This is a photograph of cortical pyramidal neurons that have been labeled with a genetically modified rabies virus. The virus is engineered so that infected neurons express a red fluorescent protein that fills all of their processes and reveals their detailed morphology.

"Lysyl Oxidase-like 2 Deaminates Lysine 4 in Histone H3"

A research from the Epigenetic Events in Cancer group at the CRG.

10.1016/j.molcel.2012.03.002

"On the cover: LOXL2 catalyzes an oxidative reaction to remove trimethylated lysine 4 in histone H3 (H3K4me3). In this issue, Herranz et al. (pp. 369–376) report the existence of deamination as an alternative chemical reaction to remove H3K4me3. The cover shows how LOXL2 bee deaminates H3K4me3 in an active promoter (open flowers with transcripts). As a result of LOXL2 action and its partners (worker bees), the promoter becomes repressed (closed flowers) and the gene is no longer transcribed. Image concept by Irma Oliva, Natàlia Davem and S. Peiró. Design and artwork by Irma OIiva." Copyright © 2012 Elsevier Inc.

Yen Kong, BME Research Fellow, discusses the use of stem cell therapy in transforming scar tissue cells into new heart muscle cells in the Lurie Biomedical Engineering Building on January 29, 2014.

Kong, a member of the Cell Signaling in Engineered Tissues (CSET) lab that Putnam heads, developed a research program to see if fibroblasts, a cell type common in scar tissue, could be transformed into heart muscle cells.

By using this method of stem cell research, Kong and Putnam hope to transform scar tissue from heart attacks into new heart muscle.

The photo shows transplanted adult stem cells dyed blue. The arrows point to two cells that have merged into the lining of a blood vessel and have helped in its regrowth. (Published in The Beat v2i4)

The Salk Institute produced an "immunofluorescence image of fruit fly testis." Leanne Jones, an associate professor in Salk's Laboratory of Genetics, uses the model system to study how stem cell behavior is regulated and how the relationship between stem cells and their environment changes during development, aging and tumor development."
