An ant traverses the surface of the stigma of a bright orange lily.

Gaura flowers are most often seen in their hundreds waving in the breeze on their long thin stems. The flowers are small and slender and the headless green and chubby tiny gingerbread figure stigma is not typical. Still, it makes playing with depth of field interesting.

The Christmas cactus, Schlumbergera bridesii, Cactaceae, was discovered in South America is the early 1800’s and became a winter holiday plant for the Western civilizations. It is a tropical epiphyte plant from the Latin American rainforests and the cultivated ones are hybrids between Schlumbergera truncata and S. russelliana, first bred about 150 years ago in England to obtain a wide range of flower colors from white to magenta. It is called Christmas cactus since it blooms around Christmas.

Drakaea is a genus of 10 species in the orchid family commonly known as hammer orchids. All ten species occur only in the south-west of Western Australia. Hammer orchids are characterised by an insectoid labellum that is attached to a narrow, hinged stem, which holds it aloft. The stem can hinge only backwards, where the broadly winged column carries the pollen and stigma. Each species of hammer orchid is pollinated by a specific species of thynnid wasp. There are at least 2000 species of thynnid wasps in Australia, although only around 600 have been named so far. Thynnid wasps are unusual in that the female is flightless and mating occurs when the male carries a female away to a source of food. The labellum of the orchid resembles a female thynnid wasp in shape, colour and scent. Insect pollination involving sexual attraction is common in orchids but the interaction between the male thynnid wasp and the hammer orchid is unique in that it involves the insect trying to fly away with a part of the flower. Watch a video of the action here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=6yLnKfhmUzg The anatomy of hammer orchids is explained here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drakaea#/media/File:Drakaea_labelle...

Yay, more flowers! This time it's an orange lily from the bouquet the gym owner sent to my mother. Wasn't that a kind gesture?

To those who have made suggestions for my upcoming photo book, thank you so much! At a time when I'm not all that inspired, it's probably best I do a compilation (or two or more) and finally have some of these photos in print. Many, many thanks again for your suggestions and inspiration.
