...and statistics!

I have never paid much attention to the Play List menu on my iPod but tonight it caught my eye. Amongst other lists I was offered a list of my top 25 most played tunes. I have to admit I was surprised to see how this pans out.

As a huge Bob Dylan fan I would have expected to see a song of his reaching a higher ranking than number 10, and for him to feature more than twice in the list.

After due consideration this evening I have come up with a couple of things which may explain his poor showing in this list.

1: I use my iPod a lot in my car. If I am driving alone I will often listen to loud rocky music. If driving in company the choice may be something lighter but still something upbeat. Most of Dylan's work is not in these categories.

2: I have more Dylan in my collection than any other artist, with 44 albums on my iPod, not including the two Traveling Wilburys albums. With such a wide range of Dylan tracks to select I suppose it is not that surprising that I don't always chose the same one. For example whilst I have 619 Dylan songs to chose from, I have only 41 Nick Cave songs. A much narrower choice when I fancy some Nick Cave...

Oh and the tracks that come in at positions 2-4 all come from the marvellous A Christmas Gift to You, produced by the inimitable Phil Spector. Eleven of its thirteen tracks made my top 25. I love Christmas tunes...!

Left table: M. N. Baker, “Water-Works,” in Edward W. Bemis, editor, Municipal Monopolies (Thomas Y. Crowell, 1899), Table 1, p. 15.

Above, I attached two tables together because I felt that they both say a lot about the status of drinking water in the United States during the mid 18th century. On the left is a table showing the private and public investment in canals (which can be used as transportation for drinking water) throughout the 18th century. The table on the left shows the year in which certain cities built waterworks and the year in which these waterworks came under public ownership.

First, I will discuss the table on the left. In the middle of the 18th century, when London still hadn’t developed an effective system for the distribution of drinking water, the government had the idea to follow the example of Boston and Philadelphia, cities that both had reservoirs of their own to provide them with water (lecture). With Boston and Philadelphia both in the Northeast region of the United States, I looked at how that part of the country fared on the above table. In 1841, it hit 8.8 million dollars (more than the South and West regions in that same year), and although the numbers decrease in the years following that, this may be because the water pipe systems had developed enough so that they were not too dependent on private and public funding. Also, the large increase in general investment from 1837-1841 may be attributed to the modernization of the canals in terms of architecture and infrastructural progress. Regardless, this table can be linked with the idea that a good supply of drinking water is linked to how much money citizens are willing to invest in state funding of waterworks and water-related infrastructure. This is also probably why it was so hard for poor people to get pressurized water (lecture), as they were not able to pay for it. London especially made clean drinking water a priority after the mid-century cholera outbreak (Luckin 33).

The table on the right shows just how long it took for some cities to have their clean drinking water supply be owned and organized by the state instead of by independent, private companies. This way, clean drinking water would become something that was under the government’s power to control and to distribute appropriately. The reason why Boston was so successful in its water system may have been because they transferred waterworks to public possession before mid-century, and therefore had the majority of the 18th century to organize a steady supply of clean water distribution from their reservoir.

The Preston post code "PR1" covers an area from the leafy suberbs of Preston with its expensive houses, several acres of "genteel property, the commercial and industrial centre of the city, the club district, two red light districts, some classy flats and houses, an area of crime, and some of the most deprived areas of social housing.

People who live in virtual crime free zones complain that because the insurers rate all properties by postal code they have to pay premium rates.

Now they have placed ALL of the PR1 crime statistics on one almost crime free street.

Believe it or not, this is exactly what I wanted to read, and yes, unfortunately, it does make sense.

Which isn't really saying a great deal, as this course is aimed at 17 year olds.

All the time while you're playing uPuzzle, it's keeping track of what's going on so you can see how you're doing or just use it for bragging rights with your friends - "so you've done 2 hard puzzles huh? Not bad, but nothing compared with my 4 brutal puzzles!!"
