NKP 765 tears apart New Lenox, IL with this excursion train eastbound out of Joliet, IL heading to Chicago. Just an amazing sensory overload of a steam locomotive at 60mph.

I was mooching around Vasser de Sus depot one evening just soaking up the atmosphere and revelling in the fact that I was in a working steam depot with no H&S restrictions and soooo much to photograph when this 1954 Resita steam engine parked itself outside the log shed to take on some wood, being a wood burning loco.

The light coming through the lattice wood panelling became diffused by the steam and created a magical effect.

It was very cramped but I quickly managed to set myself up for a series of shots of which this was my favourite. I love the starburst behind the funnel.

The headland at Cwm Nash, a great place with nesting fulmars, coughs raven and peregrine. Steam appeared to be rising from the cliff top, due to the cloud formation.

Love all the of the old industrial buildings left over from the Victorian times in North West England. This an old warehouse for a seed company, and later converted into offices. Situated on the shropshire union canal. built in 1834

Surprisingly quick and easy to make. Served here with butter, lemon, salt, pepper.

Every year the Dutch Steam Foundation (SSN) organizes its open days in October. Because the SSN does not have its own railway line, it commutes between a steam depot and Gouda Goverwelle. This year we went to our almost favourite spot along the line at Moordrecht, where we saw the trains passing by. This year, in addition to the SSN's 23 023 and 01 1075, the VSM's 23 076 and 50 307 were also present. My eldest son was at the depot with his Lego trains, where my daughter and I would ride the steam train there on Sundays.

On February 3, 2015 BNSF moved D&NE 28 (former DM&IR 332) from Cloquet to Duluth so restoration on the 2-8-0 could continue at the LSRM. Work to return the steam engine to service continues this winter and the museum hopes to have 28 pulling trains on the NSSR in 2016.

For 'Steam Sunday' here is another three for the price of one offering from the legendary mountain climbing narrow gauge gold rush route.

The White Pass & Yukon Route's "rotary fleet" consisting of vintage snowplow #3 (Cooke - 1899) is marching upgrade trailed by twin steam locomotives #73 (Baldwin 2-8-2 blt. 5-47) and #69 (Baldwin 2-8-0 blt. 4-07) and coach 211 as it heads for White Pass summit and the Canadian border to do battle with the snow drifts in the time honored tradition. This is the task for which she was built 111 years ago. The train is two miles shy of the summit at the international border and once reached will have climbed 2885 ft. from Tidewater at the head of Taiya Inlet in the distance of only about 20 miles!

Here the train is just starting on to the 1969 line change that included about a mile of new right of way and a new 250 ft long deck girder bridge and 675 ft long tunnel (adding a second bore to the route) to replace the decaying structure in the foreground. This was necessitated when the railroad secured a contract to haul heavy ore trains loaded near Whitehorse with lead-zinc ore originating from Cyprus Anvil's Faro mine, at one time the largest open pit lead-zinc in the world. The ore was loaded into buckets and then trucked some 240 miles from the mine to the railhead where they were lifted off the truck chassis onto flat cars for the 110 mile trip by rail. These ore trains operated nearly around the clock for 13 years and were the lifeblood of the WP&Y until the bottom fell out in 1982.

This bridge in the foreground is the famous steel cantilever bridge that opened in 1901 replacing a torturous temporary switchback route that was used for the road's first year to get the line around Deadhorse Gulch, so named for the more than 3000 pack animals that perished here during the Gold Rush of 1897-98. The 840 ft. long and 215 ft. high cantilever arch bridge consists of two side spans of 80 ft. each, and a central span of 240 ft. It was designed by the Atlantic, Gulf & Pacific Co., of New York City and was constructed by the Puget Sound Bridge & Dredging Co.

This shot was taken from the old right of way on the north side of the span near where a covered turntable once stood used to turn locomotives after they reversed direction on the switchback. To see an amazing photo looking up from the bottom of the gulch check out this link: digitalcollections.lib.washington.edu/digital/collection/...

My last day in Scotland on this particular trip. I spent the morning chasing the Jacobite steam train across the glens. Here it is having left Corpach station heading for Mallaig. I found a small jetty sticking out into the water so, having crossed the track, I was stuck there until the train had passed.

Valley Railroad Mikado 40 leads a train north departing Essex with some peak foliage still hanging on to the trees.

For today's Steam Sunday here's another from a recent visit to Connecticut's Valley Railroad which does business as the Essex Steam Train and Riverboat. Saturday May 10th was National Train Day and also the opening day of the railroad's 2025 excursion season. They had three regular train and riverboat round trips scheduled as well as a diesel powered Mother's Day lunch train and an evening dinner train running.

The 2 PM third train of the day from Essex is seen at the Deep River boat dock after running north to Chester and Hadlyme. Valley Railroad 2-8-2 'Mikado' New Haven 3025 is crossing Kirtland St. at MP 7.7 on the old New Haven Valley Line as they run around their train to run tender first back to Essex. Behind the locomotive is the Becky Thatcher, the railroad’s 1961 built three deck 150 passenger riverboat that sails up the Connecticut River on a 1 1/4 hr trip past Gillette Castle up to Haddam and back.

3025 is China Railways SY class built new in 1989 by the Tangshan Locomotive and Rolling Stock Works for Pennsylvania's Knox & Kane Railroad where it spent its life until that railroad's demise following the collapse of that lines signature attraction, the Kinzua Viaduct. It was purchased by the VRR in 2008 and was rebuilt as a functional replica of a New Haven J-1 'Mikado' locomotive like the type that once plied this line in local service and re-numbered 3025, one number above the last of the original class on the NYNH&H.

Abstracting with the steam coming out of a volcano vent as it washes over the leaves of the surrounding plants. I wanted to capture the motion of the leaves as the steam flowed across them. It took several attempts to get the steam and leaf action to be just the right mix.

This unique 6" Steam Wagon is an impressive engine based on a Burrell prototype from 1901. Burrell Steam Wagons never had the best reputation but fortunately this half-size replica is an excellent and strong performer on road and rally field.

The Burrell, registered in 2007 as KX07 NMF, is seen at the Welland Steam Rally on 29th July 2023.
