At the time of publication, in 1937, the London Midland & Scottish Railway was one of the largest transport undertakings in the world as well as being one of the largest employers in the UK - according to their own statistics in 1937 the company employed 230, 323 people. The LMS was one of the Big Four UK railways and had been formed in 1923 when it inherited the assets of 35 individual companies. As well as rail transport the LMSR, like others, had substantial interests in canals, docks & harbours, ferry services, hotels and catering and road transport.
This stocky booklet was issued in 1937 and this copy has been carefully updated, by use of official amendment sheets, to cover 1938 and 1939. Its 300 pages of tables and text cover a wide variety of subjects, pertaining to the LMSR as well as other British railways and allied industries (such as coal and iron/steel production). Alongside a diary of events the LMS's principal statistics, items of interest, financial accounts, and statistical returns are detailed as wll as principal accounts and statistics for the whole of British railways thus allowing comparison.
It shows the importance of the data collated to the management and administration of such an enterprise. Sadly, at the time, the LMS was like other UK railways was not performing spectacularly well and this would, especially after the wartime years, lead to a major restructuring of the sector.
After the crash I was curious about fatality statistics surrounding motorcycle-deer crashes. I had no idea the fatality rate was this high. These statistics are also rising.

As you drive around this country's roads you will see many sights like this one. Floral tributes or white wooden crosses marking the spot where someone's life ended as the result of a car accident.
This fenceline tribute appeared on the highway near my house yesterday. The accident itself happened on Anzac weekend. I dont know the specifics of this particular smash – what happened, who or what caused it. I do know that a 14 year old girl was killed. She was the same age as my son and was in his school year. And while eventually the death toll from that weekend will be absorbed into a database of statistics in some government department – and so disappear – the real loss to a family and friends somewhere will take much, much longer to absorb. I feel for them.
My son just turned 15. He is now eligible to sit for his drivers licence. As a parent this makes me nervous. He is about to be let out onto our network of dangerous roads populated by stupid and dangerous drivers. I will do my best to make sure he doesnt become one of them. And also to make sure that he doesnt become one of those statistics.

Bungee jumping isn't a normal topic in school, but it was a major focus in Mr. Smith's Probability and Statistics class from Nov. 11-12, 2024. His students used scatter plots and regression models to approximate the appropriate length of a bungee cord made out of rubber bands. The goal was to help dolls attached to the bungee cords reach a target height during a jump from the track level of the Fieldhouse.
Some groups miscalculated and hit the gym floor, while others nailed the perfect distance. Regardless of the outcome, it was a fun and informative activity!

I hadn't been paying attention that close to the number, but before I left home this morning I clicked on my stats and saw I was just over the 2-million mark.
