Newton Solney, at the confluence of the Rivers Trent and Dove, was captured by the Danes along with nearby Repton in AD874. when they sailed up the Trent, and has had a number of ruling families overlooking its interests. At Domesday it was the property of Henry de Ferrers. During the reign of Henry 111 it passed to Norman de Solney and later to the Ratcliff family who had brewing interests at Burton-on-Trent.

Cruck Cottage, thought to be the Old Parsonage. Some of the beams date back for 400 years. The Curates of Holy Trinity Parish lived there and conducted services across the cutting in the Church Rooms, which became Berry Hedge Lane School, before St Mark’s Church was built.
