Bretby War Memorial on the village green at the centre of the village. It is surrounded by the former village school, cottages and St Wystan's parish church rebuilt in 1877. All were built by the Bretby Estate in a picturesque and deliberately ornamental style.

Bretby means "The dwelling place of Britons" and it is believed to have been the site of a major battle between the Danes and kingdom of Mercia in AD880.

Bretby village was first mentioned in Domesday as an agricultural settlement around a green, and this remains the core of the village.

Originally a berewick or outlier of Newton Manor, Bretby became a separate manor in the 13th century when it was granted by Ranulf, Earl of Chester, to Stephen de Segrave who, amongst other attributes, was Justiciar of England between 1232 and 1234 and once acted as joint regent for Henry III during the king's absence.
