quiet life filled with nature is what gives me peace.

Needed some colour in my gallery.

Aren't macaws just the rock stars of the parrot world? Not only do they have vibrant colors that would make a rainbow jealous, but their personalities are just as vibrant. These feathered Einsteins are known for their problem-solving abilities and can learn complex tasks. If you are thinking of getting one for a pet be warned though, they require mental stimulation to prevent boredom and destructive behavior, it could be the end of your nice furniture ;)

As someone who grew up by the sea (Blackpool) I have to confess that I have a real soft spot for seascape photography. There's something about photographing the ocean, the water, the beach complete with all the sounds and smells of life that triggers all of my senses. It fills me with a sense of belonging.

There is something magical about standing on a beach watching a living, breathing entity existing right in front of you. I often close my eyes and from a safe distance, listen to the waves crashing in front of me. The power of the ocean I rarely take for granted for obvious reasons and yet I love feeling part of it. It can be stimulating and calming at different locations and even at different times depending on how I feel.

Here is an image that I captured back in February during my week long trip to the truly stunning Lofoten in Norway. Haukland Beach, along with its neighbour Uttakleiv Beach, became my favourite beaches in Lofoten and I am sure you can see why. The colour of the water, the huge dramatic skies and the waves crashing onto the beach made for a very special visit indeed.

I cannot wait to return and while my November 2019 workshop is now full, I will be creating another one for the winter of early 2020 shortly. If you would like to put your name down on my waiting list, please contact me.

Have a wonderful evening everyone.

The way to do this is by invention – by surprise. When I say a good picture has surprise value I mean that it stimulates my thinking and intrigues me. The best way to achieve surprise quality is by avoiding clichés. Imitation is the greatest danger of the young photographer :-)

For some reason I just absolutely love the pictures of my flowerbed this time of year especially after the snow added just a touch of winter to the mix. I don't know if it is the textures or the colors or what, I just really love the way they look together!

Have a great Tuesday everyone!

Everybody calls me the quiet one

But you just don't understand

You can't listen you won't hear me

With your head stuck in the sand

I ain't never had time for words that don't rhyme

My head is in a cloud

I ain't quiet - everybody else is too loud

Still waters run deep so be careful I don't drown you

You've got nothing to hear I've got nothing to say

Sticks and stones may break my bones

But names can never down you

It only takes two words to blow you away.

The poverty of an objectivistic account is made only too clear when we consider the mystery of music. From a scientific point of view, it is nothing but vibrations in the air, impinging on the eardrums and stimulating neural currents in the brain.

How does it come about that this banal sequence of temporal activity has the power to speak to our hearts of an eternal beauty? The whole range of subjective experience, from perceiving a patch of pink, to being enthralled by a performance of the Mass in B Minor, and on to the mystic’s encounter with the ineffable reality of the One, all these truly human experiences are at the center of our encounter with reality, and they are not to be dismissed as epiphenomenal froth on the surface of a universe whose true nature is impersonal and lifeless.

The English Lake District is a self-contained mountainous area in North West England of some 2,292 square kilometres. Its narrow, glaciated valleys radiating from the central massif with their steep hillsides and slender lakes exhibit an extraordinary beauty and harmony. This is the result of the Lake District’s continuing distinctive agro-pastoral traditions based on local breeds of sheep including the Herdwick, on common fell-grazing and relatively independent farmers. These traditions have evolved under the influence of the physical constraints of its mountain setting. The stone-walled fields and rugged farm buildings in their spectacular natural backdrop, form an harmonious beauty that has attracted visitors from the 18th century onwards. Picturesque and Romantic interest stimulated globally-significant social and cultural forces to appreciate and protect scenic landscapes. Distinguished villas, gardens and formal landscapes were added to augment its picturesque beauty. The Romantic engagement with the English Lake District generated new ideas about the relationship between humanity and its environment, including the recognition of harmonious landscape beauty and the validity of emotional response by people to their landscapes. A third key development was the idea that landscape has a value, and that everyone has a right to appreciate and enjoy it. These ideas underpin the global movement of protected areas and the development of recreational experience within them. The development in the English Lake District of the idea of the universal value of scenic landscape, both in itself and in its capacity to nurture and uplift imagination, creativity and spirit, along with threats to the area, led directly to the development of a conservation movement and the establishment of the National Trust movement, which spread to many countries, and contributed to the formation of the modern concept of legally-protected landscapes.
